17 minutes From start to finish, this project took me 17 minutes. The one thing I did different was to watch the driveshaft and learn the direction it was turning. Once I knew the motor thought the door was closed, I unplugged the unit, loosened all the bolts holding the motor, removed the two rail bolts, slipped the motor back, dropped the coupler in place, pushed the motor forward, reattached the rail bolts and tighten the motor support bolts, connected the trolly to the rail, test, and clean up. Yes, it is that straightforward! Thanks for your lesson. Dr. Mike

Great Video. Solved my problem. I ran into couple of challenges. First when removing the 2 bolts from track make sure someone is holding the track as mine separated and fell. Second before replacing the coupler bring the carriage back to the starting point my manually rotating the track side clock wise until carriage is close to the motor. Once you connect the coupler it is almost impossible to bring carriage back. Whether using the adjustment screws or manually rotating as both motor and track is moving together thus negating the impact. Jerry mentioned this in the video but didn't emphasize too much. Other than that great video. Saved over $150 atleast on a service call.

Jerry, great video, thank you. It was exactly the problem I needed to fix on a similar Craftsman unit. It might be helpful to clarify the drive screw adjustment for the trolley. If the trolley is too far off from where it needs to be, the UP DOWN adjustments won't provide enough movement to correct it. I can think of two ways to do this: 1) before installing the coupler remove the opener cover (probably two screws under light cover) so you can see the limit switch assembly inside. The limit contact rides on the center screw that is connected to the drive gear. It rides between the UP limit contact and the DOWN limit contact on the two screws to either side. The trolley position on the track should "ballpark" match the limit contact position on the screw, relative to the UP and DOWN ends of the screw - rotate the drive screw manually to get it there, install the coupler, then follow the video. 2) before installing the coupler, run the opener to one end and note the direction the gear is turning while it runs. Once the opener gear is stopped, unplug unit and manually turn the drive screw in the same direction it would have turned had the coupler been in place, i.e. attached to the drive gear you just watched. Turn the screw until the trolley gets to the end in that direction. Then install the coupler and follow the video.
@fixitwithjerry61614 жыл бұрын
Yea you're right. I do mention manually adjusting the drive screw in the video but I should have made this more clear and mentioned this BEFORE installing the coupling. I realized this after shooting the video. I'm glad you pointed it out since I'm sure you're not the first one to have the same realization.

@@ashleyhart-mcglynn7767 If you have already put the unit back together and tried turning the adjustment screws, then you may have to disassembly the drive screw from the coupling again. What do you mean to make sure it does not exceed the garage door limits? That’s the only thing that is confusing to me
@fixitwithjerry6161 Жыл бұрын
If the trolly is positioned in a way to move farther than the opener is designed to move then you could cause damage. It is possible for this to happen since the drive gear can move independently from the drive screw when the coupling breaks. It's hard to explain, but basically the garage door computer loses the start and stop positions when the coupling breaks. This means it could try and move the garage door past the open or closed position. Most have fail-safes that will stop the door before damage occurs.

I'm not sure about Linear but it could be something similar. Some garage door openers are screw drive, belt, or chain driven. My craftsman doesn't have the white wires on the rail, but my guess is that the travel limits need to be adjusted?
@fixitwithjerry6161 Жыл бұрын
It sounds like an alignment issue. Make sure you know where the trolly and carriage are. If the rail is bending then something is moving and trying to move past its limits. I would bet the trolly and carriage are not in the right spot. Start by using the manual disconnect and then press the open/close button and allow the trolly to move until it stops. If it hits the end of the rail on either side, then you need to disconnect the coupling and manually turn the drive shaft away from where it stopped. Hope that makes sense.

@@fixitwithjerry6161 That might explain it. Springs are matched to the weight of the door, so when someone changes the weight of the door, the springs need to be replaced. Also, the middle spring is galvanized. Galvanized springs are not "true" springs. They get weak over time. One of the problems with that is when people have garage door openers, they may not notice spring is weak until something breaks.

It's hard to troubleshoot without actually being there but it sounds like there may be an adjustment issue. Did this happen suddenly or after damage / a repair?

@@Beluel Check to make sure its not binding up somewhere. It would be unusual for the opener to lose its open and close stop settings but you could check that too.

Yea, I didn't do that. Not my door but I'm guessing they needed more lift since they added wood siding to the outside of the garage door, something I wouldn't recommend either. It's no wonder this coupling broke.
