Taylor Swift is arguably the biggest artist of my generation. Throughout her decades long career, she’s won Grammy's, shattered numerous records, and has become one of the bestselling artists of all time. The recent release of her folk album "Folklore" started to get me thinking about how her songs have always been incredibly detailed and create a sense of imagery that no other artist could emulate. With that being said, it can be hard to determine which album is considered to be her magnum opus, since if we are being honest, all of her body of works are incredibility well done. However, if I were to pick an album that changed the trajectory of her career the most, I would give it her 2014 record, “1989”. Not only did this album mark a change in sound for Taylor, but it also allowed her take control of her public image. In this video, we are going to be discussing the making 1989 album as well as understanding how it created the pop titan we know of today.

The fact that she is still pulling huge albums sales even she debuted since 2006 is really spectacular. Other artist that debuted in 2000s like Gaga and Katy cant pull records like her anymore. And we dont talk enough about her versatility. She started from county to pop to alt now and I can see her doing rock with her future albums. Taylor always reinvents herself and her fans would accept that transition a 100%. She established a point in her career in which she can drop a surpise album without a pre-single and no promotion and still pull huge sales and streams Taylor's folklore broke Ariana's spotify record for the most streamed female album in its 24 hours. folklore is an alt album and still did that. Taylor would be in the music industry for a long long time and people will never get tired of her.

From a lot of the fan accounts and a lot of my fellow swifties it's just usually listed as people's least favorite for no particular reason other than it is her most lucrative and successful album. I do however see it as one her less personal albums so maybe that's where fans are coming from. I love Taylor. I've been listening to her from her debut upto evermore. I can even name a Taylor Swift song off of its first 2 seconds. Lmao. But I think reputation was her weakest album. The production wasn't that good and the lyrics are a bit undercooked. She always hinted in that album that she doesn't care about the drama when she clearly made about 3 songs on her drama with Kanye (which is not my favorite part, tbh). Though we can make the argument that most of the songs on reputation are love songs, there really aren't really a lot that stands out from any of her older love songs (probably with the only exception of Delicate).

@@jeomaykutecson3545 Bruv, there are SOOO many good lyrics in Rep. and it really grows on you over time. Some songs I think needed better production (namely, DWOHT). However, lyrics from songs like DWOHT, CIWYW, Dress, New Year’s Day, IDSB, and Getaway Car (to name a few) still hold the potent poetry she is known for and hit all the right feels. Plus: the message of Reputation isn’t “I don’t CARE about the drama,” it’s “I’m LEARNING how to not care.” Its an album of love and perseverance, and if there are three or four songs on the album that discuss her anger, so much the better. Don’t Blame me and I Did Something Bad are immaculate, TIWWCHNT is such a banger, and LWYMMD the ULTIMATE baddie mood.

5:23 not streaming, the album wasnt initially available on streaming services (because taylor was fighting spotify & apple music for their policies, she only agreed to give them 1989 after they applied her conditions and changed their policies). The 1.287 million sales first week were all pure album copies, with the majority being physical CDs, and the rest being digital downloads.
@Im_Julissa
@Im_Julissa 4 жыл бұрын
I agree. I felt she sold that many albums bc that was the only way for fans to hear it. In this method she took away fans ability to stream her music for free on those music platforms in order to get more albums sold. In this effort she kinda made sure she made good sales of 1989 not bc of the record/ album but due to changes in the music services which made a huge mark.

Julissa it’s 2020 and 1989 has been killing it on streaming. With less than 3 of streaming years, she’s the third most streamed female on the platform... insane. And swifties are still buying just as much albums copies, especially CDs. So even after she’s embraced streaming, shes still selling. I don’t think anything changed. Same thing would’ve happened if 1989 was available since it’s release.
@Im_Julissa
@Im_Julissa 4 жыл бұрын
Ahmad Diab I’m talking about the first weeks sales of 1989 not now. The contract between the music streaming companies helped her boost physical copy in sales when it first came out. But I think her working with target for promoting 1989 was a good move too and loved the commercial. I loved the album at the time but I don’t think it’s her best, currently. I think Reputation left a mark on me. It’s a different yet best side of Taylor that no one has expected. Plus, it totally degraded Kanye after what he did to her so her being very successful and happy in that era was the best. I love Taylor but I’m just saying her success isn’t always based on how good her work is but her smart, business tactics help her more in the long run.

One of my favorite aspects of Taylor Swift is her excellent song writing. I never paid much attention to her music before 1989, although I picked up that she was a strong writer through her early albums in country and RED had some singles that caught my ear sonically and her writing. Taylors voice really is clear through her song writing. Her singing is average but I respect her musicianship mucho.

Yeah, her singing is Ok, though it has undergone massive improvement since her teenage years, and her blossoming lower range (like, that Grammys performance...🙀) is truly lovely. Of course, she’ll probably never be a vocalist like Beyoncé, Ariana Grande, Mariah Carey, and the like, but she can sing on pitch and belt some good notes.

Taylor has 2 peak eras (which is very difficult to reach this century) #1 1989 - y'all prolly know that this is her biggest era and one of the biggest eras in history. 1989 has it all. streams, tour gross, album sales, chart longevity, #1 singles etc. 1989 is THAT bitch. #2 Fearless - people who aren't fans of taylor prolly doesn't know that before 1989, she already had a peak. swifties didn't thought that her crossover in pop genre will give her a bigger era than this. The 1989 Era (as fans call it) wouldn't be half of what it was if Blank Space didn't exist. That song was a highlight on the album, as well as a brilliant career move for TS. Not only is it an extremely well - written song, it really helped to demonstrate the songwriting versatility that a lot of people didn't know she was capable of. It takes IMMENSE self - confidence/awareness to be able to use your skill as a lyricist, for one song, to embody the false portrayal of yourself that's been drawn up by someone else for the masses to pick apart. And a lot of people still don't realize that. However, what made this song the full package was how successful it was. I personally view it as the first hint that she was growing out of the naive, airy, agreeable, good - girl persona that, while appearing genuine, still managed to garner backlash from critics. Blank Space sent, arguably, TS' most assertive message yet, and the media was taken aback by it. In her own words, in describing the song on the 1989 Tour, she smugly commented: "if you want to play this way, we can play this way." Six years later, Blank Space is still one of the best songs in her discography - lyrically, sonically, and commercially. It MADE 1989.

This is well-done! I love how you remained neutral and didn't resort to lowkey shading her like the other videos similar to this one (ehem, vox). Thank you for this! I agree that 1989 is really her most significant album. The success of this era was unparalleled. Put her at the top of the game alongside big names and now three albums later, no one can take that away from her. She's become an icon. However, that humongous success also brought upon her a maelstrom of hate which wasn't surprising in retrospect because like TS said herself, "people throw rocks at things that shine." Society likes to tear down anything that thrives. It took a huge hit on her mental and emotional health, her friendships, etc. But because the world works with balance, she lost but she also gained. What's important is that now, she's at a better place mentally, emotionally and physically. She's doing better than she ever was.

I have never lived through an album more popular than 1989. I remember 2 years during middle school where every month it seemed like Taylor had a new song that was playing everywhere starting with 22 and i knew you were trouble leading into 1989 singles. That album is stuck in my memory as the most popular album i’ve ever witnessed.

Another excellent video. I'd love to see your ranking of her albums. To answer your question I think the big 3 turning points in her career was the years between Red and Rep. She evolved and kept reinventing herself again and again with each record. I think Red established her as a writer, 1989 established her as a pop star and Rep established her as an icon. 1989 was still truly the bridge between all 3 of those things though.

It was soulless and pop-ey but I personally think the pop genre perfectly represents what she felt. Harry Styles fling with no deepness but it was fun and that's basically what pop is. And she felt like she was at the top of the world and everyone knew her but she had noone to come home to.. she didn't have her soul at that time so the entire thing represents what she felt but swifties aren't ready for this conversation yet.

1989 is a masterpiece. I’ve been a Taylor Swift fan since 2008, but never has an album impacted me like 1989. “This Love”, “You are in love”, “Clean”, and “Wildest Dreams” hit so different after a bad break up and deep depression I went through in 2014. Taylor is a lyrical genius. ❤️

To me, folklore was the biggest "jump" for Taylor because most of us had no idea we would hear another stripped down, acoustic guitar in her music ever again since 1989 came out. folklore also feels like a farewell or ending of some sort.

Taylor, as I've learned, has a clear-cut strategy, a pattern with her musicology and discography and that's what makes her legendary. She'll be absent for a while, and then come back with a banger album. And in those times she's absent, she's filling them diary pages with deeply personal and highly sensible imageries of lyrics complete with oddly funny rhyme game. Only her presence fades, but not the music she makes. She's definitely not putting her talent to waste....not for several more decades to follow.

Indeed, it is the 2010s equivslent to MJ's Thriller: Sonically cohesive, and wonderful that every song could have been a killer single. Imo Folklore is her magnum opus. But the impact of 1989 is such that will never be forgotten. The pinnacle of pop released EVER.
