I'd say the hostages looking like kids is just a style choice, but that wouldn't explain the man at the end of the levels looking more like an adult than them. Though, it is darkly hilarious that, despite them looking like children, it's possible to just kill the hostages with almost no consequences in the game. I knew so little about Hovertank before watching this video that I had no idea that was even an option (though I feel like I couldn't do that if I actually played this. I'd feel too guilty, even if they are just pixels).

Nostalgia Nerd made a video about this! TL:DW: People at Id knew it was better to aim with the mouse since Wolfenstein, but it took until Quake 2 was in development, and player Dannis Thresh used WASD with mouse-look, that the scheme became popular enough that it was made the default for Quake 2 when it was released. Later Half-Life 1 came out with it as default too and sealed the deal!

@@Orbzy-vt8bu Interesting! I never played Quake multiplayer so I didn't know. For me it was Half-life that got me used to WASD, and E replaced space bar as the use key (we've come a long way, lol).

I liked the game, lots of what I said was for comedic effect. I know the game was revolutionary for the time, I mention that in passing in the video. I wasn’t saying that to criticize the game, other than criticizing the level design. And even with DOS being objectively old, my referring to dinosaurs was a joke that I didn’t even come up with, like how old TV’s are called dinosaurs boxes.

Oh, man! This sure bring memories! Not sure if it was 2012 or 2013, but whatever, that year I gave a try to so many old games including Catacomb 3D and of course, Hovertank 3D. From the beginning, I was aware it was quite rudimentary so I knew I couldn't judge the game the same way as DOOM (or any other + advanced FPS) The hostages sound always made me laugh, and even though it was frustrating thing to die, it was compensated a bit by the OH, SHI....!!!! *explosion* routine That thing is so iconic on its own Not a fan of the "faster than lightning" format for speaking, but anyway, it was a cool video (I read your pinned comment, the ultra-fast way of speaking is related to your condition? I ask as means to understand a bit more about the matter)

Faster talking / irregular speaking patterns can be a part of autism so that would probably be why. I didn’t even really consider what I was saying to be fast until you mentioned it and yeah- that is quite quick lol.

Personally, I tend to struggle to speak fairly faster, given whenever I record something I speak quite slowly (happens to me both in my native language and in English as well) Anyway, it is incredible how two different people (as well as their respective brains) work in such different ways!!! XD

RAGE before RAGE, although it's more of a tank simulator than an actual shooter, if anything. Believe it or not, its source code was open-sourced in 2014, but remains under no clear legal status due to no official re-release following. There are a few mods and even a source port too.

I knew about the mods (and was going to cover one at a later date) but I was unaware of the source-ports! thanks for letting me know about that, makes me wanna go back and play through the game start to finish but this time with decent controls.

does the source port not control like you're trying to move control a truck with a guitar and is the FOV not zoomed in to the point that it looks as if you are using binoculars?

4:50 Sounds about right. I mean, the wonderfully trashy voice lines in Wolf3D were the result of John Romero and Tom Hall dicking around with Bobby Prince's sound equipment, when he came to down to the id office.

Ah yes how could I forget, I think my memory of the Wolfenstein voice lines got overridden by the Doom II versions. Though to be fair the inflection in which they say “mein laben” still gives me a chuckle

You're going to get haters no matter what you do, and they're going to be the ones that leave comments 9 times out of 10 instead of the people who liked the video. So you might as well just mentally translate their comments to "HUMP-YO-MOOOM" and press either 3 or 5 depending on how close the sound is

Yes, "Dangerous Dave in Copyright Infringement" a demo consisting of one level from Super Mario Bros 3 but using Dangerous Dave instead of Mario in the same engine they would use to make Commander Keen.
