The symmetry of the grand staircase is a jaw-dropper. I too love the sun room with hand-painted tiles, and the conservatory. It's interesting to compare the level of detail that could be achieved with tin ceilings, versus plaster. I do wonder what maintenance is required for the tin. The furnishings are beautiful and so tasteful. I have a china cup and saucer hand-painted by my husband's great-aunt Ethel. I believe it was a common activity for ladies of talent at the time. Great story. You were especially glowing over this one, Laine, and I'm not surprised. (Love your blouse...my favorite color!) Great drone work, Kevin. Thank you!

I toured this home in April 2021 and it was so beautiful. As we entered the front door we were greeted by the gracious owners, Beau and Martha Ellen, and their hospitality was amazing. We were served a refreshing beverage of Marlsgate 1888 Punch, followed by a tour of the beautiful outside grounds, then a delicious lunch in the dining room, and topped off with a tour of the vintage house. We learned a lot of history about the plantation and I would absolutely recommend adding this to your list of places to visit.

Absolutely beautiful home. I’m impressed that so much of the original buildings and land remain! I also appreciate that you showed the true “planter’s home”. So often people don’t realize that in most cases the word plantation was equivalent to farm, very few lived as Gone With the Wind would have us believe. My grandparents lived in one of those homes and although it had beautiful 14 foot ceilings, giant porches, etc. it wasn’t a mansion by any measure. Also loved that she painted china. My great grandmother painted china and I have some of it. I also have her antique French Haviland (service for 14) and it is clear to see that Haviland, Limoges, and Nippon influenced her greatly.

I do think that the word is pronounced "teester" not "tester" and is sometimes spelled that way. If you have heard differently, please enlighten me. And the glass panel at the top of the door may have been to allow in more natural light.
@OurRestorationNation2 жыл бұрын
Pardon the expression, but “teester” is a Southern bastardization of the word. TEST-er is the pronunciation used in Europe (where the style originated) and in other parts of the US.
@vernicethompson48252 жыл бұрын
@@OurRestorationNation Thank you so much for clarifying that for me! I have lived in Virginia for over 30 years and have thought the Southern pronunciation was preferred. I am glad to learn that it is regional. I can only guess at how it arose. I enjoy your video tours!

What a lovely place. But …good gracious! There is a TON of furniture in every space. If the owners ever need money for repairs they can sell some pieces or suite off and not miss it. The window in the side entry door to the dining room - was it designed simply to mimic the other transom windows above the doors? Agreed- I love the Art Nouveau tin ceilings. Cool basement kitchen! I had the good fortune to have a beyond the ropes tour and discuss the restoration and also building furniture replicas of the Hermitage by Alf Sharp a well renown and respected craftsman. The homes you feature my not be as famous as some but are just as interesting as the Natchez home tour or the Mansions of Newport and deserve a deeper look into the people who and how construction and sourced the materials to build the wonderful places.

I always wondered what this home was like. My neighbor in Little Rock, in the restored Quapaw Quarter Park Place condo, was Mimi Dorch, and she had just moved from Scott at the time, in 1980. I think this mansion was her home before her move to our wonderful condos, across from the Arkansas Art Center. Mimi was a lovely lady, and I know she loved the arts, and she helped get the Repertory Theater started in Little Rock. She was so friendly, gracious, and so pleasant to be around. I don't know how she fit within the Dorch family, but think she had divorced her husband. I only lived in this condo for a year, and know she later moved into a beautiful twin historic home in the Quapaw Quarter, that was originally owned by brothers in the train industry, and I think she restored it. Wonderful memories from days past. I'm glad I knew Mimi Dorch. I loved seeing this mansion, and imagining Mimi enjoying the beauty and serenity. Thank you for sharing.
