Thanks for the explanation. This will be helpful in diagnosing my problem when I had no power when starting my motorcycle. The bike was running great and I topped off the fuel and there was no power when I restarted the bike. ps. I had recently replaced the battery and stator.

Kyle Winters check out the rectifier with a multi meter if your headlight blows then it's a sign of your rectifier is on its way out

Alright ..so I just swapped my stator and my regulator and when I took off my stator cover I had a fair amount of oil come out, now when I look up videos people say "a little bit of oil comes out". I'm not sure if something else might be wrong.. I have a Kawasaki 650r is that a normal thing to have oil around your stator? Sounds more like your stator is bad and isn't charging the battery.

I have just stuked with installing the ignition system of honda cd 90. I have disassemble every part of the engine and reassemble them after cleaning and applying lubricating oil on some parts.I am a self learner but now I have a trouble with installing ignition system. I set the statar and then I don't no hove set up wiring that are ahead on my proccess. Please. My stator is making a sound of electricity when the bike is on. There is no charging for battery. But there is an electricity is comming from the stator and from the regulator. I think there is a mass in the wires. Is that probably?!

so in theory i can keep my light running on my bike since it never stops producing current while i ride. If I dont use the power the Regulator/Rectifier would just dump it as heat through its cooling fins, correct?

Correct. Newer bikes keep their lights running while the bike is in use.

Wrong. If your lights are not on and you are not drawing the associated power (current) needed, the alternator is doing no work and the engine turns the rotor more easily. When you switch on your lights, the alternator has to do more work in order to generate the required power and becomes more difficult to turn. I think from your question, you are assuming that just because the alternator is turning, it is generating current and therefore, where does this current go??? It is not generating current to the lights if they are not switched on. It is however generating a voltage and it is the voltage regulator that keeps this within limits. It’s primary purpose is not for dissipating heat from “unused” power although I can understand the confusion

The magnets, whether real permanent ones, or electromagnets, are on the rotor, or flywheel as you call it, not on the stator. Sometimes there is an additional electromagnet on the stator.

Hello revvin,. I've got a cb900c that is not charging the battery. Had it checked by mechanic and everything should work, but barely getting 13V at 4500 RPM. But put iron nail on rotor (5.2 Ohms) this morning with ignition on and off and it does not stick to it. Is my rotor demagnetized, or is that the job of the regulator/rectifier and it is faulty? Hope you answer cause I'm getting desperate.

Your regulator should be fine. If your battery has trouble keeping charge after replacing the stator, then you will want to change the regulator.

The battery is charged by the stator (generator). Batteries are used because they provide more reliable power, and they are needed for more advanced electronics modern bikes have. The stator does not provide enough to power it all.

The battery is to provide the electricity for the starter. My rd400f 2- cylinder 2 stroke has no battery but does have a kick start. Horn and lights work once it's running.

Moana Liberti They used to put generators on bikes a long time ago. Generators are very heavy, and not exactly small either.

A generator actually produces AC internally on the armature. To get DC, a commutator and brushes are used on the current coming off the rotor. You mixed how the spark and charger work, did not explain how the rectifier works and said nothing of the internal workings of the regulator. The wires can take many 10s of thousands of volts just fine, they wouldnt fry. have you studied the physics or EE of this? Which are better, vacuum tube diodes or solid state diodes in terms of efficiency and leakage current? Could you explain how a diode works in terms of Fermi energy, depletion region and junction resistance? Just wondering. In a conductor do electrons travel mostly at the center of the wire or on the edge?

That's a hard question to answer because there are so many things that make the motorcycle go. You should first learn about 4 stroke engines so you can understand how the piston, cylinder, valves, camshaft and crankshaft operate.

Undine66770 gas/air mixture goes into the cylinders of the bike then is ignitined by the sparkplugs creating a little explosion which expands and pushes down on the piston which is connected to the crankshaft. The crankshaft turns and produces useful work (also known as torque) this torque is transmitted from the engine to the transmission through the clutch and flywheel and then from the transmission to the rear wheel via a chain (or a belt or shaft). The user makes all this happen by slowly letting out the clutch to slowly connect the engine to the transmission (and the wheel) while simultaneously opening the throttle to make the engine turn faster and produce enough torque to move the bike. Once you are rolling the clutch stays out and the engine stays fully engaged with the transmission (unless dank wheelies are required then you pop it)
