Since I've brought this up to people before, I wanted to take some time to give an introduction to and recommendation of my favorite manga series, Land of the Lustrous, otherwise known as Houseki no Kuni. This series has had a profound influence on my life and I'd like to take more time to talk about it in the future.
If I can just get one more person to be a fan of my gem Phosphophyllite, I'll consider this a massive success.
By the way Phos did nothing wrong.

Note. As soon as I noticed the Buddhist philosophy in the first season I had a feeling in my chest.. I knew this would end bad. Vishnu took on his multi armed form I am become death destroyer of worlds. And then chapters 90 - 95 happened..... I binged this manga in a single night st collage. I finished the anime I'm a day. Then had to read the whole manga. That was the most mind fucking I've ever experienced in 36 hours in my life. Didn't help I was experiencing severe existential problems due to a certain syrup consumed at the time.

I wouldn't call it underrated actually. If we talk about anime it rated really high on MAL and was nominated\won numerous nominations of Crunchyroll anime awards 2017, including "best animation", "best action" and took 3rd place in "anime of the year" category. It just not super popular, but it's to be expected for such niche seinen title. In Japan though this franchise is pretty big.

It’s been stated thousands of times now that Japanese artists never see a dime from American artists. Your money will strictly go to the publishers and streaming services. If you want to support them, buy straight from Japan

So, I put LOTL down for a bit to let the chapters possibly stock up, but when I left off I was feeling SOME type of way. First, I’ll put here that my comment is 100% spoilers, just a warning. First. I’d totally break Cairngorm’s knee-caps with literally anything. I despise them. Secondly, this series really does a great job showing Pho transform throughout. As Pho literally loses parts of herself, she begins to replace them and due to this her overall personality changes. After her legs go, she is definitely a bit more mature, but overall kept her lighthearted nature. It wasn’t until she lost her arms and seen Antarcticite basically die that she took a change for a more bleak personality. Her bubbly nature was gone, and she no longer took everything as lightly as before. It was a BIG change compared to the Phos we met at the beginning of the series, HOWEVER, it wasn’t until Phos lost her entire head that she truly became an almost different person. Once Phos gets Lapis’s head, she also gets a bit of Lapis’s personality and memories. Phos is no longer who we once knew, it it’s stunning and scary how well the author portrays this. Phos acts almost completely different than she did before, while keeping the same ambitions as before. Also, I’d like to point out that everything Phos ever did in the series was inherently to help her gem friends, which the series does well at making Phos’s efforts look for nought with. Alright. My rant is done 😔

Binged the anime over the course of a day. I'd argue Phos at the beginning of the series doesn't feel like the same character as Phos at the end of the anime. Early Phos was childish and naive, but I think they lost a lot more than just those traits by the end.

also, strange as it may sound, it's "loose parts of themself". When "them" is used as a generic term for genderlessness by encompassing both genders, it's singular, so, Phos, which is singular, can't loose parts of "themselves", but only of "themself", just like a king or queen can only refer to "Ourself", never "Ourselves".
