(Get your first purchase from Blueland for 15% off by clicking my link bit.ly/3zwgBCs ! Now shipping to the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia & New Zealand!)
The Breakers is the grandest of Newport's summer "cottages" and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family's social and financial pre-eminence in the Gilded Age. Boasting 70 rooms and 48 bedrooms
Built by Cornelius Vanderbilt II, one of the richest men in America, The Breakers was everything a millionaire of the Gilded Age could want in a summer getaway. A classic Italian palazzo design, the finest American and European craftsmanship, views of the sea, and modern technology combined to make the ideal setting for luxurious living and entertaining.
The Breakers has a history entertained presidents, royalty and guests from across the world for more than 125 years and today is visited by hundreds of thousands of people each year.

This is such a beautifully preserved home of that era! It’s amazing to see exactly how homes were kept and decorated. It would have been interesting to see the maids quarters and about the magnitude of staff needed to run a home like that! Melanie is very knowledgeable and did an amazing job! She could host her own show!

Perfectly preserved “moment in time” with timeless elegance, proportion and irreplaceable sculptural elements. Impossible to replicate but far superior to the massive abominations of the mega mansions that can not be comparable to these Newport mansions or those on Long Island’s Gold Coast where elegance and timelessness were defined and remain that way today.

I’ve always loved this home. Biltmore is only 2 hours from me and I’ve been there probably 15 times over the years. It is hard to believe it was only built in two years so that is something I question with all of these guilded age mansions, the timeline that they always give. Anyway, enjoyed the tour of this one from the comfort of my own home ☺️

Why is it that such magnificent and beautiful buildings aren't built anymore? What happened to the architects? Did they not pass on the building to plans to the next generation? If we are so advanced today, how come we can't replicate such buildings anymore?

Did she say it's 138,300 square feet? Wow! The cost to replicate something like this, with all of the intricate and rare materials on this grand scale would cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

I toured The Breakers back in the day, around the time the 1974 version of The Great Gatsby was released (set on LI but filmed around Newport), and it is fascinating from an artistic and architectural standpoint. But I'm having a hard time with it today, in light of world events. These robber barons really set up the current system we have that's creating such a tremendous wealth gap and causing undue economic suffering. I still prefer the little apartments that people have furnished with thrifting and sidewalk finds. ☺

I'm not sure if someone has answered already, (8:27) the jockey chair - it was custom, especially in the Edwardian period, to weigh your house guests as they arrived and then upon departure. To see how much weight you put on during your visit with all the multicourse meals. I suspect they were following the English tradition and there is possibly a book somwhere with guests and their weights.

Hi the weighing chair might be a copy of the British Royal family's (somewhat strange) Christmas tradition of weighing the family before Christmas festivities to actualise weight gain as a sign of partaking in feasting. ( no pressure !!!)

Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney was Anderson Cooper's great aunt -- and the heroine in the infamous custody battle between Gertrude and Gloria Vanderbilt's mother when she was a child. Anderson's 2016 documentary with him and his mom Gloria, Nothing Left Unsaid, is not to be missed!! The Breakers (naturally) is featured briefly in his film... but it's truly fascinating to see the room where Gertrude grew up! The flowers on the wall....

I've toured this place, and though it's built to impress, it left me more uneasy than awed. It struck me as a very unhappy place and I was happy to leave. It was the first time visiting a great house left me feeling that way and I have zero desire to return. Btw, I read the history of the house afterwards and learned about the abuse the workers faced building these mansions. Par for the times?

...so, the weighing chair may have been used for jockeys (although ive never heard of tht), the original reason for them and the reason why they are in all English and Irish country homes is...a visitor coming to stay would get weighed, spend days eating, hunting and shooting, then get weighed at the end of their stay to make sure they put weight on. A few extra pounds on ment that they were well taken care of. Your welcome 🫡

It’s obvious that the only thing that changed in the summer for the wealthy owners of these homes was the location. There was no relaxing the mores and habits of these people just because it was summer. Sadness really in all that wealth and beauty. Appearances were everything.
