absolutely and also 100% correct. i bowled for the first time in my life this weekend on PBA oil - i'm 60 yrs old. i did not know the lane was PBA pattern but after 3 games of absolutely NO CONTROL over my ball and dismal scores, checking out the lane operator told me they were surprised to see my bowling on that particular lane and then I found out why - it had PBA oil pattern. i have a completely new respect for what the Pros are doing - amazing. give me my house oil!

I'm convinced the house I used to bowl in (ran a huge tournament every year from January to November) just put down the tournament shot all the time. It may not have been as tough as the US Open shot, but it was damned close. You had your board, maybe a margin error of 1, and that was it. Felt proud to have been able to keep my average up there.

My average is a 248 on league at home but when going to big tournaments my average would drop considerably, I'm talking like 180s and 190s!! I will apply what you have shown here on this video to my future tournaments!! Thanks again!!!

That's the thing about house shots, you don't need to be knowledgeable about professional bowling to bowl well, you only need to be consistent. I have several guys at my lanes that have been bowling 20+ years, but if I try to engage them in tournament talk, they don't really have any of the information needed to partake. Muscle memory is easy, adapting is not. That being said, a 250 avg is still improbable, but not impossible.

Great video! Maybe those house bowlers will think a little about their averages now, lol. From experience, I averaged a 225 one year and went to a tournament where they had a "US Open-like pattern", slightly smaller amounts of oil to the left hand side of the lanes to compensate for the small amounts of left-handed bowlers in the tourney. Anyways, I only hit a 200 game once out of six, and it was my fifth game. I only averaged in the mid to high 170s. Kudos to the pros!

Yep, I averaged 205 to low teens on wood lanes, which I'm more proud of than averaging 220-25 on synthetic lanes. But I averaged 172 on the PBA Bear pattern sport league. (USBC adjusts it to 199). Phew!

The US Open oil pattern is VERY difficult. I've averaged as high as 236 in league with multiple 300 games and multiple 800 series. I bowled PBA Regional tournaments one year and averaged about 205 for all the oil patterns. I had a chance to bowl on the US Open oil pattern only once. My house had a US Open oil pattern league one summer. It was a singles format and you bowled 4 games a week for 8 weeks. You moved a pair every game and there were many who quit because the scoring pace was so low. Making spares was never more critical than on this type of pattern. I consider myself fortunate to have averaged 199 for this league.

Everybody who averages 200+ on a house shot that doesnt understand how much bounce area there is should be forced to bowl the open or masters once so they can find out they might average 180 if theyre actually half decent. Most find out theyll average 140-160.

Very informative video, I always wondered how much different the pattern was. I bowled for the first time ever at the US Open last year, and was the hardest shot ever attempted for me for sure. I had the higest score on my team 190, and the lowest 130. It was a fun but humbling experience, but I personally loved the experience regardless of my scores. As a competitor, you always want to see how you can adjust to a hard shot and how you stack up. I had the 2nd highest series on my team, so for the first time, I was content. If you get a chance to go, do it!

Good video, experienced bowlers know these general rules. Sport shots are always 20-30 pins less then house shot averages. Spares are key because strikes are hard. Makes you have to be a complete bowler to compete and win. Bowling on these tough patterns increase your skill and shot making ability

Back in the seventys and eightys when you shot a 300 or 800 the lanes had to be check to make sure there was no dry area on the outside and that part of the lane had to have oil on it. If it did have a dry area like this video the scores were throw out and you didnt get an award. I grew up on this type of shot and it is alot tougher and truly does test ur skill. Back then there were no reactive balls so you really had to have talent to bowl. Great video

I run a scratch league at my house, we bowl on WBT patterns as well as PBA patterns and the best thing i can tell any house bowler is practice spares. A few spares a game is a big difference between shooting 200 and 150. DO NOT BE SCARED! Learn from every shot. Learn what you struggle in whether it be with shot making, spares, etc. Trust me, Bowl on some of these patterns for a few weeks then go back to a house shot and you'll average at lease 10 pins higher.

There's also the matter of Carry, or Carry Down. That bowling ball picks up oil as it goes along. But some of that oil gets deposited on the dry portion of lane. So that when your ball reaches the end of the oil pattern it may not hook nearly as much as you might be expecting.

Basically house shot allows inconsistency, and for straight down the lane bowlers, however can help slightly inconsistent hook bowlers... But us open requires we extreme consistency with gradual adjustment

My 16 year old nephew bowled in a high school summer league this past year. They only bowled sport shots that they changed every two weeks. One two stretch they bowled the US Open pattern. They bowled three games on one pair of lanes then went to match play highest seed against lowest seed switching lanes as they went-12 bowlers in all. The kids that struggled are the ones that had limited equipment (a plastic ball and maybe a mid performance strike ball) and never changed their shot. Kids that had multiple balls (5) for various lane conditions and understood what moves were needed did well, several scores in the 200’s, but I don’t recall anybody averaging above 200. My nephew averaged a 190 on the pattern but there were a few that had higher averages than his. If you are a good bowler, understand the game and how the lanes change, and have the right equipment you can bowl well on this pattern, just maybe not as well as the pros.

this was an excellent description... Could you make a video explaining what people mean when they talk about moving over boards.. Whenever i bowl i make movements based on the dots and arrows. The boards that make up the lane are only about an inch wide and there are so many of them i feel like it would be a ridiculous way to keep track of how much movement you are making.
@mikayladavis7659
@mikayladavis7659 8 жыл бұрын
When he is talking boards, he means the individual boards. The house I bowl at has a tough shot and if I don't hit directly between the 8 and 9 board on fresh lanes, my ball will not carry a strike. After each game (during league play), I usually need to move about a half board for my ball to move like it did before. Think of it this way... each board you miss on your mark will make a 3-5 board difference down the lane depending on the pattern. The more technical you get with bowling, the more precise your movements have to be. Missing by one board on tough lanes is the difference between pocket and chopping through the head pin and leaving an almost impossible split. Hope this helps a bit!
@berndtsteve
@berndtsteve 10 жыл бұрын
I agree with some of the lower comments, I typically bowl slightly better on tougher patterns because in my head I know I can't miss, where a house shot I am almost two relaxed because you can have a target and essentially a five board range with a couple in and out of your target. U.S. open pattern though I think I would be lucky to hit a 500 series through first 3 games with a 215 average going in.

This is not the case,what is that you have to put the work into it understand what you are doing I do alot of home work to be as good as I am people donot like to work or sweat or don't like to listen when you try to tell them to try something different they always try it at first and go back to the same thing they started with! Love this video! Great! I get bored bowling on house shots. No one in our area will put out a sport shot because no one will bowl on it; it is too tough and it will kill the persons average and ego. There are too many so-called 200 average bowlers who depend on easy, walled up conditions and the latest mega ball technology to score. I average 215 to 220 composite at four different houses and 200 on sport conditions. Not sure if that makes me a better bowler; also I am 63 years old.

thx, great informative video! I'm just getting back into bowling after a 25 year break! I used to throw a strong Magnum 9 Plastic/Urethane Ball held 187 avg, now w/ Roto Grip Critical I have a great pin action that I never saw w/previous ball tho I threw much higher speed & Rev rate when I was young! Problem is now from House to House, some places my ball has great hook at only12-14mph, some places even it throws straight as my old Magnum 9 did and it's like a dead ball ! I have already had it resurfaced twice, oil sucked out of it and all other things that sounded like nonsense, I'm very inconsistent now throwing anywhere from 145 to 245 in the same day ! While I can bowl 180's throwing the ball under the legs :-)) any advice would be great !

I have a Roto Grip Dare Devil and I try to hunt for the dry patches in warm ups instead of dialing in one shot. If the ball spends a lot of the time in the heavy oil down the middle it will behave like your dead ball but if I throw between the first and second arrow it hooks hard back to the pocket. I usually find two or three spots that if I get my ball to it will finish well but there are some nights where nothing works. On those days its smart to just pull out the old urethane ball and play a simple low hook stroker shot down the side

is it really necessary to put so much work into these new balls, resurfacing and getting the oil sucked out, I have even heard of a guy thats a fair bowler scuffing his Strike ball lightly where he believes it rolls when it catches!! He says he simply grabs his ball from the ball return marks where the oil pattern lays on his ball, lightly sands that ring around his ball! Has anyone out there head of this or tried this? Thx God Is Good
@onagoodday627
@onagoodday627 7 жыл бұрын
If you're averaging over 200 and bowling a few hundred games a year then yes you may want to resurface. The problem with these new balls is if you don't clean them often the oil is absorbed into the pores and they become somewhat useless after a few seasons. There are spray foam cleaners sold for these balls that will remove most of the oil after you are done for the night. Also using a shammy to clean off the oil will help as well. Doing these two things should keep you out of the pro shop for quite a while. As for the sanding, first never do it during play because its against the rules. Second, sanding can really screw up these new balls on how they read the lane. They come polished for a reason and that is to skid through the oil then hook hard on the dry. Typically they come ready for normal house conditions but if you bowl in a sport shot league then may need to fool around with sanding and polishing.

the game has changed but everyone compete on the same condition and with coverstock that sucks the oil so aggressively, the new bowler needs new set of adjustments as well. Its weird how when we assume other bowlers have no idea about the conditions back then and unable to play in reversed and broken down conditions? When someone bowled a great result, the 1st reaction is pretty much sour grapes lamenting how easy it is now.

Jere Turunen Possibly a topography issue or worn out synthetic panels. Once the texture is glazed smooth (by not oiling outside 10 board to protect the lanes/inflate the scores), it will get very "squiggly" off the break point after a game or so.

But one of the reasons I feel pros are able to score better on sport shots than top amateurs is that they are exposed to them on a regular basis. If you don't play those lane patterns enough, then you will have a less of an idea as to how to play them in my opinion. One of the reasons why league bowlers are able to score well on house patterns is that although they are easier than sport patterns, the amount of exposure they have to that type of pattern is like over several decades worth.

One everlasting constant in CompetitiveBowling is that the best score wins. How high the best scores/averages go is nowhere near as important as how high the expence of participation goes. BUT a curious constant that goes with a decline in PARTICIPANTS in CompetitiveBowling has been the rising expense of bowling balls along with related problems in lane maintenance. It seems like the THEME behind all this "SHOT" stuff is more about selling bowling BALLS rather then BOWLING itself. [ Big Mistake]

You make some good points and putting out a sport shot is a great idea. Only bowlers who know what they are doing will be able to adjust to it. I remember years ago when you were on a tough condition where you had to make good shots you felt good if you bowl well. Now if you bowl high scores and you know that it really wasnt you but mostly the lane condition if feels awful, because you know it wasnt you. But today bowlers do think it their talent when in reality they are not very good at all.

I did too. Unfortunately these newfangled balls eat up all the oil; as a result, these scores would be tossed out if lane inspectors re-entered the picture and performed the same tests they conducted decades ago after an honor score is shot.

Yeah. I work at a centre. I always hear people say they could blow away PBA bowlers. I tell them to shut up and put up. I also work at a centre which is hard up about keeping wood lanes, so another dynamic element is added there. People simply don't understand oil patterns, and I would love to see house bowlers (which only bowl in 2 or 3 centres) thrown out into the mix with the adults. I am no pro, but I understand and accept I couldn't do shit on a PBA shot

I rather enjoy Irishpogi's videos. He has a great love of the game and doesn't claim to be a great bowler.

Proprietors are too overly concerned with "happy customers" and in order to make them happy, they "give them the pocket" by providing an artificial scoring environment. I have one big question for the BPAA and here it is! What's wrong with providing a learning environment to your customers?

Me being a left handed bowler, it would seem i would have a bigger advantage. It would only be a matter of mastering the oil pattern.

On typical house lanes I avg around 175. If I bowled 10 games on US Open lanes I would be shooting in the 90's, and maybe breaking 100 once or twice.

+nv vam leave makeable spares and you will be in the 150s. i you shoot or learn to shoot straight at spares, no oil pattern should affect your ball's motion rolling straight. What are you splitting in 9 frames per game lol

One big problem with the PBA tour these days is that the house shots are sooooo easy. No need to go watch the pros bowl well when Joe Schmoe is bowling 300 on a house shot every Thursday nite. A lot of the mystique is gone. In golf, everyone knows how special Mickelson and Woods are when the average golfer can't break 100 on the local course. Not true anymore in bowling.
