House is wrong here, it's more than impulse. Every mildly decent person would feel an impulse to help, but no one else was willing to jump down there to try to help pull that woman out. Getting past that combination of bystander apathy and self-preservation needs more than just a blind impulse. It's true that it makes him no better a person than he was before that, but that just means who he was was already someone willing to risk his life for a perfect stranger.
@dylanwight57646 жыл бұрын
A paramedic once told me nearly the same thing after noting I was the first -- and only -- responder to a violent street mugging. Nobody else tried to stop the bastard (he fled; no idea what happened to him) and I got a deep laceration across my forearm for my efforts. But that was the worst of it. Nobody lost anything more than their dignity that night. More importantly to me, that paramedic inspired me to pursue a career in medicine. I'd initially considered becoming a paramedic myself, but eventually I settled on rural veterinary training.
@enochlo91566 жыл бұрын
An impulse is an animal's instinct, a sub-conscious that overrides a person's usual thought process and makes him impulsive, or you could say "beastly". The thing is, this natural instinct comes with the mind's judgment of one's physical capabilities, if you know you're strong then you have a tendency to be more heroic than others. This person has not come face to face with near-death experiences before thus resulting in blind confidence, or that he has come face to face with one and managed to get lucky thus resulting in blind confidence as well. Therefore, he is no hero, just a person who sub-consciously believes he has the ability to overcome large difficulties, and thus is more irrational and impulsive than other bystanders. You and I, as normal rational human beings, are fully aware of our incapabilities, that is why you won't risk your life because you know that the possibility of dying is larger than succeeding in a rescue. At least, your body knows. This man is simply impulsive, had he actually failed or experienced something similar before, his body's impulse would refrain him from doing it. In conclusion, he is inexperienced and has poor self-evaluation, which is the common cause for most civilian heroism, usually resulting in death. That said, "hero" is a title given by those saved so I wouldn't say that he is no hero, but I would say he isn't innately heroic or actually strong enough to be one. This is a fool's courage.
@dylanwight57646 жыл бұрын
@@enochlo9156 You're forgetting that self preservation is also an impulse. I think House was criticizing the concept of heroism altogether, rather than criticizing the man's actions. I can only speak from experience, and that is experience as a rural veterinarian. It takes more than simple courage to overcome the impulse of self preservation. So yes, the man acted heroically, but heroism itself is stupid.
@tieflingcorpse98176 жыл бұрын
I think he was more critiquing the idea of being heroic to get famous
@enochlo91566 жыл бұрын
@@dylanwight5764 first of all, i have never said that self preservation is not an impulse. As I have indicated, the clear understanding of the extent of one's physical capabilities influences one's impulsive behaviour. Ur missing the point, the point is that this man has not properly assessed himself, leading himself to believe that he can be a hero without dying. Self preservation mechanisms only activate when ur sub-conscious and ur body screams "NO" knowing u will die, and in this case his did not trigger because he doesn't know he's weak. There is nothing more to 'take' to overcome this impulse, his impulsive self preservation mechanism simply did not trigger. U claim to be a rural veterinarian, then u should clearly understand the importance of training. It makes u stronger and ur body acknowledges it, causing the impulsive self-preservation mechanisms to trigger on much extreme terms. Since ur physical capabilities exceed that of a normal "dude". obviously the conditions for triggering it are much harsher, for example if u know u can jump off a two-storey building knowing ur legs wont break, then u'll probably jump to save urself. Normal people know that they will probably die, therefore their mechanism is activated to prevent themselve from doing anything stupid. Your mechanism will only stop u from jumping if the building is three levels high or more. It doesn't take more than courage to overcome it, in fact it doesn't take anything at all, because their's simply did not trigger at all. They are still rational and capable of logical decision making because it is not impulse. You notice when the man tried to pull back and leave the rails, panicking and yelling for help? It's because that is when his mechanism triggered, only a bit too late.

I don't understand House's reasons for having an issue with him being a hero. Risking your life to save someone is heroic in the traditional sense. He is certainly a hero to the person he saved. It being an impulse to save someone doesn't make it less impressive. If I was going to criticize him it would be for risking his life to save the life of someone hes not related to. He already made a commitment to his family. If he dies protecting a stranger, then it is essentially the same as betraying his own family that relies on him. You can be a hero, and still be a horrible parent or spouse.
@depressedpacito70242 жыл бұрын
Personally I always see it as House had performed life altering cures and miracle solutions to save lifes or even to diagnose the proper treatment, yet he's treated like a madman by those he's closest with. He's a tragic character where his depression causes a very apathetic view, to distract himself from his work he takes the most complicated jobs so he can focus on diagnostics and solving puzzles with the human body. He knows what can and cannot kill patients so he uses his team as an advisory of medical students with talent. Once they have learned enough he fires them and he hires new people. We see it often and every season. And despite all his efforts with his team, it's still not enough for anyones approval, meanwhile the hospital and Cuddy reap the rewards that house is basically making them.

House's read on him wasn't entirely wrong, though. He can be a "hero" to his loser band buddies. He can be a "hero" to a complete and total stranger (and a subway station full of onlookers). But he can't even bring himself to be a hero to his daughter and her mother. House saw him getting a big head. We've seen it in all sorts of people for all sorts of reasons, including non-ego-driven ones: they get this sudden urge to get their life together and then the MOMENT they might have to be held to it, they bail out. So, maybe he's a "hero" in a more literal, almost comic-book sense (thus House's Batman read), sure. But using the actual term is dangerous to use around chronic underachievers like this guy. He could be a hero, I guess. But he's not a great guy.

House didn't aruge that he was a hero to the woman he saved, he argued against masses worshipping the guy. Doing one heroic thing does NOT make him a hero in general (yes, to that woman of course). Being a hero means chosing to do a difficult thing AGAIN AND AGAIN. That was a one-time thing, commendanle and brave of course, but doesn't make him a different person. I also think the guy's wife expressed her frustration that he jumped on the track in front of their daughter which could have traumatized her (thus prioritizing a stranger over her).

Everyone’s talking about whether or not he’s a hero but I’m here thinking over how his super important band mates - with whom he spends 3 weeks as opposed to 2 days with his family - are nowhere to be seen throughout the episode. Says a lot, really.

I once saved my girlfriend from getting hit by a train. We were on a bridge portion of a railroad track to cross a creek. We stopped to toss a couple rocks in the water from the bridge as stupid teens do. We didn’t notice the train approaching until it was too late to get off the bridge. She didn’t know that one side of the bridge was far enough away from the track to be safe from the train, I grabbed her at the last minute and she said she felt the train on the tip of her finger. I’m no hero, I was the one who put her in danger by showing her that bridge.

It was actually to show how House refuses to think of himself as a hero, that's why he refused to accept Shaggy at 0.1% of his full power was a hero there despite being the single one person to do anything to save the girl from among a hundred bystanders.

Can't imagine how terrifying that must have been for the train driver. If the train hit Mathew Lillard, it would have nearly torn the train in half, likely thrown it up on the platform causing massive numbers of casualties both on board and those on the platform, would have looked a lot like that scene in The Knowing. Even if he dialed his power down as low as he possibly could, a heavy-rail subway train would be no match for him. On a more serious note, why are they not thinking more about the lady he jumped down to rescue, who was also having a seizure? She has seizures, then guy who threw himself on top of her starts to have them afterward, I'd think that's a correlation worth investigating.
@miraa.24952 жыл бұрын
There is a type of illness where seizures can be passed from physical contact I've forgotten what it's called but it's a virus i think or bacteria and basicalkynone of the symptoms of the disease is seizures
@quillmaurer65632 жыл бұрын
@@miraa.2495 Yeah, I was thinking something along those lines - thus why they should have looked at the other victim as well rather than treated them as isolated cases.

@quillmaurer65632 жыл бұрын
@@kierrarobertson4677 Ah, things not shown in this clip, good info. Even so, I'd still think the correlation is worth investigating - even if she had Epilepsy, maybe that wasn't the cause of this seizure, or there was an outside factor that triggered it for her and also did so for Matthew Lillard. Especially as weird as the final explanations usually are in House episodes.

He lay down on top of the woman, which looks like he's using his body to protect her. However, unless he was absolutely certain that there was enough room, it would have been safer to lie down in the middle of a different part of the track, so his back wouldn't have been sticking up as high.
