A staple in American cinema, the diner scene has been a go-to for acclaimed filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino and David Fincher. Now, Tobias Lindholm, the Danish director making his first feature in the United States, “The Good Nurse,” hopes to add a memorable diner scene to the collection.
The movie is based on the story of Charles Cullen, the nurse who confessed to killing 29 patients at multiple hospitals in his career. Eddie Redmayne plays Charlie, and Jessica Chastain portrays Amy Loughren, a nurse who figures out his crimes after the two have become friends.
In this scene, Amy has set up a meeting with Charlie at a diner. She’s wearing a wire, and detectives are listening in. Her goal is to get Charlie to confess to the murders. The sequence mixes lunch-date mundanity with high-stakes tension in intriguing ways.
Narrating the video, Lindholm discusses how some of the elements that heighten the anxiety of the scene were executed - from tight framing to the movement outside that frame to the tools the actors use to convey a mix of emotions.

This is an excellent movie. Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Chastain delivered captivating performances onscreen. Seems like the tension and intensity in this never falter.

Eddie is one of the best actors of our generation. He's definitely up there with the greats, like Bogart, Pacino, Newman, and others. He can be romantic and handsome, dramatic and sad, or terrifying.

The acting in this scene was on another level. They were saying things to each other without really saying anything, only using their eyes and their gestures.

i've been watching TV and listening to people for a big part of my life, but only two times I felt how a conversation can be so intense where motions were really put to test. The first one was from the movie "Enemy" ( even though I don't think it was the right title) where Helen was siting on the couche having the conversation with Adam about what she saw that day, and the second, was the late part from the conversation between the messiah and the US president in the Netflix series "Messiah". I can tell that the ones who wrote those line understand that to feel fear, you don't need to see a ghost.

Watching this scene I wouldn't think Charlie would open up to Amy. A restaurant is too public for Amy to reel him into a confession; to many patrons or some could be sitting adjacent seats to Amy/Charlie. It would have been better at Amy's house where it was more private with the daughters not in the same room.
