House (Japanese: ハウス, Hepburn: Hausu) is a 1977 Japanese experimental comedy horror film directed and produced by Nobuhiko Obayashi. It is about a schoolgirl traveling with her six friends to her ailing aunt's country home, where they come face to face with supernatural events as the girls are, one by one, devoured by the home. It stars mostly amateur actors, with only Kimiko Ikegami and Yōko Minamida having any notable previous acting experience. The musical score was performed by the rock band Godiego.
It received negative reviews, but was a box office hit in Japan. It received a wide release in 2009 and 2010 in North America where it received more favorable reviews and has since received a cult following.

Ok I just subscribed. You’re watching my fav movies and your comments are so hilarious yet very precise. Btw if you read traditional ghost stories from japan, they are pretty much like this. Like very strange and absurd with no european morals to the story whatsoever. Like stuff just happens cause that’s life and that’s ghosts for you the end and it’s fantastic. Also I think obayashi reminds me of maurice sendak in that sendak used to say that he actually didn’t particularly make things for children, that he just had that kind of sensibility and other people would categorise his work. With animation and this kinds of movies It’s a bit the same like cartoony and colourful doesn’t have to mean for kids. And also kids actually have very intense and bizarre imaginations.

Thanks buddy! I haven't read a lot of Japanese ghost stories, though I have seen Kwaidan and I don't remember it being this absurd, but I suppose a lot of the older costumed Yokai films have some similarity...but this movie I think is just in a class of its own. I'm not sure if any of Obayashi's movies are anything like this, but I'm keeping him on my to-watch list for sure.
