At 2:02:10 when Aemon is talking about leaving the wall and that he should have seen it, I don't think he was talking about Jon being a Targaryen, I think he was talking about the wall's magical properties that were extending his life....ice preserves "Lord Snow could not have known, but I should have seen it." Jon sending him away from the wall is what led to his health degrading so quickly. Like when Bilbo gave up the ring and age caught up with him

Maester Aemon's last ramblings: "I should not have left the Wall. Lord Snow could not have known, but I should have seen it. Fire consumes, but cold preserves. The Wall ... but it is too late to go running back. The Stranger waits outside my door and will not be denied." I believe this actually means that the reason Maester Aemon lived so long is because he was living for so long at the wall. But Jon Snow sent him South because Jon didn't know that it was the wall that was keeping Maester Aemon alive.

I see other people saying it too - the video isn't loading properly for some of us. For me, in the preview it says it's over 3 hours long, but when I come to the actual video and watch, it's 1:59.59 long. It starts in the middle, right when Robert is talking about how we "see it again and again and again" with women dying in childbirth. Several other IDG videos have done this recently as well, with the first portion of the video cut off. No way to rewind it to the beginning. Hope KZbin can fix it - maybe it some kind of uploading issue?

@@doktorcool3740 And now it works fine. Must be some kind of upload strangeness with long videos. I've gotten the same thing on several other channels, with the only commonality being long run-times. Oh wells. Would be nice to get the video from the beginning, but I'm ok with waiting a couple days to watch something if I get to watch it in full. For Robert: I really like your content and I rewatch much of it. A lot of your viewers probably don't watch more than once. Probably a good idea to figure out why your longer videos won't start at the beginning for a significant portion of your audience. Keep up the good work, and thank you for your readings of classic novels on your other channel. Really great. I don't know if you have an editor, or any other staff, or whatever - but since you're focusing on novels that are old enough to have expired copyrights: Have you considered using some of the classical music from the era, much of which is also not copywritten anymore, as some background to add to your narration? Even if it's just in chapter transitions, etc....it would add a lot. Your voice alone is already great for production value....but some musical flourish would upstage 90% of modern books on tape. Also: Narnia. Seriously. Narnia. I re-read all of them every year, they are the most emotionally impactful books I've ever read. They might be short, they might be simple on first reading, but I firmly believe that most truly great things don't take too many words. The real-world application and understanding of the last book, alone, could change the world, if more young adults were exposed to it.

I like the court fool Mushroom in the Dance of the Dragons, I would say that about half of the accounts he wrote ring true, but there was one account that Mushroom left out: that he killed King Aegon II. King Aegon is found to have been poisoned after the crippled king re-takes King's landing. He was holding his nephew, the future Aegon III hostage, as the Stark army marched on Kings Landing. Some urged Aegon II to kill young Aegon, but he was given a cup of poisoned wine and died before that could happen, and so ended the war. Why do I think Mushroom did it? He remained court fool under Aegon III, so the boy must have been well disposed to him, and Mushroom had also served his mother. Although many people were blamed for poisoning the king, the true culprit was never caught, but it must have been someone close to the king, who closer (but not suspected that a Fool?) Fools are always overlooked, ignored, yet there he was at the heart of it all. Lastly, Mushroom tells us, when watching the mob storm the dragon pit, the Queen is dismissive calling the common folk rats and fools, but Mushroom reminds her that rats can kill a bear, and 'A Fool can kill a King'. Now he's taking about the dragons here, and he's right, but isn't that a nice clue for later events to hint that he poisoned Aegon II?

This stream was excellent , the Targs are a fascinating House / family with so much to draw from and speculate on ; especially given the rich history GRRM has provided the Targs for the reader(s) through the main series and companion books / novellas. GRRM has clearly focused on and written the most about the Targs , more than any other group / concept in this universe. This 3 plus hour stream absolutely flew by discussing such an interesting and fascinating House who have been so vitally pertinent and integral to the narrative past , present and future. We definitely hit on many interesting topics and concepts related to the Targs during this stream. Per the Doom I do agree with Robert , despite hearing some theories that the Targs were part of , if not solely responsible for the Doom , I also have my doubts along with Robert on that one. The Targs clearly benefitted from the Doom being the sole remaining House / family in the world with dragons once the dust settled after the Doom , so that is a clear global massive power advantage to wind up in that situation but I do not think that was the Targs' doing. I personally believe the Iron Bank , Braavosi top brass at the time and the maesters came together with and paid the Faceless Men to assassinate the Fire Mages controlling the Fourteen Flames which initiated the Doom. Given the motive aspect the Iron Bank , Braavosi hierarchy , the Citadel / maesters and the Faceless Men all had way more motivation and interest to take out the Valyrians than the Targs did. In fact the Targs were in a great position at that time , they had grown massive wealth and power controlling the Narrow Sea with the Velaryons , were the only House with dragons in & around Westeros and such went from being a small fish in a large ocean to a huge fish in a small pond by making their westward move. And it did not seem the Targs were drawing any sort of significant attention or ire or under any sort of threat from the Freehold ; so it could be argued the Targs were in far too good of a position to risk getting involved with let alone being solely responsible for the Doom. Especially if the plot failed and the Valyrians got wind of who was behind it , anyone involved would have felt the full wrath of Old Valyria. And i do wonder if beyond the prophetic dreams if the Targs had any qualities that set them apart during the time of the Freehold , despite being one of if not the lowliest House / family among the Valyrian dragonlords. Their particular dragons could have been among the fiercest most violent variety and I wonder if their dragon-bond level / abilities could have been stronger than some of the other dragonlord families , some of whom were rumored to use horns and spells / enchantments that the Targs do not seem to need for dragon bonding. So I wonder if there is anything in that respect with the Targs. Great discussion on a fascinating House Robert , look forward to more of these livestreams about the most interesting Houses in ASoIaF.
@AndrewK237774 жыл бұрын
@Mother of Cats sorry i did not see your reply until now , great sigil / channel icon btw , i did not notice it on my phone originally. Agreed , the Targs did not go out and exercise their leverage in the power vacuum post the Doom on either side of the Narrow Sea and did not even conquer Westeros until 5 generations or so after they left the Freehold. So i think we agree the power advantage and being the only House / family left with dragons in the world shows they definitely benefitted but not that they caused the Doom. Why they left does seem to be Daenys , we know Targs can have accurate prophetic dragon dreams so perhaps that family always took such dreams / visions seriously even before they left Valyria. I do think there could be other factors at play also , perhaps they did not agree with the methods of the other Valyrian dragonlords or were tired of being one of if not the lowliest dragonlords in the Freehold ; and / or as i said in my original comment rather become a huge fish in a small pond being the only people with dragons in and around Westeros rather than rather low on the hierarchy in Valyria. But again does not suggest they caused the Doom , only that they left and that there are numerous possibilities for why they actually did. Per the FM , i do think they executed the plan and assassinated the Fire Mages controlling the Fourteen Flames and there are instances like the Doom with the FM getting revenge after emerging in the horrible mines as slaves in Valyria that would match up with something the FM would want to happen anyway. I do think they would have been eager to execute the plan and it would have matched up with something they would take pleasure in doing but i do not think it is the FM's M.O. to do much politically or power wise outside of what they are hired to do. They mostly seem to be bringers of death / death fanatics above all else. It seems the FM mostly take enormous sums of money to carry out assassinations and missions (it has been referenced many times how expensive their services are) gaining influence that way and the general fear they elicit. So i do think the FM did it and would have wanted it to happen but I do not think they took it upon themselves to get the Doom in motion. I think they took a massive amount money to execute the plan for the Doom but i am not sure they took it upon themselves to do it. The FM may move some pieces and pull some strings for their own purposes which could be what is going on at the Citadel at this point in the narrative but even that we do not know for sure if that is their own plan or again something they were paid to do. For me many overlook with their Doom theories the Iron Bank and Braavosi top brass as candidates. Founded from escaped slaves from Valyria who hated the Freehold's practices (slavery especially) and who were emerging as a global power themselves hidden in the literal and figurative fog from Valyria. To get revenge and take out an obstacle for them in their global power aspirations to me Braavos and the Iron Bank (also located in Braavos) and could have provided massive funding towards this contract and are huge global power players themselves. For me Braavos and the IB are the most likely candidates. And the maesters as well (poisoningremaining dragons after the Dance and could have been in many Targs' ears at the time to help initiate the Dance which had many Targs and dragons kill each other (the Greens were essentially a Hightower faction). So it makes sense the maesters would have played a part taking out dragons in the past (the Doom) being we know they likely hatched plans to do so in subsequent centuries. And in more recent centuries the Citadel have become more and more anti any magical entity and the maesters could have seen either part funding of this or part planning this (likely both) as a preemptive strike against the Freehold who surely would have turned their gaze westward at some point anyway. The Citadel could have sold some coveted and / or magical implement(s) / artifact(s)of some kind to generate funds to pay for or at least contribute towards paying the FM contract also ; ntm the Citadel are bankrolled by one of the richest families in the ASoIaF universe , the Hightowers , anyway. To me the Targs had far too much to lose and were in far too good a position of power and wealth around the time of the Doom (from controlling the Narrow Sea with the Velaryons and through commerce with Westeros as well) , seemingly under no significant threat from any person or group in Westeros or Essos at that time , to risk playing any part in the Doom. Nor do i understand any motivation they would have had to get involved and as we agree their subsequent actions for generations after the Doom do not line up with them being responsible. Personally i think the Iron Bank and Braavosi top brass came together and hired the FM to do it (the FM not so coincidentally are also headquartered in Braavos) and the Citadel could have also been part of the planning or funding as well. Those three orgs to me had the most motivation to bring about the Doom. It could be all 3 groups came together or just the Braavosi part of it but that is my personal theory that I go with ; as i think Braavos and the Iron Bank especially had the means and imo the most motivation to take out the Freehold. I am open to being wrong and i could be wrong and I have not read mnyother theories advocating for the Braavosi part of the Doom but personally think all 3 groups (Braavos , IB and the maesters) came together for this one and i hope at some point we do get some clarity from GRRM regarding this one way or the other. Although with how much GRRM favors ambiguity I do question if he will ever reveal who was behind it.

I suspect we will never know the full truth but my theory originally some Valriyain shepherds got the idea to tame creatures native to area possibly Dragons or some type of drake by feeding sheep. The true secret I suspect to gaining dragons to bond with it is simple exposure and positive association. Nettles fed Sheepstealer enough that he grew docile around her and associated her scent with food and therefore good vibes. Drogon despite being difficult and fearsome didn’t eat Dany when she tried to ride him or threw her off. I suspect if anyone else even another member of her family they would’ve likely died I think the reason it so simple is because first off he imprinted on her and two she fed him when he was young. I suspect the reasons dragon eggs was placed in baby cradle was likely a form of early imprinting technique that likely as time went on became tradition. Once they managed to get one the forty families ancestors overthrew whoever ruled them at time and they establish themselves as a Freehold as a middling power the Ghoscari from east attack them starting numerous wars until finally the Valriyams attack them and utterly destroyed them and adopted there practice of slavery. I suspect around this time the families who had dragons started incest in order to secure inheritance rights. If your child married off someone from another family that family probably gets a dragon as your daughter or son bring with them there dragon/dragon egg. I think Valriyians started mining with slaves and I suspect they found not only riches in earth but also things in the ground horrible creatures. They likely theorized these things most likely are kin to dragons due to living deep in fire and observed how dragons make nests and sometimes burrow in ground. They probably did experiments with magic towards there slaves breeding chimera like deformed creatures with these things from the earth. Once they realized this possible I suspect they began process of themselves to pass on there children once they realized it was easier to bond with dragons this way. I’m assuming this process was horrific so they only did it couple times to themselves and it gave them double reason for incest as they likely not only feared of losing dragons through marriages but wanted to increase the ability of bonding with dragons quickly as possible in order to expand there empire.

Maybe Bran will become the 3rd dragon-rider? It would maintain the thematic balance - Daenrys is the fire-rider because she's pure Targaryen, Bran is the ice-rider because he's pure Stark, and Jon is the balance because he's half Stark and half Targ. And Bran seems to be very magical, and could use his warging ability to control the dragon, so, it could work in the practical sense. And there is a lot of foreshadowing about Bran "flying".

1:11:20 When you list up all the bad the Jaeahaerys did, you start with male preference primogeniture. I'd say that this is actually a very good thing. Of course today equal rights are good, don't get me wrong. But if you have a monarchy with an inheritable crown you need heirs and you should live long enough, that your heir is an adult, when he takes the crown. Problem in medieval ages is, that woman die in childbirth kinda regularly. So Although a woman can rule just as good as a man, she cannot (or has severely worse chances) to secure the succession.

Around the 6:55 timestamp, he discusses Daenys the Dreamer's prophetic dream about the Doom. I'm sure that Daenys' father took her frightening dream seriously, but I think there's definitely other reasons...reasons that have nothing to do with the Targaryens, but information the family is valued enough in this conspiracy to be privy to. It's just a wee bit dramatic for the Targaryens to sell off their holdings, pack up the entire family and basically run away to Dragonstone all because of a girl's nightmare!! 🔮🏃🏼🌋 The worst part about this whole ordeal is that I'm sure we will be debating topics like these for years to come because GRRM is never going to tell us WHAT REALLY HAPPENED! With the work-load he's dealing with...last two novels, "House of the Dragon," Dunk and Egg, "Fire and Blood 2"... I doubt GRRM even knows what really happened himself!! 😂🔮📖🤦🏻🎬🤔🤞

I hope Jon doesn't kill Dany and D & D have said they came up with the broad strokes of that while King Bran came from George which was the the third wtf moment along with the burning of Shireen and the Hodor/Hold the door reveal.

How did house Mormont get a valyrian sword before house stark lol LongClaw is 500 year's old and Ice is 400 year's old
@AndrewK237774 жыл бұрын
House Mormont , not a particularly big or rich House definitely is a bit suspect to have a Valyrian Steel sword at all. But as D D said here could be trade , certainly goods / materials from that area (Bear Island) could be valuable to places in Essos especially who have massively different landscapes and resources available to them or they could have locally traded to a House who was in need of some resource(s) from the Bear Island area and may have been desperate enough (especially during a long winter) that they were willing to trade a Valyrian steel sword in exchange. Also , could have been picked up by a Mormont in the aftermath of a battle or something. Definitely some possibilities of how they acquired it.

Around the 45 minute mark, I had a thought that has never occurred to me, and so far as I know I haven't heard anyone in the ASOIAF community have quite this exact thought: Bloodraven wanted fire + ice. He manipulated events to get Lyanna and Rhaegar together. And here's the new bit - and it's a terrible thought but it wouldn't be outlandish for GRRM's story so far - what if Bloodraven warged into Rhaegar to ensure that Lyanna had a child? I know there's a lot of evidence to counter this idea...but....what if?

I'm still worried they might mess up HOTD. I pray to God they don't apply that stupid "flip a coin" logic to Rhaenyra while comparing her and the other Targaryens.

@1:11:45 I don't think jahearys created the idea that Targaryens were the master race, I thought that idea came from the sevens high septon when Aegon showed up and the faith had no choice but to play it cool and be ok with incest etc so they pushed the idea that the Targs were an exception to the rule.

Hey Robert, I've heard you say the phrase southron ambitions a fair few times in the streams and I'm aware that there are tonnes of different ways to pronounce words so I don't usually point stuff like this out but I think it should be pronounced more like "Suthrun/Sutherun" rather than "Southrawn". But hey who knows that might just be cause I'm scottish.

Can't recall who suggested but if Jon can forget Ygritte when he becomes a fire wight, as happened with Beric. Then if Jon happens to die and come back again then he could forget his love Danerys enabling him to do the Nisa Nisa style dirty on her. Possibly the cost of reanimation is a part of the soul, a cost Beric appears have been unable to keep paying. The greater part of the soul arguably is love, more than the mechanics of swinging a sword or riding horse. The erasing of the remembrance of love as is the price you pay to stay in the fight . It will be interesting to see if Stoneheart recalls Ned and all her children or if some part of that has left her.

Considering the Patreons, live streams, and other monetization opportunities, perhaps it’s time to consider a new camera for your computer? It’s absurd when your screen is split with Joe Magician, it looks like his resolution is 1080p and you’re 540p, if that. I guess it’s good if you want to remain anonymous since no one on the street would be able to identify you. On second glance it looks like you stream from a hotel room so if that’s the case, my bad. Maybe you should consider sleeping at a Red Roof Inn! I stayed there last night and became an export on computer camera resolution!
