I have been asked so many time to make a house tour video so here it is finally!
We bought this house December 2016 and I spent almost an entire year renovating the top floor before we could move in, It had no insulation on the roof so I ripped out all the plaster and started from scratch. I then have gradually worked my way down the house as and when time and money permited. I made all the box sash windows and have done 99.9% of the work myself! The only contractor I have had in is the plasterers to do the massive wall in the entrance hallway, which needs to be nice and flat.
Shortly after finishing the top floor and fitting the box sash windows I started to document the renovation project on youtube!
here is a playlist whihc includes all the renovation videos;

Looking good, my friend was going to put new interior doors in his house once, he wanted panel doors instead of the plain council style doors, then i said you don't need to replace the doors you already have panel doors, i peeled of the hard board an found the original panelled doors behind them, he was astonished to find his cheap £20 each doors was actually £100 each doors! The 60s-70s have a lot to answer for covering nice doors to have the clean look!

I purchased a rotted geodesic dome home that was unfinished and about ready to fall over due to the original roof not being done right and the owner builder giving up on life after his wife left him. Probably due to an unfinished home. I purchased it with my wife to finish and make into our dream home but just after I finished re framing, doing all the electrical and plumbing, she left me. Now I need to finish it. I've replaced about 80 to 85% of the framing, 100% of the electrical and almost all of the plumbing. The roof is brand new. I need to make a few more skylights to finish off the roof. Build a deck and that's it for the framing. Then I can start on the insulation, drywall, flooring, finish carpentry and paint. I can't wait till I'm done. You do beautiful work and it inspires me to get my projects completed one at a time.

Fascinating to see the old and the new side by side. As a serial house (in the same area) renovator I can see where you're going and it will be fabulous. There's something about Victorian terraces that is inherently grand and it's great to see you reinstating it.

A local developer has just completed a row of Victorian terraces near us. They weren't in the best shape, but they've completely stripped out every period feature. They just look like every other new build inside. Such a shame.

@@Valisk A friend of mine is an electricians and on good terms with some massive-scale property owners so he got to use a grand ca.-1910 Vienna apartment for a month last year. The long-term tenant (lived there for 80+ years, first with his parents, then alone) had passed and renovations hadn't yet started. The place was a bit of a mausoleum with its amazing 50s and 60s decor and gloomy lighting and certainly slightly worse for wear (the white kitchen sink had lost its entire porcelain coating on the bottom, don't ask me how that happened) but there were some terrific original features like hidden doors (plural), original oak herringbone parquet, etc. The owner stripped out everything (we saved as much as we could, like the tiled stove in the bedroom, as much of the original floor tiles in the kitchen and bathroom as we could get, even some of the parquet), shuffle rooms around and rebuild almost like a new place. Now everything's gleaming white, the cheapest oak engineered hardwood throughout, some of the lovely original doors replaced, all the original door hardware gone, a shame!

@@benjaqsonworkshop9974 listing should apply to interiors, or some sort of law that restoring a period property increases the market value, unworkable idea but short termism and pandering to cheap trends needs to be curbed somehow. Wow, we lived in Thorpe St, near Scarcroft Primary in York in the 60's I remember we still had the scullery downstairs which scared the daylights out of me as young lad, coal was delivered to the scullery by the trap door in the pavement out the front of the house & the outside loo down the back of the yard, even still had the old laneway down the back where the dunny man used to come with his horse & cart and swap out the cans...

Love the Discworld reference, and as always it's so good to see someone lovingly restore an old lady like this. The glass block shower is so gorgeous! And I'm VERY excited to see the rest of the house, esp the kitchen. I know it's usual for washing machines to be in a kitchen in the UK, but as an American I saw that big stone table in the basement and went 'folding table!!! for laundry!!!' XD bc we keep washer/dryer in the basement a lot of the times, out here. I do wonder if you have plans for what the basement is going to be? Or will it just stay like that? It'd be a cool room whatever it is, for sure! Oh, also--where are all the paintings in the stairwell from? Is your wife a painter?

That ceiling rose in the sitting room is similar to one my dad renovated in our Victorian house, in Lincoln. What looked like balls or lumps turned out to be crafted roses etc, but they’d so many layers of paint that they’d lost all definition. I think he spent more time on that ceiling rose than rest of the room, picture rail, coving and all.

Nice to see the whole thing, I can very much sympathise, my dads been restoring the ‘family home’ for going on 20 years, still not done (if there is such a thing as done) but getting there, pretty much started in the state yours was in, identical hooks and stone table in the cellar, buggered Minton tiles and everything! (He opted to just screed in the missing tile voids and carpet the whole thing over, leave it to the next guy to figure out, although mintons are ‘in’ at the moment and you can buy them new, hellishly expensive mind, along with brand new lincrusta and linseed based linoleum, never thought those would come back into style. I don’t envy the kitchen job, the Victorian kitchen footprints are just never big enough for modern needs, lots of trial and error working out how you ‘think’ you want it to look, whether it ‘works’ or not is something you only find out when it’s too late to change anything! dad, my brother and me did the kitchen ourselves, whilst having no alternative cooking facilities, that was ‘fun’. Will be interested to know how you did the plaster coving, that and wall plastering was the only thing we contracted out. The pride you’ll feel at the end will make it all worth it, only to be matched by the jealousy of us viewers when we see your turntable setup!

Love the way you have chosen to outfit the rooms - unique and not slavishly following trends. Absolutely gorgeous! I love the tiles in the entranceway! Looking forward to following you along … thanks you for sharing!

Happy New Year! Awesome work, especially the curved glass block wall, stunning! I can sympathize with the “ deliberation process” one goes through especially regarding flooring for an historic home. I love the old wide planks under the layers of “updates, she says too much work… In the end we both love the 1861 Nova Scotia home and all of it’s eccentricities. It shows from your completed work and all of your videos which I absolutely love, that you love your place too. Thanks for sharing all of your hard work for all to see and be inspired !

So many videos do not show process as deeply as you do and to see from whence your projects often begin makes them even more impressive in their completion thank you it’s inspirational

So far, so good. Your work and skill set is fabulous. I thank you for inviting us all in on your ongoing project. I'd bet that you're looking forward to the day when you can say 'yes, it's done'. Although as the owner of an old house something tells me that you'll never really be done. Congratulations on the work so far. And Happy New Year.

Yep, you’re right, it’ll never really be done. Once Russ thinks all the work is complete, his wife will start to plan and mutter to herself. She’ll be out with the measuring tape and when he asks her what she’s up to, she’ll say “Nothing!”. Then she’ll be browsing Instagram, looking at other home renovations, favouriting this, that and the other. Then one day, she’ll make him a nice bacon sarnie, put on those big eyes and say, “Darling, you know I’ve always wanted a corner suite but it won’t fit in our living room? Well I’ve measured it out and it turns out it will fit if we can just move the doorway a few feet to the left”. And then you realise she’s talking about a retaining wall and you groan…

Your talent is admirable, this house is a perpetual construction site, is one lifetime enough to put everything in order!? My respect for this motivation.
