Re Jaime and Brienne taking the swords (Widow's Wail and Oathkeeper) North, I'm intrigued by the fact that they are TWIN swords. Jaime seems to be losing his deep connection with Cersei (whether or not you believe the lost hand/Cersei's foot thing), so could the twin swords represent his new, replacement "twin connection" with Brienne? I love the idea of them being two sides of the same coin (or two swords of the same übersword), and her being the "twin" he's chosen for himself.

Apologies to Robert and my fellow mods , I had major technical difficulties on my end about half way through the stream and was not able to get it back before the stream finished. I am watching the remaining half of the vid to finish it up and this was truly a fantastic discussion. Forgive the long comment in advance , not that i so much love Jaime the character but I love how he is written. These morally ambiguous , complex essentially grey characters are my favorite in the ASoIaF narrative / its history and Jaime is truly one of them. Just about every aspect , choice and action of Jaime's character and arc are somewhat paradoxical , often hard to discern and even contradictory. From his choices , his romantic interests , dealings with family, his general outward disposition contrasted with who he thinks he is or is trying to be. The culmination of this grey paradox which is Jaime is his defining act of king-slaying the Mad King (Aerys II). This act itself is grey and paradoxical , strife between his kingsguard oath / duties and doing the generally right thing. This kingslaying act viewed by many as an oath breaking and betrayal when in reality it was more of a selfless act stopping a huge catastrophe and saving thousands of innocents in KL and the city itself , all the while basically no one knows the truth of it. That act generally encompasses the grey duality at work with Jaime as a whole and we see there is a struggle within him of making / keeping oaths and breaking them. Even his treatment of family has ambivalence at times , Jaime was involved with the whole Tysha situation including the initial deception although he was a young man forced by his father Tywin to do so and JL eventually told Tyrion the truth (during Tyrion's KL escape) and yet was generally good to Tyrion in general and even helped Tyrion escape execution. Cersei as well who often brings the worst out of Jaime (some of his worst acts were for or protecting Cersei). Jaime seems to have a total soft spot of love for her and will likely slip back into that and be his undoing but as of now he more than ever in the narrative sees her for who she truly is and to likely have a romantic interest in Brienne could not be more different than Cersei is just further paradox at work with Jaime. That is just Jaime , the struggle of who he is at his core vs who he thinks he is and is striving to become / change , in some ways misunderstood , in other ways flawed , complicated grey behavior , choices and actions. This struggle and balance that he will likely not be able to overcome who he essentially is & his flaws in his quest to become a better person and do the right thing. Jaime is a very complex , paradoxical , grey character in true GRRM fashion ; of which most of us absolutely love to read these types , try to figure them out and discuss.

That's if Jaime survives being lead into an ambush by Brienne and forgives her. Martin cleverly ensured that the master archer is not with Stoneheart or Jaime would definitely be dead.

Talking about when we got into the show, I read the first 3 books back in the early 00s, my friend jokingly told me it was a trilogy. As I got partway through ASOS, I remember thinking, “wow, these storylines are getting further apart instead of wrapping up.” Now, 16 or 17 years later, I’m still waiting for closure, because while the show may have given away the ending, I know the journey there will make a helluva lot more sense when GRRM writes it...

Well no. Remember Jaime knows that Arya is a fake he saw her when she was departing from Kings Landing, he thinks that real Arya is dead. And he told Brienne as much. That's why she is searching only for Sansa

Rewatching. You're talking about the ambivalence between Ned and Jamie. I rewatched some episodes a while back and there is a conversation in the great hall. I think Ned asks Jamie something along the lines of what King A's last words were and Jamie tells the truth "Burn them all." There's a close up of Ned's reaction to that and a flicker in his face, as he realises the truth of what Jamie did, but he never gets the chance to expand on that realisation. So many things would have been different if they'd been able to finish that conversation.

One thing on LSH and Jaime’s vows...yes, he made an oath about the Stark girls, but he also made an oath about not fighting Starks or Tully’s again, which will be a much harder sell considering where Brienne finds him. Probably my favourite major character, btw.

It seems a distinct possibility that Jaime will be offered (or demand, possibly against Stoneheart's wishes) trial by combat to escape the Brotherhood's noose. Unfortunately following that narrative logic it would be Brienne he would be forced to face, and I'm not sure how I see that playing out; they'd both have to be given some incentive not to throw the fight. Podrick being hanged if they aren't seen to be fighting in earnest is one possibility.

Have you read any Dorothy Dunnett, Robert? While it isn't fantasy, i can see it being right up your alley. Perfectly researched, the most brilliantly plotted and real to life characters i have ever read. Very much a real life 'literally' Game of Thrones. I can highly recommend.

I was the same as you: I saw season one and read the books while waiting for season 2 to come out and have been a big fan ever since. The only characters I see as the show characters when I read is Littlefinger and Tywin Lannister. I simply cannot unsee them as their show counterparts because their played the roles so well. Everybody else I see differently in my mind because their descriptions are so different from what they look like in the show. Even Tyrion looks different because book Tyrion is a lot less likable and charming than what Peter Dinklage did with him so to me they are very different. I actually really hate book Tyrion, but I pretty much hate/dislike every single character in the books. They're fun to read about and deeply fascinating characters but I hate them all lol.

Re Jamie and Cersei's death - Because of the valonqar prophecy (Cersei dying with the hands of a "little brother" around her neck after seeing all of her children die). I've held the belief that Jamie will kill Cersei and in the process die himself. I think that it will happen to stop her from doing something like what Aerys was planning on doing at the end of his reign (i.e. killing a lot of people). Just like Aerys, book Cersei is becoming very fascinated with wild fire and she has indicated a mutually assured destruction like mentality. This ending would also give him a completed redemption arc with a mirror of what caused his loss of honor.

I can see him doing something similar as what happened in the show but when he sneaks into wherever cersei is and tries to negotiate with her she will make it plainly obvious that she is insane and he will be faced with the same decision he was made before he became the king slayer and that he will kill her. At least I hope so

I'm not completely sure if I remember correctly, but I think in one of your latest streams Cersei possibly becoming some kind of wight was being mentioned, because of Maggie mentioning pale skin in the prophecy (I've been watching hours and hours worth of ASOIAF content lately so I might mix things up, sorry if I do) What if Jaime kills a wight Cersei, and not actually an alive Cersei? It would make it easier in a way, since he's actually liberating her from being a zombie.

Love your videos. Jaime is one of my favorites. I definitely want him to kill Cersei and the he'll somehow die with her. I don't want Jaime to die with his hateful sister because I want him to move on to another woman. He deserves better than Cersei but it's not my story 😏. I still love my Jaime though. I agree s8ep2 was a great episode in the final season, it's one of the best episodes of the series.

Grrm promised he'd have a copy of AWOW at WorldCon in July. That was months ago and he hasn't mentioned that since. He'll be doing World con via Video appearance. So if he was telling the truth then we'll have it likely by christmas. It's safe to assume at least 80-95% of the book is finished. That's my speculation and I have my reasons to believe that. Expect July to be the month we find out what's going on with the progress for AWOW. I believe this book has taken so long because it's trying to link up all AFFC and ADWD storylines into one book. That's alot of plots and the book is rumored by GRRM to have over 1500 pages. It's going to be one of his best books by far. And should set up "A dream of spring" nicely.

I have been waiting for soooo long and seeing all the other releases and the show has just made me even more desperate. I wouldn't want to use the term angry, but considering the audience he now has, all waiting for 1 thing, and 1 thing only, I'm a little disappointed that it has taken so long. I know about his writing technique and that events will or will not occur depending on how he feels, but I was really hoping that we would have had this a year ago, after the show finished. 12 years is a long time to wait for a continuation...

@@lastpenny849 it's a fair point. Book 4 and 5 were that way. It's a longer wait to have AWOW as one book. But think of it this way. When your ordered copy finally arrives in the mail and you're holding it in your hands, the wait will feel like it's only been for a day. Its an old saying but holds strong till this day " the best things in life come to those who wait". Keep hope my friend. Itll all be worth it soon.

1:29:39 This always annoys me. As a fighter who fights both orthodox ( Right handed) and Southpaw ( Left handed), it would be far more realistic that Jamie training left handed would make him a much better fighter than he was, compounded by the "Southpaw advantage". George has got it right, once you start training with your "wrong" side, things are initially very difficult, your instinct is off and you take far more hits and get caught with shots that normally wouldn't touch you. But, it really doesn't take long to get the wrong side up to the same standard, took me about 8-10 months consistently training in my wrong stance to feel comfortable there and about 18 months before I could do it while sparring. Your body learns to adapt your previous training and you learn to do both to a high level of competence, eventually you will become a far better fighter because your opponent likely hasn't faced or trained with as many "southpaws" as you have trained with "orthodox", you go from being vulnerable to being at an advantage. Obviously Jamie can't switch back to using his right hand and that's a disadvantage but that is far outweighed by the advantage he has. If George has done his research, soon Jamie should be better than he was before. After all, Ser Ilyn Payne was good enough with a sword to be captain of Tywin's guards and Jamie is already getting to a point of matching him. Jamie's thoughts are his own self doubt at his ability, maybe a spark of confidence in a trial by combat with one of the Brotherhood without banners, defeats their best swordsman and that pushes him forward but as a new man.

Yeah I too think jaime is gonna regain his fighting form. George even gave us a point of reference for it with quorin halfhand....he too was a renowned swordsman who lost some fingers on his sword hand. He learned how to use his other hand and was more deadly than ever. Jaime is gonna kick ass again I have no doubts

@@chrisweldon3476 I always saw it as more of a humbling for Jamie that started his arc to leaving Cersei and fulfilling his potential as a human. You see this all the time, people lose a limb and complete feats they never would have able bodied or they become a better person because of the adversity and experiences. I saw this with loads of soldiers I served with, they would lose limbs but become ultra sucessful when leaving.

If GRRM had gotten TWoW out 4-5 years ago, I'd feel some better about our chances of having this story closed.
