As a groomer, ive seen this exact thing a few times. I was told the vet said i just wasnt trimming it. Not trimming doesnt do this. The nail was SO thick and flakey and soft inside just like you said, and it was super hard to trim and seemed very painful. I always suspected cancer, but never got confirmation.

First off I want to say that I’m very sorry for your loss of your beloved pet ❤ My dog has cancer in her toe/nail and I’m debating putting her through surgery to get it amputated. She’s almost 13 years old and a large breed. If you don’t mind me asking how old was Rufus when he went through surgery?

I'm so sorry to hear your pup is going through this 💜 It's really hard to say how old he was since he was a rescue but maybe around 10? If cost is an issue, I'd definitely call around and get quotes. Some vets can really vary in price & some offer payment plans. Sending my love 💜
