Hi Fern! Surprisingly I learned that my micans does better in lower light. I used to have in under a grow light and the leaves were coming out small and red in colour. Since I moved it into a north facing situation, I’m finally starting to get the dark, beautiful micans leaves and it’s starting to trail!
@amandaw31413 жыл бұрын
Really? I'm moving mine now.. had it in a filtered west window. It was growing like crazy but very red leaves. Was missing the green ones on the top side.. thanks!

This!!! I have my micans 6ft back from a Northwest window and its growing amazing! Big, gorgeous leaves that are such a deep, dark green. The undersides are such a beautiful red color and in the evening, in lower light the tops of the leaves actually look black! I had been wanting a micans for years but was always too nervous to get one cuz I heard they can be finicky, but mine has been doing fantastic!

I love that this is the 'smaller' collection because wow that is still a TON of plants. New to the indoor plant hobby and have been loving your videos. I think you have the right idea about not having duplicates and just having a more curated collection of only the plants that 'spark joy'. Makes more sense than having more plants for no reason other than to have them and feeling so so about them. Can't wait to see more videos.

I've had my red veined maranta for about a year and a half now and I have noticed that the leaves seem to darken over time. I wondered the same thing when I got it and assumed it needed lower light to get that color, but the leaves still came out lighter, so I just left it in the same place and eventually the leaves did get darker. But it does take a while after they come out to do that🤷

I have a giant calathea warscewiczii and grab everyone’s sad ones off my local plant groups. If you have space in your plant cabinet, pop it in there. It will take off in that high humidity. All the sad ones I’ve picked up live in my prop boxes until they have multiple leaves and growth points. Once larger they move out of the boxes. They do a lot better living outside of my prop boxes when they are a bigger plant.

As to your Red Maranta, I’ve read they’re darker in less light? I was finding more light leaves on mine as well and so I moved her into a darker spot, not enough time has passed to tell though 🤞🏻 And for sure less light for Micans, you’ll get that dark, rich foliage in lower light 👌🏻 Your compacta has come SO FAR! I was playing your videos in the background the other day and that video where you repotted and potted up pieces together when it was just a baby came on. The spoons you used made me laugh but I had to stop and take notice how much it’s grown in that time! 👏🏻❤️

Over an hour tour?!?! you just made my day Fern, TY! As for the micans, I have mine on a plant shelf thats kinda in the corner in between an east facing and north facing window. It's pulled back about a meter or so from the east facing window and maybe a 1/2 meter from the north facing window. So it gets maybe 1-2 hours direct morning sun otherwise med/bright indirect light and its growing like a weed. I was actually very surprised to see you have it in a south facing window

I always love your plant tours and seeing all the progress. Some thoughts on your questions. Red maranta: like the gloriosum and other velvety plants, I find they are darker with less light. Variegated SoH, I find mine a thirsty little thing. I have mine in a terracotta pot and find I need to water every 3 day in a south facing window. Micans, I too struggled and mine would grow then I'd lose a bunch of leaves, lather rinse repeat. I suggest you move it away from a south window because mine looked that bleached out before it went on a shedding frenzy. You can't let them dry out as much. another philos but I do think it gets rot very easily. I finally gave up on a big basket so I bought an 8" for $50 recently lol. I can't wait to see your video on your melano. I just don't know how to 'read' the plant yet, whether the leave should be soft like a mican or more firm like a giags. My largest leaf is about 2.5 inches so still very much a baby plant. Your brasil leaves are massive and I was so happy to see a growth point on your Thai knowing it was such a struggle for you.

@branchingout84333 жыл бұрын
When I shipped my succulents during a move, all of my succulents ended up rotting. But mine was probably because they were in shipment for a week in a box - with my mistake, tropical plants. The moisture was too much for them I think. They are more sensitive than I realized. You have all of my dream plants, that large silversword (I had to sell my large one and two weeks ago bought a baby one), the Florida beauty, the painted lady and the Standleyana okay pretty much your whole collection. I had to start over with my collection and I only have about 20 plants (apposed to 70 + props) and they are all baby plants. I feel so impatient waiting for them to grow. But I am glad my mindset on plant collecting has changed into appreciating what I have more and instead I continue to journal about plants which helps with the consumerism inclination I have. Loved the long video. Gave me motivation to clean my kitchen & loving room. Lastly, how often have you tried growing from seed? Ever grow cacti or succulent seeds? I know you've got a bunch of people to respond to so I'm done. Have a wonderful day!
@wildfern3 жыл бұрын
Awe starting over is hard, I find myself missing my larger trailing plants, but I know with some patience my collection will get there again :) I have grown cactus from seed once, it went well but you need a lot of patience as it can be a couple of years before they are small plants that can be potted up. Still very fun to do. Thanks so much for watching + commenting!

Prayer plant leaves mature over time ❤️. Yours look absolutely amazing! Mine is in very very bright light also, one of my brightest windows. I know a lot of people say they don’t like a lot of light, but mine LOVE bright bright light. Where the suns rays shine a little throughout the day. All of my foliage is super dark, so I would just give it more light, and more time to mature. ❤️ Love you girl.

Hi Fern. I came across your channel a couple months ago and I am obsessed with your videos! Currently in the process of building my own Ikea Greenhouse cabinet after I saw your video. I bought two philodendron Micans a couple months back and have one right beside my big north facing window and the other one pulled back about 9 feet from the same large north facing window and they are both loving life! The one that is right beside the window definitely has more growth but they are both growing like crazy!

Loved the tour! For the Red Maranta dark leaves issue I'd guess that is a mix of light and maturity. Old leaves will probably go darker with time, but also if they're in the bottom they will be receiving less light. I know because my Maranta lives really far from the window and has almost only darker leaves,with the new ones being slightly brighter. =)

For micans' dark foliage, I recommend an east window. And from my experience, it only pushes out big leaves once it's trailing! So if you'll give it a plank and attach it should create aerial roots that will attach themselves...

Micans can take some direct sun if acclimated, so it’s probably not getting to much light, they actually have this beautiful red tinge to them when they do. With the white ghost I actually had really good luck when I had mine in coco choir chunks and some really chunky soil. I would maybe take one of those little arms and try to get some insurance by propagating. Mine live outside and I know our climates are opposite but on hot nice days if you can stick it outside I would , get some extra sun

Oh yeah, about the Micans. I’ve found that they really don’t like a lot of light. Kaitlyn Louise said that she keeps her in a pretty dark room, and I’ve discovered mine does well in medium light. I would suggest moving it farther away from the southern window.
