It seems like this character was loosely based on the apostle Paul. Attacks Christians, kills them, imprisons them, tortures them, tries to get them to renounce their version of Judaism, etc.; then is literally shown the light, becomes a Christian himself, is avoided by the other Christians because most of them think he still wants to kill them, is eventually excepted, but still spends the rest of his life in trouble with the law and the powers that were.

Atton Rand’s story echos that of Paul the Apostle. Paul, in a similar vain to Atton, had started out as a Jewish Pharisee persecuting Christians only to experience an epiphany - a vision of Jesus - that changed his entire outlook on life. Afterwards, he became Christianity’s most prolific supporter, spreading the word to all the churches and beyond.

In Buddhism, Angulimala is a ruthless serial killer who collects the fingers of his victims on a necklace as trophies. He murders entire villages and is hunted by kings. At his darkest moment when he goes to kill his own mother, Buddha intervenes and uses his supernatural wisdom to show Angulimala the error of his ways. After a mind boggling waking nightmare, Angulimala declares he wants to be a monk to redeem himself no matter how many lifetimes it takes. He becomes one of Buddha’s pupils and closest companions

Atton's entire character arc to me not only reads as a shining example of redemption, but also a blueprint for what Lucasfilm could have done with characters such as Ben Solo in the Sequel Trilogy. Or, they could have done the exact opposite and have Ben fall further and further until he became worse than Atton was back when he was a Jedi killer and torturer. I like a good redemption story, but I love me a well written, pure evil, sociopathic villain too.

So if Atton was a Sith Lord, I guess most Jedi will show no hesitation to cut him down, right? But since he is a Sith's associate, they forgiven him easily. Why is this? Why do Jedi showed no mercy to the Sith but are willing to show compassion to those who willingly and voluntarily associated themselves with the Sith? Also, none of these problems will ever happened if the Jedi Order simply do not attached itself to the Republic but merely maintaining good relations with it while secretly fighting against slavery on their own. By playing politics on Coruscant, the Jedi Order became corrupted in the end.

Atton was Force-Sensitive and it showed in his talents and skills, but he was not corrupted by the Darkside like so many Sith - and the Dark-Jedi he broke - because he was not aware of its pull on him, even as he acted in kind with those who were. He did what he did for reasons, and continued for those reasons. He could be saved because he was still able to want to be saved. I'm not sure, but perhaps the Jedi who disturbed his walk did so because they sensed the Darkside had not swallowed him - that he was merely a shallow and wounded soul. Surik could more easily forgive and show mercy - he had turned away from the Darkside already. For the record, it is possible to have compassion yet withhold mercy. A deranged Sith may be a pitiful slave of the ever corrupting Darkside, you can wish that it were not so for their sake and the sake of their victims, and you can strike them down with extreme predudice because of what they will do in service to the Darkside. ... or perhaps that is itself mercy... interesting to think about.

One day he happens upon a monk who doesn't fear him he says "if you think killing me will fulfill you then go ahead its my job to help people to fulfillment but I will say that it will not and you will never be fulfilled" the murderer ponders this and realizes the monk is right they talk some more and he becomes a monk, the victims family's attack him everyday but luckily for them he keeps on the path to true fulfillment.

If you ever listen to the rhythm of the name of the Smuggler's moon, think of a muppet moment. Mahna mahna. Everything you've said "Narr Shaddaa" I've done that.. thank you for getting away from the Hutts.. when I played SWToR my guild tried to ban me from even saying the name of the Smuggler's moon, heh heh.

Easily one of the best Star Wars games ever (after installing the Restored Content Mod). I think my favorite part of the game is arguing with Atris or the battle with Darth Nihilus' invasion force.
