I think Megatron chose to kill Dreadwing in favor of starscreem,despite of Dreadwing clearly being better in all aspects is because Megs wanted a second in command capable enough to lead his troops(which starscreem is, considering he's air commander) but weak enough to be punished and bossed around whenever he felt like it,which Dreadwing,being comparable to Prime himself was obviously not.

You're exactly right. Prime Megs is incredibly directionless. To the point that even though Airachnid isn't my favorite, she brings up a great point in abandoning his obsession with Prime and Earth. And makes you root for Starscream as even though he'd rule like a vein king, at least the Decepticon Army's numbers wouldn't be wasted on an obsession with a small band of Autobots.

One of the key issues with TFP is that it thinks it's far deeper than it really is. You can tell the writers want to show off with how overwritten, almost pseudo Shakespearean much of the dialogue is. Like they wanted you to know they'd thumbed through a thesaurus. I mean, come on. Reliquary? Contrast that with BW and TFA where the cast, for the most part, spoke in a much more down to earth fashion. Often it sounded like conversations between real people were happening onscreen. There were exceptions, sure, but they made sense for why they'd be there. Megatron is a theatrical ham, Silverbolt is an old fashioned chivalrous type and Dinobot is implied to actually be a fan of Shakespeare. Prime meanwhile is plagued by too many verbose, melodramatic exchanges that you just know the writers were behind the keyboard patting themselves on the back with self satisfied grins. For all the show's long-winded, pretentious exchanges, ultimately, it just amounts to red truck guy fighting silver jet guy because he am good and other one am bad.

They'r also some wasted characters as well. Skywarp dies in the same episode he appears in, (so much for "the great warrior from the legend") Breakdown is killed off but nobody talks about him after that except two times when Knockout mentions him, same with Dreadwing, there is no mention of him atfter his death. Just imagine how awesome it would have been if we had Dreadwing and Skywarp work togheter. We barely have twins in transformers, it would've been cool. Edit: also Breakdown didn't deserve to die like that.

This is a really interesting analysis. I was familiar with some of the issues regarding the aligned continuity, and I never bought into it, but you bring up a lot of other points I didn't notice until now, especially in regards to Megatron. Later in the series, there was a point at which Megatron enters Starscream's mind, where none of his secrets or motivations could be hidden. This had the potential to fix the issues and put a decisive conclusion to "why doesn't Megatron just kill Starscream." It resurfaced every treacherous scheme Starscream has embarked upon, even the ones Megatron wasn't fully aware of... ...and Megatron still lets him live and rejoin the Decepticons... I think the reason why I held the show in high regard was the performances and how cinematic the show was. Despite the issues with the writing, most of the cast did phenomenally well. Cullen and Welker know how to act off each other. I think my favorite arc with Megatron and Optimus in TFP was actually the beginning of Season 2, with Prime reverting back to Orion Pax in personality and memory, and how Megatron took full advantage of that. It is kind of the amnesia trope, but it was kind of a fresh take for the two characters and highlighted how cunning Megatron can be when the need arrises. It's shortlived though.

I never watched all of Prime, I just watched a lot of clips and compilations. Therefore I don’t have a concrete opinion on it. However I cannot help but love how well you made this video and constructed your arguments. Especially with Optimus and Megatron as outside of their voices, I saw little of what made me love them in G1. Also 37:27 was brilliantly done. Perfectly sums up how silly his character conclusion was.

TFP is my personal favourite, although it’s largely due to its visuals, animation, character designs, voice acting, and the overall darker ambience and sombre tone. Plot-wise, admittedly I didn’t enjoy season 3 as much as I did the first two, and the movie felt rushed and dragging at the same time. I feel like there are a lot of brilliant ideas in the series that just wasn’t given the chance to properly kick off. Just like you said: wasted potential. As for the characters, the show focused on everybody and nobody. We don’t get to really delve deep into any of them; the best we got was probably the backstory between Optimus and Megatron, but even that was glossed over and eventually forgotten. I think this show had that one chance to explore the history and relationship between the two leaders in more depth and maybe…emotional significance, but instead was forced to make way for scavenger hunting and introductions to more characters that are explored superficially at best. Maybe the problem is the same as it always has been for the Transformers franchise, where shows are intended to promote toy sales. Because of this, TF shows can’t really just have/focus on a ‘main character’, the ‘main pro/antagonist’ and expand on the complexities of relationships, give them character developments and real meaningful personal journeys, because screen time needed to be given to too many characters (other toys on the shelf). Although Cyberverse and Earthspark come close to fixing this (according to the snippets I’ve seen of these two shows), the WFC trilogy too.

Honestly, I really love TF Prime. I think you made a lot of good points that I agree with, such as the Predacons and Megatron's silly redemption at the end of the movie. But overall, I thought it was a great series that had some great fights, fun and interesting characters, and some twists to the usual formula. I think its one of the better Transformers series.

I would like to think, as shows that have ended, TFP is great for fandom fodder/speculation and fan media, while something like TF Armada Is more conclusive and book ending (looking at both detached from their timelines/series, being the Aligned Continuity and the Unicron Trilogy respectively) which is why both can be so beloved by many people as they do. Same can be said for TF Animated, barring it's unfortunate cancellation; kinda has the best of both worlds with that, as it ended on a satisfying note while also having so much more unexplored and unexplained. All is sufficient to say, Animated is my favorite, Armada being a close second, and Prime being in third. Great think-piece, it helps me understand why I don't feel that TFP was the "best transformers show of all time." I really enjoyed it when I watched it for the first time a few months ago, but it's not the best thing since sliced bread.

I always said that TFP is overrated. I'm not saying it's bad, it's just that I don't enjoyed it as much as TF Animated and Beast Wars. The cast in those two series were so colorful and fun, either the Autobots and the Decepticons. While I do love TFP it definitely could have been done better, some characters could have used more screen time or better development and the ways characters are made more comedic i find to be disappointing. Plenty of episodes were written in a way I found disappointing, I think that most episodes could have been better with more plot edits and I think the way the show ended was not in good faith. My main problem is the large cast of flat characters, they are almost cardboard cut outs and are very lack luster. Its hard to know the personality of most characters when they feel so flat. The best well writen character I can think of is Arcee, solely for her emotional termoial she goes through with her ex-partner tailgate. The show is good sure, but it could have been great.

I feel that since Beast Wars, certain transformers shows have introduced concepts/ or themes that have helped the franchise grow all the way up to TFP. *Beast Wars introduced transforming animals and a detailed explanation of a spark. * The Unicron trilogy, mainly Armada and Cybertron, introduced the Minicons and colonized worlds by Cybertron. * The Transformers film(2007) introduced the Allspark. * TFA gave us a glimpse of Cybetronian life after the war and how certain problems don't immediately disappear, but can fester and lead to new ones. * TFP gave us the 13 primes and a nuanced origin of the Great War as well as showing the darker aspects of War in general. Overall I enjoyed your review on Prime. Even though I still love the show despite its flaws, you were spot on about those flaws and how it affected the show. Because along with the production Hell it went through behind the scenes, I felt sometimes the Aligned continuity was all over the place. Also an interesting note in regards to Optimus in this show where it had him showing a bit more emotion. In the episode Stronger, Faster during the argument between ratchet and the Autobots, Ratchet was originally supposed to bring up Elita-1( who I think died in the war) during the argument and blamed Optimus for it, which would've caused Optimus to punch him, but the story editor didn't want Optimus to lose his cool during the scene. Still I think TFP is one of the best transformers shows to come out, but its by no means THY best in my opinion.

Regarding Megatron killing Dreadwing to save Starscream, I think a logical explanation would be that it is precisely because of Starscream’s cunning and scheming nature. Despite his disloyalties, Starscream can come up with decent plans and tricks that would be more efficient and convenient for the Decepticons, assuming these plans are allowed to succeed. For Megatron, Dreadwing’s strong sense of honour wouldn’t get him anywhere, and might even allow the opportunity of winning the war to slip away (eg. Dreadwing had a chance of defeating Optimus in that one episode, but didn’t continue the fight because of honour. Then there’s this incident in the cave, where he honoured his word in exchange for an exhausted Megatron held at gunpoint.) However, this same logic if applied to ‘Rock Bottom’ might be far-fetched.

Only so well remembered because it's many peoples first transformers show, and because it pretended to be the "Dark and mature" transformers show.

I personally love TFP, It was the first Transformers series I really got into( I saw animated first, but I hardly watched much of it as a kid) and it was and still is my favorite Transformers show. The animation and designs where great, it had a solid soundtrack, amazing voice performances and captivating dialogue, and I liked the overall darker and more serious tone. I know it's not perfect, and while I do think they could have done more with it and executed some things better, considering how much development hell and behind the scene issues it went through, it's a miracle the show is still at the very least decent. People can love their Animated and Beast wars, but for me, Prime (alongside the Cybertron video games) is peak Transformers.

While I think a few of your points were more so nitpicks, I definitely agree with you on a lot of this. Prime had a lot of potential and a lot of it got wasted. Another thing I dislike about the show is how they tried to make it seem high stakes by killing off Cliffjumper (RIP the poor guy), but then another autobot never dies. I think it’s very cheap of Prime to do that. I have a few other issues with the show that you didn’t address, but I’m still a fan of Prime through and through. I love it and animated equally for completely different reasons

The reason why Megatron saves Starscream in that cave episode is because Starscream came back. Megatron of course didn't know it was for selfish reasons. And when Starscream gives Megatron the Omega keys he lets him back in because he went into his head and saw that Starscream is genuine in his want to serve Megatron this time. Starscream repays this act of mercy by being loyal the rest of the series.

TFP Megatron had resources other versions of Megs would KILL for. A working groundbridge, the most loyal version of Soundwave, a Spaceship, a whole ass Army, and established supply chains with mining infrastructure. Then TFP Megatron squandered it ALL on Dark Energon. Animated Megatron with those resources would have won within just 2 episodes. TFP Megs just didnt do anything. TFP Megatron feels like a larper, a pretender. To quote TFA Megatron, he's nothing but a 'cheap copy'.

Great video. I plan on doing a retrospective of the whole series later this year to celebrate the 10th anniversary of when it ended. I personally enjoy TF: Prime both when I watched it back in the day and now. And while they don’t bother me for the most part, I have noticed some of the storytelling flaws, especially ones that were caused by behind the scenes drama. In fact, I even did a whole video on my channel dedicated to Dreadwing and how his character arc was massively undercut. Prime certainly has issues, it is strange how to me the Decepticons are more interesting than the Autobots. They are a bit like a dysfunctional family in a way. The designs of the Transformers are definitely top notch.

Hot take but beast wars is the best transformers show. Yes the animation is dated but that’s because they made characters look like the toys it’s just that someone convinced them to change the designs since the toys look goofy and that destroyed the budget and making the world kinda plain. If they remake it with better cgi it would be a masterpiece.

45:19 missed chance to say 'more then meets the eye' Anyhow, I do like Tranformers Prime... Completely right about Megatron though. Knock-Out and Starscream work together to keep him out of power, at the cost of his own health, monumentally fuck up multiple times, and get off scot free. Airachnid tries to assume power over the Decepticon Armada once when Megatron has seemingly lost his mind, and gets sent to be exacuted... Which backfires horribly for Breakdown. Dreadwing has the most understandable reason to want to kill Starscream. Pushing aside the fact he's a traitor he also killed his brother, re-animated his corpse, and got him killed again. And for that, gets shot dead. This is like Benson firing Skips and Muscles man for one fuck up while still employing Mordecai and Rigby for... The plot I guess. Though if I will say: The writing isn't completly to blame for some characters getting quickly exacuted. Atleast as far as I know, the voice actors for these characters were getting to expensive and so they needed to cut the budget a bit, hence there aprupt exacution's from the franchise

Said every general Transformers fan ever. It's overglorification like this that leads to the status of "overrated." Like the video points out, this show is riddled with issues. You know what other show is riddled with production issues? Energon. I like both Energon and Prime, but I wouldn't call either peak. If it's your favorite then that is absolutely fine, but this glazing for TFP is why I have a hard time enjoying the Aligned Continuity aside from Rescue Bots and RID 2015. I love the Unicron Trilogy to death, but GOOD LORD is it anything but perfect. There's plenty of things from the UT that bother me to no end, much like Animated and Beast Wars. Those are shows I love as well. Anyway, sorry for the long post but I had to get this off my chest.

Okay I dislike being this guy but your whole Megatron point is off 1. I will say Megatron saving Starscream was always odd to me. But you can chop that up to he liked hearing Scream beg for Mercy. But thats not really a fact 2. Megeatron didnt just let Scream come back with open arms he tested him by going through all of Screams memeories to see if he is loyal or Megatron was going to kill him. Your leaving out context of how Megatron even let Scream come back. Which he ulitnatly decided to as Megas wanted to just focus on the Autobots and not dealing with muiltple threats at once. You also brush over the fact Dredwing was killed for not lessoning to Megatron. 3. He did have a wider goal. You credit Animatied Megas for building a space bridge the whole last seaon when TFP Megas did the same thing. Season 1 he collects tons of Dark energon to throw into the space bridge to curropt all of Cybertron into an undead army. Season 2: he gets that parts to rebuild the Space Brigde and collect the Omega Keys. To use the Well of All Sparks to not only terraoform Cybertron but also Earth making a massvie fortess and laucnhes and full front attack almost destroying the Autobots. Season 3: The Predacon amry was more Shock wave than Megatron. Who changed his plan to rebuild the Well to try again. Thats excluding his other plans with in the seasons themselves like turning his arm into Sential Primes arm to create the Dark Saber to counter the Star Saber. Or destorying the Predacon plan when he saw its fall out. You just broke it down it the most miniume way possible. Making this seem like the most bare bones character of Megatron when he isnt. He isnt the most layered versison either but theres meat on there

Don't worry about being "that guy", I understand there's a lot of debated points and critiques are entirely valid. I'll address your points though. 1. He may have liked hearing Starscream begging for his life, but in Rock Bottom he established that he was done with him, and tired of hearing him do so, particularly fed up after he tried to hide resurrecting Skyquake. To have the episode begin with Megatron taking him to be executed, to "Okay I'll give you one more chance" has a bit of a disconnect, especially factoring in every bad thing Starscream did to him up til that point. 2. Yes, a lot was cut out to time, and admittedly that is a regret of mine with this video. Clocking in with nearly 50 minutes of content, I had to be a bit picky and choosy with scenes to focus on, so you're right, I did gloss over why Megatron accepted him. The reason for doing so, is although there was an episode dedicated to it, to me that particular episode seemed more like a glorified clipshow to me (the second clipshow of the season as well), and personally I didn't feel it added anything new. But I understand how it can be seen as leaving that out. 3. The difference between Animated Megatron and Prime Megatron is Animated Megatron's goals last the whole season, Prime Megs do not, especially in the examples you provided. The "dark energon through the space bridge" plot is only for the opening 5 parter, however immediately after that Megatron seemingly abandons the Dark Energon plot until the finale. He also does not learn about the Omega Keys until late into season 2, completely unaware of their existence. I would compare Prime Megatron to a dog chasing cars, he just kept chasing various plans without any wider goal outside of the goal to conquer Cybertron. It's far more akin to G1 Megatron with the plan-of-the-week, as opposed to a more nuanced take. This extends to the Predacons as well, although it was Shockwave's introduction, Megatron approves the plan for just another attempt to try something in the hopes that it might work, rather than a proper narrative flow.
