I first learned about the "Relic'ing" back in 99 from an article on Fender Custom Shop Master builder named Vincent Cunetto. I had to have one ! I purchased my dream Strat in 2001 a 1956 "Mary Kaye" Relic in Vintage blonde and still own it. 10/56 V-neck and swamp ash body-Fat 50's Pups and Gold Hdwr too. The southern swamp ash body was hand selected & Master Grade. . .it sings!!!

Get a MIJ guitar if you want high quality for a cheap price, I went to a store 2 years ago hunting for a new strat. Tried a few custom-made ones and the MIJ sounded superior to all of them, still thrilled playing it, might get a new one again soon tho.

When a strat is made right and in the hands of a great guitar player it is a wonderful thing. I love the tone of this guitar! It is near perfect IMO. And yes, brother Baxter, preach it about that middle pickup. The midrange is where the guitar lives in the mix anyway. Thanks for taking us thru the process of buying a master built guitar. It would be nice to have a video explaining the difference in a team built guitar and master built. You explain things well and have the experience. If you have already done that I apologize. To have some idea of basic pricing would be good also. I know there are a lot of variables once you get going but I would think there would be a base price. Thanks for all you do for us guitar nerds. Great video! I think there's not enough on KZbin about Fender Custom Shop & the master builders. The guitar itself sounds amazing. The one thing I've never understood is why the master builders don't give a current wait time each for builds on the Fender Custom Shop website. I know that for many, waiting isn't an issue, but for a few it is. Is there a specific reason they don't do this? Anyway, thanks for the video, please lets have more! xx

that's really a great idea! I may pass that on to the ol team over there. We've seen Vincents time skyrocket from less than a year to two and a half. It's a bit nutty. The best bet is just to find a great dealer you trust and love and ask them to keep you updated on who has the long waits. Seriously good ideas and thank you!

I use the middle all the time! Don’t know why people don’t like it. It cuts through more than the neck or neck-middle, but it’s not as strong or biting as the bridge🎸🤙

My dream Strat would be a Fender Custom Shop '57 heavy relic in black (or maybe black over sunburst), but I'm more of a Tele player, to tell the truth.

I love the patina of old guitars. Guitars that have had blood sweat and tears poured into them. Played out of them. Player and guitar trading pain and paint. Feelings and finish. I think the look must be earned. Start new with a nitro finish and put all your worries into the guitar. Eventually you will both have scars and stories on the inside and on the outside. Without sound the scars show that this guitar, this player has put a lot of emotion into the symbiotic relationship. But that's just my feelings on the subject.

P.S. I recently received my new Ultra HSS Stratocaster from Fender in Ultraburst with a maple neck. Visually, it's a stunning and a beautiful guitar. I love the way the neck looks and plays. It sounds just as a Fender Strat should sound, and the humbucker adds additional flexibility and sound possibilities that truly make this a superior and flexible guitar. I could have spent much more from Fender for what was at the time their standard Strat in the 50's or 60's, that is now just a historic relic . I could have spent even more at Fender for a "new" "relic" that looks beat up also. Nothing wrong with historical instruments. My last new Strat was a 40th Anniversary model. However, instead, I purchased a regular, guitar, just as those once were when they were new, top of Fender's line Strat that also looks new and beautiful. It sounds great and maybe in 50 or 60 years from now, people will pay outrageous amounts of money to buy one of these, or pay custom shop to make one like mine when it becomes a relic. Personally, I intend to keep mine in perfect condition while I completely enjoy playing an excellent Stratocaster.

Why is it that people who don’t like these strats actually bother to stop and type negative comments, if I come across a guitar that doesn’t appeal to me I just scroll on by. Ill explain to you then....its cause you basically get a run of the mill strat cut pretty much by the machine just like any other guitar out there(the guitar is pretty much spit out of the machine before any master luthier gets his hands on it) and then you try to sell the idea of a superior instrument just cause it has a very detailed and cool custom paint job and a certain logo.Nothing to do with relic hating we just dont think that an elaborate paint job should cost several thousand dollars since the rest are made just like any other production guitar out there.

it took me 3 yrs to build my master built stratocaster from finding the antique furniture the wood was reclaimed from to final setup,but cost me only my time and effort and the cost of the real vintage hardware i had collected over the yrs. i went with this idea i had to try to do a strat with a thick maple top and mahogany back like a les paul so that's what i did. for the Finnish i did an old world hand rubbed oil Finnish like a fine rifle stock would have.then i let it age for a few yrs and shot it with a thin nitro lacquer to help preserve the finish better and age like an old violin the neck is a br board 59-61 shaped also hand rubbed oil with nitro clear coat it has the thinner vintage frets but their almost ready to be swapped for the wide fat low rider Gibson fretless wonder frets next. i could go on and on with the details but refuse to type that much lol. it was the only way i was going to ever afford a fine instrument from hide glue to nitro lacquer evry trick i could find to make a true master built guitar with as many vintage 50s 60s components as one might want and it was a good idea!

It would continue to take wear, theoretically. But 99% of custom shops and especially master builts will never leave the music room of whatever old man bought it.

I was lucky enough to pickup a Custom Shop 1963 NOS Strat in red heavy flake sparkle. Amazing instrument! I don't know how much better a masterbulit could be....but I'd love to find out! Weird though...my PRS CE 24 is in the same quality range as my Custom Shop Strat...but so is my Mod Shop tele.

You know what’s kind of odd to me? I rarely see an actually really old strat, tele, Les Paul that looks like any heavy reliced guitar I see. I mean I’ve seen STV, and Rory Gallagher and Paul Kosoff’s. Wish I’d see more of those demo’d. She’s a beautiful thing though and that you can customize to that extent. Getting a heavy relic 52 tele. Ok, that guitar sounds righteous. Regardless of what it looks like. My (at the moment hypothetical) Custom Shop order would be an unusual custom colour, like Burgundy Mist, with matching headstock. I would specify what would basically be a brand new 1962 Stratocaster without a ding or scratch on it. It would be my job to put every scratch on it, wear down the finish by actually playing it, and create it's history myself. I mean no offense to those with great relic-ing skills or fans of pre-aged guitars. I just enjoy having a new instrument with all of it's newness intact. I also love buying old guitars that have been cared for but well-loved, showing signs of use but not abuse or neglect. But... Whatever floateth thine boat. The thing sounds amazing, so it could be painted with a motif featuring tiny portraits of Scoopy the Clown in a repeating op-art pattern and I'd still want to play it.

For me, any luthier is basically a master builder. The formula of a Strat was cracked years and years ago... I have an expensive Strat and I have a luthier one which is insane, the specifics I wanted and half of the cost. yes, there is no fender in the headstock but my favourite artists changed their guitars so much that its not stock at all...

I would do an almost random type selection so i got it as quick as possible.I would go to the newest master builder with the least experience,because i assume that the waiting time would be the least for that person.then as long as it had my playability specs and satin/sanded neck,then i would just specify colours and an amount of relicing,but I wouldn't be too specific about what kind of relicing.and then just tell them to go crazy! I know it would play great no matter what.I wonder if anyone ever gets a master built guitar and says "no relicing".I am not into relicing at all but that guitar right there is one of the best relic jobs I have ever seen.And i bet you can ask for that one to be recreated...ooh baby.....if you could "do it" with a guitar, i'd "do it" with that one

I have been playing guitar for 62 years. My first real (?) guitar was a 1954 Strat, (S/N 00249), May 6, 1954. I have had many guitars. I prefer them as close to new as possible. I have never understood the need to build a new guitar to look as if it played every bar for 50 years and then was dragged down a gravel road. I have a nephew who bought a '97 strat that had dog bite marks on it. At least, the marks were genuine. Why would anyone pay all that money to fake the genuine marks?

It has been a long year of waiting and another 6 months to go, maybe. Ordered a Blungeon by Greg Fezler. Could be wrong on spelling. Shocked at the price increase in the last year. Regular guitars go for same price now as a masterbuild. If necessary will sell my 72 es335 and 66 tele for this guitar.

I really want a Custom Shop strat. What would I expect with a Masterbuilt guitar that I can't find with a Team Built?

Since no one has answered yet I’ll do the best I can to explain. Disclaimer, I have never owned either, even though I have played both at high end dealers and I have friends who have owned them. Both are great, well made guitars with a high level of attention to details. Keep in mind the people who build the Team Built guitars often become Master Builders. First (and very important for some people), you get to choose the Master Builder for your build. Each one has a unique set of experiences and most have a particular area of expertise. Second, with a Master Build your chosen builder will do all of the work (except for making the pickups and maybe a few other things depending on your specific build). Third, the biggest difference is that with the step up to Master Built you literally get the opportunity to have what ever you want built (assuming of course that it is possible and that you are able and willing to pay the price). Team Built, on the other hand, you are limited to the choices that are listed in the current Custom Shop Builder guide. In my opinion, if you can get what you want from the Team Built options (and I think most people can) the only reason to buy a Master Built is so that you can own a guitar built by your preferred builder who ever that might be.

I have both and honestly the quality is top level on either the masterbuilt or custom built. The ordering process and the non standard options are really the reason for the masterbuilt guitars. I love anything from the custom shop 🤘

Charles had some great answers there and really does nail a lot of it. It really comes down to having one person build your instrument , the limitless options a Masterbuilt level opens up, and the ability to really tweak and this instrument to the end. Masterbuild guitars also open up the option to Josefina pickups. Also we would agree that for most pieces, a team build can get you all the way there and beyond. Hey guys love ur work. If I call you and say I don’t give a sh!t what it looks like but I want a strat or tele that rings like a bell unplugged....ive found I can fix any neck or pup or setup issues but I can’t find that resonance, that highs in the lows lows in the highs “thing” that my best guitars have. Is it better to order a custom build w select woods or rely on a dealer to survey all stock until one shows up. How would you answer this challenge.

tricky question and a good one. It is often great to find a dealer you trust in to go through their selection if you have a particular sound you are looking for (resonance style). We have been really lucky on both ways just due to our relationship with the team at the custom shop. I hope that helps and really, thank you for the great question!
