In this lesson I want to show you how to begin improvising over a 12 bar blues by focusing on the minor pentatonic scale and emphasizing chord tones during a 12-bar blues progression. Targeting specific notes-the root (1), fourth (4), and fifth (5) of the scale-that correlate with the A, D, and E chords in a blues progression, he highlights the importance of playing notes that match the underlying chords to sound more melodic and intentional.
He provides a step-by-step approach, including locating the A, D, and E notes in pentatonic patterns, applying the concept in a quick-change 12-bar blues backing track, and using techniques like slides, bends, hammer-ons, and vibrato to enrich the sound. He suggests that mastering this in one position before moving across the fretboard and learning in different positions is key to improving.
You can download the video backing track used at the link below.

Great lesson! This issue I think all of us beginners have is we have zero idea what key we are in. I can hear the change... but is it a D, an A... an E? No idea. Your chord changing visual is great and I wish we could custom build it for every backing track we have ;)

Yes all the inputs are going into a Motu M4 using either Reaper or Studio One. I use both for different things. The backing track is playing on a Macbook with the audio going into the interface. Takes some trial and error to find out what will work. I do all the audio and video editing on PC :)
@Learningguitarnow
@Learningguitarnow Жыл бұрын
The Motu also has Loopback so you could play the track and record the computer audio into Reaper which I do sometimes as well.

@@Learningguitarnow great yes I'm finding that takes a bit of messing about to see what works thanks a lot for your explanation I'll look into the Motu M4 I have a Line 6 GX which is working well for guitar and mic - just getting the backing track where I casn play/pause and play again while not affecting the recording - thats the main issue I'm having..:) I'll need to try running the track through my interface and see if I can get that working - cheers..:)

I'd disagree with that there's a far easier way for beginners using the basic open A chord shape at the 2 fret and the pentatonic scale that surrounds it then just shift the whole chord and scale up to the 7 fret for D when improvising and then upto the 9 fret for the E . All 3 chords shapes are the same and the scale pattern is the same. Don't really have to think about the notes just where the chord and scale is. All of the notes in the chords are always under your first finger so finishing a lick is easy. Eventually you'll be able to change scale when the chords changes without thinking, I've been doing it this way for years and I don't know what notes are in the chords or scales .
