I grew up surrounded by stunning English Tudor homes. I even grew up in one. When the comment was made that “we couldn’t touch the outside of the home, nor would we.” It saddened me to see such a modern restoration. Respecting the integrity of the era of the home with a less than modern vibe would certainly have been kinder.

Designers need to learn to respect the character of a home instead of copy-and-pasting whatever the current trends are into a space. I was happy to see the designer did this, even if only in some places. The wood shiplap to "warm it up" in the dining room was a missed opportunity since English wood paneling is a trademark of this architectural style. The modern white kitchen looks nice but feels out of place. This kitchen should have been more traditional to match the character of the home. Instead of a modern island put a rustic wood table for prep work. Hang copper cookware, use exposed plate racks, and a French gas stove would look less dated in a decade and feel like it's always been there. It's possible to respect the Tudor style while also making it beautiful, functional, and contemporary. Why do many people act like it's not? I appreciate the good choices the designer has made, but I think there were some missed opportunities.
@Timmakesmusic2 жыл бұрын
Completely agree. Was excited to see this video but was so underwhelmed by the outcome. Such a missed opportunity as you say. I was expecting a modernised take on Arts and Crafts/Tudor revival, maybe some antiques layered in with more contemporary pieces, some traditional warm woods, fabrics or finishes used in new ways, perhaps some pieces crafted by modern artisans, but it was just a mismash of 2010s interior design trends. A lot of the furniture and decor feels charmless and mass produced - the complete antithesis of the Arts and Crafts design philosophy. Some other baffling choices too. Can't believe thay removed wood panelling and put in a shiplap fireplace. Why are the checkerboard tiles in the hallway so large? Completely out of scale with the size of the space. And the less said about the dining room the better. The kitchen has some nice touches but doesn't really fit the style of the home. I get the impression it was redone by people with no particular fondness for, or interest in, the orignal style of the home. If they love their home, good for them, but I think the video is dramatically overselling the design.
@ElliesChaoticWorld2 жыл бұрын
As designers we also have to respect our clients. It was tastefully done.
@s4awd2 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Clear unstained English oak paneling would have been perfect as it’s bright but fits w the home. I’m sure the clients want what they want but yes a missed opportunity.
@PenguinTac0s11 ай бұрын
It’s not an art piece in a gallery they updated everything because people live in it and want to enjoy modern amenities in the comfort of their own home
@CheeseBae11 ай бұрын
@@PenguinTac0s that's exactly the nonsense I'm talking about. This idea that only a white kitchen, waterfall island, or shiplap is "functional" is wrong. Let's stop the lazy trend following and actually create something that won't look obviously dated in 10 years.

It's so important to have that client trust & their complete confidence in you to deliver just what they want; if they hold the reins too tightly during the process, the magic you can work as a designer becomes quite restricted, and when those limitations are evident in the end result, the client often puts it down to the designer making poor choices! I understand some clients not wanting to give complete free rein, as these designs and implementing them can be extremely costly; but I think growing a well established design business where you have built a name for delivering _above and beyond_ your client's greatest wishes for their home is a very powerful thing, because it provides new clients with assurance of quality and allows them to see for themselves that it's in their best interests to fully rely on your expertise, and in some cases, to take risks and go beyond their comfort zone in order to achieve truly outstanding results. It's a great responsibility however, once the designer has gained a client's trust. I love how this designer pays attention to what many would perhaps call 'smaller details', such as incorporating the bar for entertaining, and taking note of the client's love of reading; to employ little details in certain rooms of the house which support and encourage the enjoyment of the client's hobbies is something that has the potential to bring a smile to them on countless occasions as they use the space. Thinking outside the box when designing spaces doesn't always mean spending more money or time, but it has the ability to bring a big impact to everyday life!

The “young” couple wanted a mid century modern home! What they did not want was a proper English cottage in the countryside. So viewers that’s why you got this type of interior because this couple just wanted a standard normal American style home and I feel they only bought this home cuz they thought it looked grand on the outside! If you want and love traditional real authentic English cottages then go to Pinterest and Instagram cuz there’s tons of users who have these beautifully old cottages who are actually living in England Wales Scotland Ireland which I feel are the only places where you can buy and live in a proper cottage! In America, we are just not known for cottage homes not like the UK! From their chocolate boxes to their thatched roof cottages, they are the only ones who know how to decorate and style a cottage home no matter if it’s Victorian or Georgian they know about mixing the old with the new and they create thee most stunningly cosy interiors!

This Reno missed most of the important elements of the home. You can update and create a newer feel while being respectful of the home. Many British designers do it perfectly. The tile in the front hall is awful. The former dining room with a shiplap corner fireplace is straight out of the 70’s. The kitchen with bistro shelves look very cheap. Most of the soft furniture looks very inexpensive, a few antiques layered in each room along with modern B&B style sofa’s would have created a much more sophisticated update.

The previous owner was no better than the current owner in understanding the beauty of a Tudor revival home of this stature. The interiors are still a hideous blend of trendy boxes, filled with dated, off the shelf, nonsense. The interiors would be perfect for a new build in a condominium complex off the Interstate in a soulless development where builders ply buyers with new, clean, contemporary, cookie cutter model homes for perfect little wives and husbands to live perfectly boring, and thoughtless lives.

Awful. So disappointed in designers who can't do anything but white and gray. None of this inside speaks Tudor history. It's basic trendy and cheap looking. Jarring to go from that exquisite exterior to that ultra modern inside. Designers need to take some history classes and respect historical homes.
