Today's cars are a lot safer - and the airbags, forward collision detection, cameras and most of the safety systems all rely on ... electronics. The biggest gripe isn't really the electronics, it's the fact that to most people they're just a complex black box, so diagnosing and fixing any electrical fault is beyond them. We tend to look at the past through rose coloured glasses but the stats tell us vehicles built back then with mechanical points and carburetors were much less reliable than modern cars.
@davetaylor4741Ай бұрын
@mondotv4216 Very debatable. Road traffic accidents are going up not down. As are road deaths. Incidents of car caused accidents from so called driver aids and safety features. Tesla's are very good at hitting things on their own. In car distractions are also a major contributing factor to accidents. The old tanks I drove as a kid were so solid they hardly bent in an accident. Plus the simple nature of the things made them easy to fix with no special tools. My son in law is a mechanic. Specialising in all the electronics. And not only are they always going wrong. The cost of repairing the problems, often writes the cars off prematurely. So I will keep my 25 year old Ute with no electronics and annoying habits. And it is very reliable. Plus simple to work on.

those corolla/camry hybrids will all still be on the road in 30 years. Most probably still with the original owner. The hybrid system is brilliant for mulling about on inner-city roads. The mistake they've made is trying to stick all that shit in things that are going to get thrashed about in the middle of bum-fuck nowhere. They used to actually test their cars in the middle of the Australian outback, which is one of the reasons they gained such a great reputation. Whatever that thing was, it obviously wasn't tested on anything other than a track.

'' but all the tracks are made for toyotas.''.. no there not. land rover made them.. Lifelong Toyota fan boy here. I don't mind paying a premium for a superior product, but the value equation with Toyota has fallen so much, it's now beyond a joke. Same old motor, a token hybrid that adds little except complexity, the extra requirement of ad blue, less fuel capacity, and a messy boot set up. All for an extra $10K. So I looked at used Prados, but even then you're looking at $40-50K for a 5-10 yr old car with 100K on the clock and you run the gauntlet of injector or DPF issues. So for the same price I bought a brand new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport with 10yr warranty, super-reliable, great off road and good fuel economy... Very happy.

Perhaps an analysis of this is in order. If every new model was that bad no manufacturer would still be in business. Logically some vehicles will have faults but common sense suggests most new models both past and present will be ok. The problem now is, with such short model cycles and cars being disposable items, R&D isnt about improving durability, but just getting the vehicle to last for its designed lifetime which probably isnt much longer than the warranty period.

Engineers need to go back to design school and have ALL the basic functions that require a vehicle to start and move hard encoded into the engine management system as a get you home function (I know some vehicles have a limp mode !). Even if you have to click an ''I Accept" button on the dash that'd be fine by me. To have a car completely not start at all (here's where I am not buying Toyotas cloak and dagger explanation for this event) for a seemingly minor sensor detection is abysmal. There was another vehicle that was out bush when a rear wheel speed sensor wire got snagged by a stick and had broken the cable. The car would not drive at all after this. I get it that the ABS and traction control would not operate as designed, but to leave a vehicle STRANDED because of this, is design incompetence. Similarly a dash notification and "I Accept" option with an explanation of the issue and consequences would be far superior than being stranded with thousands of dollars in recovery costs for a broken sensor wire. I love high tech stuff, but it has to be as fool proof as possible for the BASIC vehicle functions.

I can't believe Toyota has gone so far down hill in quality and warranty. The only Toyota car I actually owned was a Celica and also 2 Hi Lux pickups. Never had any major problems. Basically tyres, brake pads, oil and filters with one pickup requiring tie rod end and ball joint. Even when they were worn out and my mum gave me her Corolla...no problems. I thought the fuel injected motor would get cranky with some kms on it but no. With 360,000km on it it was still doing well. I changed to Mitsubishi after that and never had trouble up to this day.

I've done multiple deep river crossings in my 2016 Prado and have not once had any "malfunction". It's the pointless 48v system and the half arsed implementation of it that's the problem.
@Saphire043726 күн бұрын
Funny, I thought he said it was the airbox leak and that the engine was dead. Something doesn't add up. It's the same old 2.8 essentially with a beefed up electrical system. The 48v system crapping itself shouldn't brick the motor its bolted to. The battery sits in the car and the system under the hood is at the same level height wise that the electrics have always been. So firstly, how does an airbix leak affect any of this? And secondly, if somehow the 48v system is the culprit, why is the whole car "dead"? There are some porkies being told here somewhere.

14:37 - I discovered this on our first V8 Land Cruiser Minesite vehicles 15 years ago. We would have to seal the filter element edges with Denso tape to stop dust passing around the filter to the engine!! On the water entry to the alternators via the air filter, sounds probable to me that Toyota has ducted air from the housing to alternator body for cooling... Must have chosen the bottom of the enclosure 🤣🤣🤣

I noticed in the comments questions like "While we are at the “bogan Siri” development, can someone explain why we need a scan tool in cars today? I mean, we have a computer screen the size of an iMax theatre on the dash so why doesn’t it tell us every diagnostic a scan tool can do?" I can answer that 1 way, my 1983 EX Falcon Manual told me how to set the timing among many other things. My 2022 Kia Stinger Manual has a warning label across the front telling me not to drink the fluid out of the battery. Seeing as how 3/4 of Australia's population has been brain washed into buying these absolute POS's (I include ALL 4wd's in that). After working for a mechanic for 20 years and seeing the cost of tyres maintenance and all the bullshit that goes into a 4bee you have to be insane to own 1 period. @@Alex-tu9bh The 48V systems enable the engine stop-start system to be more assertive in the ADR / WLTP fuel consumption and emissions tests (urban cycle). This can make the lab test fuel consumption and emissions a fair bit lower - the latter of which is important in the context of NVES. The fact that it is pretty much pointless in the real world is irrelevant when you have regulations to deal with!
