I don't hate it but it's highly overrated, like most Japanese cars from that era. The road versions aren't very reliable and the sport versions aren't that good performance-wise, honestly if it hadn't been for Audi and Lancia quitting the rally scene after Group B/S got cancelled I doubt Subaru would've been nearly as successful in rally.

No Lancia raced after group b from 1987- 1993. They won every year until 1992.

I should of bought one back in the early 2000s when I was in my early 20s, the STi is all but a performance classic now, like the Pontiac GTOs and such

Like many WRC cars, the Impreza simply aged past its competitiveness. In this case, the reasons are obvious. Even though new versions and platforms of the Impreza keep being released, they have all been compact class cars. The most successful manufacturers in the WRC, on the other hand, moved to subcompact cars as their base, which are both lighter and more nimble around the tighter corners. Moreover, the compact class cars have been slowly getting bigger and bigger over the years, and are actually closer to midsize/intermediate cars in terms of interior size. Without a car smaller than the Impreza to base their WRC car on, Subaru saw the writing on the wall and simply left the championship. (The 2008 recession was a good excuse to leave, also). Another reason that the Impreza couldn't compete as well anymore was its continued use of the boxer engine. While the engine is unique and has a lower center of gravity that typical inline-4s, it suffered from a major inherent disadvantage. Its shape meant that it could only be place in the engine bay in one manner (longitudinal). And because of its length and bulk, much of the engine (if not all of it) sat directly in front of front axle. Inline-4s, on the other hand, are typically mounted transversely so its bulk was wider than it was long. I4s could also be mounted behind the front axle. Physics-wise, an I4 mounted in this manner would be somewhat more agile than a boxer 4. As a result, until the past decade of improved WRXs and STis, none of the Imprezas had a reputation for being a sharp handling car. The same goes for most Audis, which also have their engines mounted in front of the front axle (also, all non-R8 Audis are naturally FWD cars). It's difficult to go against natural physics, but it is also possible to do your best with what you have. The current WRX and the continued improvements to the Porsche 911 are testament to that.
