Original style door panels for my 86 from LMR are now about $1K. I paid a local upholsterer (my originals had hole-sawed speaker holes from a previous owner) for custom Alcantara touches so I'm in the ballpark. But if you're staying original--and the vinyl isn't trashed--rebuilding is the way to go.

Great video! I’ve had everything to rebuild the panels on my ‘91 LX for several months but have been putting it off. I was hesitant due to not looking forward to figuring out how the boards attached to the metal top. I certainly didn’t want to ruin mine and have to cough up that $500+ bucks for replacements. Thanks for taking the plunge and providing us all the video.

Looks great I did mine on my 90. I went a little overboard and took out my window guide rods and polished them so the windows went up and down smooth. I also added new moisture barrier and sound deadener. It made a huge difference so I know how you feel. Great video thanks for all the content.
@HOUSEOFDULA6 жыл бұрын
Thats not overboard, that actually more proper lol. My rails need polished and new guides. A vapor barrier I think on a vert and t-top is almost essential and I didnt even mention it. Being that the car is garaged helps...But most would want that as well as the sound deadener installed too.

That cutting disc on a dremel is the trick to cutting stainless braided fuel line. Wrap the fuel line tight with electrical tape , cut through it , Peel tape carefully and you have a very nice tight cut with no pieces to fight with when installing into whatever fitting your using.

Great video! Thanks for toiling through the anatomy of a door panel. I've got the LMR boards to restore my '85 panels (identical to yours). One thing I will probably add to the project is to apply marine epoxy around all the clip holes and switch openings. That press board stuff is weak and brittle with time. I figure it's a good idea to shore up those edges, since everything snaps in or holds onto them.

Naw in all seriousness you did a bang up job dude, like you said it was a tedious time consuming job but will bring the old girl closer to original condition. I purchased a brand new of the lot 86 mustang Lx notchback charcoal grey in colour, identical interior as yours and the only trouble I ever had was the cruise control stopped working but was a ten dollar fix and the paint on the engine bonnet was peeling of. Ford motor company went good for it after owning the car for five years, sort of wish I hadn't sold it after watching you bring this car back to where it should be. Have fun !

I probably should have done this to my panels when I replaced the window guides last winter. You're right, the particle board gets trashed from Ttop water leaks. Being I'm going to need to get back in there to do some glass adjustments...after replacing those SOB door pins,.I may elect to do this to mine. I believe the fabric side will be a little different on the 87-88 Ttops, but overall, I think the process will be the same with the metal and wood. I seen those years stamped on the back of mine too...12-3-86. was like looking at a time capsule. Thanks for posting this, great work!

Hey seems like you had some project. It seems possible to use a set of manual door panels if you just make the hole bigger where the crank would be and put the switch in. Is that true?
@MrAudio776 жыл бұрын
Also worth a shot, but if you had put a rivet in from the metal side, through the backer, and into a washer, it would have held without breaking thru the cardboard backer.

Awesome job... I have an 89 and I'm going to try and salvage my panels... they are really only bad around the speakers, and I'm hoping the speaker grill will hold it together. One question: Did you have any issue with the rivets thru the felt touching the window glass? I'm sure they stick out more than the factory staples.
