@@sws212 Right he did, because he believed he deserved it. On some level yes, but if it were me in his shoes. "Gracie, its your father. I know i wasn't there for you, and i'm so sorry. I know this means little, but I needed to say it. I love you." Is probably what I would of said. On the outside might mean little, especially if Gracie calls up her mom and tells her what happens. Maybe some harsh words come from mother, and the daughter semi-sorta agrees with them. However, now imagine both Mom and daughter learn that he passed away. A father's last words on this earth of meaning were to tell his daughter that he loved her. Still might not really hit her, but may years down the road, it hits Gracie. My father was thinking of me at the end. that I feel is a bit of closure. Both my mother and father passed away suddenly at different times. I never got say good bye, won't get to hear their voices again, but in my memories. I try to tell her, and show her that I love her often. So that incase, the same happens to me, and I leave her suddenly. That she will always have those memories. Took time to get over the pain, and there are times and days I still get down.. But then a memory comes to me, or someone says something that sparks a memory. And I smile again. I think for the character Gracie, in time that lil message might bring just a shred of that to her. I know i'm going on, but my point is. I think the more selfish thing would be to leave things unsaid, and that the more selfless thing, though it may not seem like it at first, is to for him to face his own pain, and shame, and to get those words off his chest. Because like I said, may not today, and maybe not tomorrow, but maybe someday they will bring closure.

That very last scene, where House hands him back the phone & insists that he tell his daughter "what he needs to say," reminds me that however callous & indifferent he pretends to be 99% of the time, there's truly some remote inner place within him that does genuinely care about people. I think he felt safe allowing this side of him to show for the briefest of moments because the man was about to die, & so the situation morphed into one of those vanishingly rare moments where he felt he could make himself ever-so-slightly vulnerable. He's not wrong, but, when you consider the larger context, he's also not right. House is, for all his bluster, deeply fearful. He's terrified of love, because losing it hurts. House always comes across as not caring but you can tell by his eyes and head position when something gets to him. He cares very much but wont admit it. An amazing actor.

As a historian who spends most of her time with people who've died hundreds of years ago...yes, everyone I know well is very very dead.

You spend time with the interpretations, not with the real deal.

@@RandalfElVikingo We are all interpreting other peoples based on what we see and hear about their words and actions. Having a physical encounter with somebody else's meat vehicle can give you clues to who they are... but so can reading their life story, or their journal, or the letters they wrote to their friends and family, or looking at the clothes they wore, or recreating their daily routine.

“I’m going to be dead in a few hours. Your secrets couldn’t be safer... unless you’re keeping them from yourself.” Reminds me of my friend years ago who was dying from late stage cancer. I sat with him and he said something very similar, he knew i had things i'll never say again. Held me hand and told me to just say whatever i wanted to get off my chest because he wouldn't exactly be blagging it. When I finished, he patted my hand. I left the room to gather myself. Minute or so later, he died.

im surprised no one here knew that this single episode was actually directed by house himself (i mean the actor hugh laurie) and this is one of the saddest episodes ever in the series. it is so sad that i actually refused to watch it again everytime i rewatched the house series.

House went from insulting this person for his disease to being estranged by his own daughter to feeling guilty about not taking his case. House is a really caring person in my opinion and not the sad man that he portrays.

I would really love to see an indie short film of the daughter receiving this call then attending her fathers funeral. There are so many “B stories” that can intensify moments like these...
@user-cl9zf9wj9i2 жыл бұрын
Had a writing prompt like this way back; the story was something about a school bus driving off into a River? And some lawyer passing through was stuck in the town helping w/ the investigation Anyway, he’s got a daughter and she called while he was in a car wash, with or something. The “something” was our prompt. Turned it into a story about a junkie (requiem for a dream was a “recent” film) who sells plasma/blood to get $ (other than calling he father for cash) and gets AIDS along the way. The phone call was the bombshell “I’m gonna die soon” Just another “B story” out in the æther

The scene toward the end imo ends the debate if house is a psychopath. He didnt stand to gain anything from having the dad call the daughter to say goodbye, that proves he isn't a psychopath.
