It's rare nowadays because of demand and because of the expertise required. Things are mass produced now and those craftsman are rare. It makes maintaining a house such as this so expensive because the parts are special made as they are no longer produced. If they are it is a very niche market. This house is stunning and I would love to live in a such a place. Maybe I would update the garden as well (avid gardener here). However, I have a beautiful garden I wouldn't like to part with where I live so...XD leave it for someone else.

@@Rinsuki it’s the cost, and the fact that the masses don’t have access to the good lumber required, either. In fact, that kind of wood needs to be purchased salvaged, usually and can be difficult to find. Remodelers in the 1920s, 30s and 40s salvaged building materials, but more current remodelers did not. So many old homes are still being torn down. It’s the cost to save it vs the demand and willingness to invest the only non renewable resource-time- and sometimes ignorance plays a part.

The main problem is the colors, i would sajd down the cabinets and give them a dark wood finish, maybe some stone for the countertop and def repainting all the rooms since they have horrible colors. If the home was restored to the original design, you must go OUTside to even access the kitchen and I have toured enough actual Victorian kitchens to be very glad this one was modernized. :)

The 'master bathroom' is another crime against this house. There's nothing worse than walking from a beautifully preserved historic room into a McMansion kitchen and bath. It may have been like a Den with a TV and wood stove back for heating's sake, they may have done this just to feel quint in the late part of evenings as a family? But why it had to look so modern am not sure? Guess that would be the main thing anyone else could change. You are getting this house for a gem of a price, so you could totally change that kitchen and room attached into whatever you wanted? It would really be grand as an almost total-sized kitchen? But maybe they wanted a close family evening time, if children were still small?

That added to crumbling foundations, rotting walls, floors, ceilings, etc, lead and arsenic poisoning in paints, tubs and probably mold.... it's actually a lot more cost effective to tear down and re-build. If you were to search up the listing prices of these older homes and mansions, you'll find that although still expensive, they're much cheaper than they should be because it could take millions just to fix up. I have to disagree about the "warm in winter" part, although it probably would be pretty good if we still had the original wood box stoves in the rooms; a modern heat pump can't quite put out enough heat to warm up the stones so that they radiate heat back at night. Having said that, it is lovely and cool, if a little damp, in the summer, and we often make it into mid-July before having to turn the AC on just in the afternoon.

That house would be $3-$4 million in Sacramento. San Francisco, the few that are that size, would be more like $10-$15 😮 (IF they even hit the market, which they WOULDN'T due to foreign investors with cash offers, that would be the first to know!) Beautiful deal. I really believe the original purpose of the room to the right of the entry is the parlor, through to the library-they often had pocket doors to draw-thus all the shelves, low light over a low table; the dining room is the one adjacent to the kitchen with the swinging door for serving. The fireplaces are fabulous.

I have seen library type shelving in in several Victorian and Edwardian dining rooms. They were original to the house. People in those days had complete and separate sets of china for EVERY occasion. They even had different sets of china for each meal, breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper. These could range from every-day, casual, business, semi-formal, formal and even very rare occasion formal and any or all combinations of these. So, it was common for homeowners to display all of their sets of china all in one place. Thus, all of the shelving in the dining room. It was like a passive yet conspicuous demonstration of their china bragging rights. You did such a beautiful job on this, as you always do.
