In many ways House Tyrell serious rise to prominence in the Reach was post Dance of Dragons Civil War. House Hightower's political status took a hit due to the Civil War.

Politically, yes. Financially, they were better than ever. The Rogare Bank collapse affected several houses, the Crown included. They then built their own bank after that. They weren't said to be as rich (or even richer) than the Lannisters for nothing.

Yeah, the depictions of it as a lone castle in the middle of the wilderness is kinda too idyllic. I'd imagine it'll have at least a permanent village outside it walls, close to the bridge and the docks.

Yeah realistically, Highgarden should be the largest city in Westeros, followed by Saltpans. Cities at the mouths of major navigable rivers have a massive advantage, and the Mander, and the Trident are the most trafficked rivers.

Highgarden is agricultural, I'm sure there are settlements or villages around Highgarden though it didn't become a major city because its main industry is farming. Forming a compact city is not their priority because they need vast spaces of land to farm.

@@mmjj7685 the reach is nothing but land and space to farm its literally known for this and if oldtown which is on the mouth of a smaller river then highgarden near the largest river at the center of the reach and between oldtown and lannisport then this would be the most lucrative city in westeros

Interestingly enough, perhaps the Hightowers preferred to not be the forefront of Reach Politics. Often said that Oldtown and the Hightowers are the true power in the Reach, while the Tyrells were the Political Face. Tyrells do have the food and numbers indeed, but House Hightower is way too powerful for them to be cast aside as merely a Vassal house. Granted, given the size of the Reach, being second only to the North in size from the looks of it, perhaps 2 major houses in charge of it is what's needed.

I always view it like this, and it helps make sense to me The Tyrell didn't have much if any real power in the reach at the time While yes I'm sure that them not fighting Aegon help a lot But let's think about it for a second If he gave the seat to a different house It only make them even stronger, like the hightowers was and are a extremely powerful and influential Do you really want give them even more power And even think about many of those houses with blood ties to house gardener Where thinking about the once that where fighting against him, do you really want to give more power to a house that was your enemy like 5 seconds ago Edit: Also by giving it to a house that didn't fight against him, it also be use as a message Be surrender and be loyal to me and you and your house will be rewarded handsomely Fights against me and or show disloyalty and face Extinction

I also think it could have been a good politico distraction Think about it the houses in the reach where arguing about who really deserve to rule highgarden Which every minute spent debating that, was a minute that they wasn't challenging his rule Which would mean he'll give him time to solidify the power that he had just won

I wish Willas and Garlan existed in the show. More Tyrells should’ve been in the show instead of just 4 members of the family. Lady Olenna and Margaery were great and I personally liked Loras because of his carefree nature but Mace Tyrell was a joke and he should’ve had more sons instead of just one.

To be honest, why would House Gardner send ALL their men to this battle? And you're telling me they all died, while the single Lannister guy lived? Not to mention, all Gardner men were also of fighting age? No male babies or children, too young to venture out to battle? If the Tyrells somehow convinced all the Gardners to go out to battle to get themselves killed.... I dunno, that sounds insanely coincidental. And no Tyrells were at the battle either? Shoot, if it really was their plan, then for one, Tyrells did their own Kin dirty. Secondly, they'd make even the likes of Littlefinger and Varys proud. Also, wasn't it Hugh Hammer who said perhaps he should've been made Lord of Highgarden, since the Tyrells didn't declare for anyone and sat out while the other great houses contributed to their perspective side? I forget. Either way, lucky for the Tyrells, they got by rather well... as did the Hightowers, despite their loss of their Lord, Otto, and Alicent's imprisonment

Anyone believe that the tyrell’s are the individually weakest paramounts? The only other option would be the Tullys but I believe that they were closer to their vassal’s strength, such as the blackwoods or Mallisters

At the time of the conquest almost certanly. I think that was by Aeogons delibarate design. The Reach is the most powerfull (among the richest and the most populated) of the conquered kingdoms. It only makes sense to appoint a weak paramount that is not able to use the entire might of the Reach to attack the crown. Of course by the time of the main story, the Tyrells are much more established and in control of the Reach and therefore much more dangerous to the iron throne. And considering the Lannister gold is drying up, they might be the leading house after the story is done.
