2 stories of shelby i think should have been in here. #1 carroll was racing while chicken farming cause drivers didn't get paid back then so he was vaccinating his chickens one day and had forgotten he was supposed to race that day. his wife came out and was like "aren't you supposed to be at that race today" so he immediately jumped in his pickup still in his farming coveralls drove like a badass like 2hrs to the race and made it just in time to start. won that race! and got his picture taken still in his farming coveralls. #2 and i don't remember all the details so don't quote me but carroll had either asked to work for ferrari or asked for something for a racecar he was building like i said i don't remember exactly but basically enzo was a dick to carroll and he told enzo he would one day beat ferrari. i feel that's a big part of the story and first story is just awesome.

A chicken farmer will always me a chicken farmer, but Ferrari will always be a legend. It's best to listen to Lee Holmans interview about the GT40s to get the truth. He said that Carrol Shelby was a bully and a shyster who never paid his bills and Ford only used him to assemble some of the GT40s, to have a second source in case Holman Moody tripped along the way. Ford put HM on a million dollars a month retainer to do all their Nascar, Sports Car and Drag Race program. They had 800 people working there at one stage and were in effect the Ford racing department. All the design work on the GT40 was done in the UK and Ford took the Nascar FE 427 and detuned it to survive 24 hours of racing at LeMans. The 289s had to spin to 8500 to develop enough power to do 200mph and they broke. Using the 427 they could keep them to 7000 and run taller gears. All the refinement and final testing was Holman Moody and even today, they still have all the patterns and the few remaining original spares for the actual LeMans cars. They can build you a whole new LeMans GT40 from what they have in the warehouse. The price is $2m.
