One thing I noticed about BOMBAY's music is how ARR used Gujarati folk song "HEY JEERE" as background music when Manisha Koirala lands in Bombay. This music captures very well the essence of Bombay of 90s. That piece of music is heavenly. I have been trying to find audio version of that piece of music since ages but to no avail.

The flute theme is in Ananda Bhairavi The song Tu Hi Re with it's charanam is in Charukesi The song Kehna Hi Kya is in Kirwani Each of these ragas express a certain bhava and Rahman knew how to use those to full advantage!

@@sanchitaghosh6289 How do u know it's stalking, in the first place? Nowadays ppl are using the word 'stalking' for everything as they wish. They are not aware of the meaning of the word. If getting to know a girl is stalking, then everyone will be single forever. Girls be like " He must have the guts to come and talk to me." but then they dont want them to look at them in public or "follow" them??? Like what???? Are boys suppose to read your mind to get to know you, and to know if u like him back or not???? I dont get it...In that movie, that guy was trying to get to know her. Whenever she came across him, she didn't even say "don't follow me" or showed any sign of being uncomfortable with his presence. What does that suppose to mean? Especially when there's no much of a technology developments to access and get to know about a person..How else should he tried to confess his love??? The main reason she tried to avoid him was bcs the difference in religion and she definitely knew the consequences. Not bcs she thought he was stalking her. Oh Come on ! Mani sir has nvr had the intention to teach negative things to his audience. He just shows the reality in his movies. If that looks like he's trying to promote stalking culture to YOU, then the problem is with you, not the movie or the Creator. Ppl talked about this thing for Dil Se too.. I just can't understand their thought process. Just because it happened to us and we personally went through something like it, that doesn't mean we should look at things with a suspicious and negative mind... Don't get confused with GETTING TO KNOW SOMEONE and STALKING !!!

The man who bought the concept of harmony, obligatos and polyphonic lines in bollywood is Salil chowdhury.. I agree that his background scores were not as effective as ar rahman but we have to consider that he was the one who started the trend of making melodies which follow chord progressions.. you know both rahman and ilayaraja were influenced by his legacy (both ar rahman's father and ilayaraja were musicians who worked with him).. I am writing this because when you are talking about western musical concepts in Indian cinema music.. you have to talk about one of the pioneers of that..

Its not just Bombay, you have a similar feeling when you watch Saathiya. It originates from Chalka Chalka (like the thrill of love at first sight), the 2 trains crossing scene right after the song, then it gets lost in family troubles after marriage, and then it plays back as Rani comes back to consciousness during the end, rekindling the same old feeling of first love (making you teary). That's the leitmotif genius of Rehman for you! If you are a fan of AR Rehman, you might have sensed its effect 20 years back, even when you were too small to understand why.

I mean the scores used in Saathiya are essentially same the as Alaipayuthei's score (with or two motifs being changed or rewritten) but you make a very good point. Rahman does use motifs in both Alaipauthei/Saathiya and Dil Se. In fact, it's really obvious in all A.R. Rahman and Mani Ratnam films. However, my favourite one has to be Kannathil Muthamitaal.

This is an amazing insight into not just ARRs early and enduring 30-year+ genius and innovation but a masterclass in a ‘how to’ analysis of a masterpiece background score… Also struck me that in the ‘staircase’ scene, Aravind Swamy’s Sufi theme contrastingly complements Manisha’s Carnatic riff. Conflicting cultures harmoniously conversing ..just mesmerising intellectuality in using music for storytelling… He’s the same to date..

Rahman sirs background music can move Mountains like you explained we can see the depth and meaning behind each note and sound.❤️🙌🙏please make more of such videos.

Thank you so much man for this video. I was hankering for a video on how AR Rahman creates music since when I really started to like his songs but I couldn't find any. I also wish if you could make a video on just the mind-blowing creativeness of the musician through his so many brilliant tunes he had created over his career and how he incorporates music, lyrics and instrumentation in his songs when everything else we hear from other artists are just vocals and exaggerated tunes . Keep making videos man. I really appreciate your work.

Hello Vineet. A huge, huge fan this side. I know it must take you weeks on the research and scripting, editing your content. However, i do feel you need to be more consistent with your videos. It breaks my heart that in the video "50 films i love" you spoke about how 50k could be the only milestone in your youtube career. But we cannot disagree that putting out videos consistently will make things 10 times better. Just a thought. Again, not my place but want to see you succeed. As a sound engineer myself, i feel this video should reach places.

@6:58 and 7:03 you hear the melody. While @6:58 melody is just instrumental(flute being central), the @7:03 melody is vocal (male voice). While the first one being instrumental (flute) shows a hint of acknowledgement, Shekhar's voice being "vocal" gives you greater approval and commitment. Now @7:30, there is an addition of rythm (the beat of tabla) in the background. This shows the growth in relationship musically. Had it been only the melody with one instrument, it might not express the Improvement in their relationship. Rehman does this addition of instrumentation in First Song as well ("kehna hi kya") which starts with vocals delivering melody and then the addition of bass and strings and then the addition of beats and in other songs of the movie. This addition of musical instruments is common. But using it to express the direction of emotions in the scenes and story is Rehamn's Brillance.

So much hard work and talent go into creating such masterpieces. It's really sad that songs with outlandish music and lyrics and remixes get millions of views. No wonder Rahman was so angry!

Although I, as a layman listener, , was aware of the essence of what Vinit so eloquently explains here, thanks to this video I appreciate the art behind musical storytelling better ever since, when I watch every movie. Thanks ! Underlines why ARR is still at the top of his game even now, peerless, just for the sake of music and not competitive tags or money.

Not many people know this but the Bombay theme was also used in the Nicholas Cage movie 'Lord of War' (2005). Seems like even Hollywood has taken a bow to this musical legend. Blessed to call him my countryman!
