Here’s the issue with laws like this: people in 2022 will try to claim anything to justify their reasoning for not being hired or termination. Whether it be their skin, gender, sexual orientation, religion, etc. because being part of the victim class is a fad now. Ask anyone who has a decent tenure in HR how many times this has happened at their job. It’s not just in America where this type of discrimination is a thing. A number of schools in Australia (and this will shock you - they were all private “Christian” school) have gotten into trouble for trying to force “acceptable” hairstyles on kids with afro/kinky hair. In each case brought before the anti-discrimination commission the school lost.

I would have thought that hair styles would already be covered by the anti discrimination acts of race. I mean, just because I'm white doesn't mean that I wouldn't wear corn rows or have dread locks. So in my honest opinion, discrimination against a hair style is absolutely positively ridiculous and I'm totally ashamed that we even have to have this type of law in place to protect anyone who wears a style because of the color of their skin.

Thank goodness this is being addressed! _Colin in Black & White_ *on Netflix* opened my eyes to this terrible, blatantly race-based discrimination. And it has long-lasting consequences when, e.g, well-deserved professional opportunities open up, only to end up being withdrawn… repeatedly. In Kaepernick’s case, he was emotionally traumatized as a young man because of this. Kaepernick had just gotten his hair done in corn rows for the first time. Then he was basically told that, even though he was a better ball player, he didn’t look the way they wanted their players to look. So they said “no” to Kaepernick & “yes” to this other young man who wasn’t as good as K was, but hey, at least he looked the part. 🙄🤢 He immediately took out the corn rows and had his hair cut in the “acceptable” style, and didn’t put his hair in braids of any kind for many years because of this experience. 😢 I don’t think anyone expects that all of this kind of discrimination will stop entirely, just because of this law. I’m sure that when it does happen, it will be more subtle, harder to prove. But I do think making it illegal will make a real difference. And it’s certainly a step in the right direction. 🙂

I am not sure if this law includes work place safety as a consideration but for those that work in food service or around machinery, you have to wear protective garb over your beards and hair. Yes, your personal style should be allowed as long as it can be "contained", for lack of a better word, within the protective garb.

This also begs the question, ‘what is a black haircut?’ Would a very close trimmed haircut be considered black? Would very long hair be considered black? A black haircut to one person might be far different from another person. We have so many problems in the United States, high energy bills, runaway inflation, empty storage shelves. For those wondering what the bill actually says, read H.R. 2116. It "prohibits discrimination based on a person's hair texture or hairstyle if that style or texture is commonly associated with a particular race or national origin. Specifically, the bill prohibits this type of discrimination against those participating in federally assisted programs, housing programs, public accommodations, and employment." It does not say it only applies to "black" hair styles. It does use hair styles of those of African descent as an example, saying "For example, routinely, people of African descent are deprived of educational and employment opportunities because they are adorned with natural or protective hairstyles in which hair is tightly coiled or tightly curled, or worn in locs, cornrows, twists, braids, Bantu knots, or Afros" but this is by way of example only, not IMO intended as a limitation. Sounds like all potential hairstyles are wide open. Just look up this history of the mullet. This could be quite interesting. I can't imagine how many hair styles it could apply to.

Discrimination and hypocrisy are bad - and - this act is stupid. Why is this "black"? This is a missed opportunity. It wouldn't be difficult to make this act universal. Just as there are more religions than "Christianity", there are more races than "black" and "white". As an aside, the diction used in the clip from the official was embarrassing. Really? All of the attention spent focusing on a single group of people (I don't think it's an ethnicity, as, well, it's confusing and often seems contextual) in itself seems to often be a discriminatory act. Irony. Sadness. How about equality for all, no matter any facet of one's identity? That'd be nice.
@cottonhairedaesthetic20052 жыл бұрын
Which other race is being discriminated against in the work place specifically for hair? Because natural hair covers ALL black people and we have many cultures and ethnic backgrounds but we’re also the only people with our specific hair texture. Be happy for black people and women unless you want to tell me who else is getting the short end of the stick and we can take that to congress too. Why is it a competition with you people? You can’t just be happy for progress you just hate us LOL 😂 Instead of saying “why do the blacks get that?” Say, “now that that the blacks have that I want to bring attention to (some kind of injustice).” It’s not a competition it’s an evolution of equality and black people being able to wear their hair to work isn’t stopping your lazy behind from lobbying for what you believe in like we do. The closest I can think of is maybe requiring hair to be a certain length or pinned up in a certain way. And even that was when I was in the military. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if there are such requirements at much higher levels of companies. Is that what this is addressing? If so, I could see justification for the legislation. Though, to be honest, those people are probably making $150k+ a year, so I'm not going to feel too bad for them. Heck, I'll wear a wig that much... lol. Businesses can be awful. Once being a consultant, I saw a lot of discrimination (across industries). Since the discrimination is usually top down and based on an individual's preference (or a small group of people), it can be over the most bizarre things. If the entity in question happens to be a law firm - well - they'll do it and know how to cover their own hind ends. It's pretty terrible. True a decade ago and true today. Often, the people leading the charge also happen to be huge hypocrites. Sad.

Back in 1995, I worked in a popular hospital in San Diego as a telemetry tech in a cardiac unit. I remember this beautiful lab tech sister got beautiful Bantu knots. The 90% white nurses and staff gave her so much grief... even though some of them had radical colored hair(green or purple). One day I was chatting with her in the cafeteria, and she told me her manager gave her a week to get rid of the bantu knots or she would begin the discipline process for breaking the dress code. She was a single mom and relied on the position while she was in college, so she was forced to take her knots out. Currently, I work in another hospital as a respiratory therapist(2022). I saw a white nurse with gorgeous blond dreadlocks working ER! I chatted with her and told her I was extremely impressed at the level of her dreads. She said she loved them but wasn't sure she would keep them because she received so much subtle harassment from simple-minded staff. So yes. It is a problem.

I get though this isn't as applicable most men keep their hair short and thus don't have as many options anyway that wouldn't fit standards. Just saying I'm not sure if your examples apply or not.
