This video is very helpful. I'm trying to diagnose a issue with my transmission and seeing the gears exposed like this is great.

Thank You! Thats one of the best explanations of how a manual transmission works that I've seen.

Thanks a lot from Spain! I recently finish the rebuild of a Spitfire mk3 and your videos and clear explanations has helped me a lot!! (BTW, I'm in love with your gloves!😍😍)

Perfect explanation. Now I understand the bearing that’s making noise on the input shaft.

I have rebuilt probably a dozen TR-6 and Spitfire gearboxes. This was a great explanation of how they work. The TR-6 gearbox has a few weak spots. The bearings in the layshaft tend to eat into the layshaft which destroys it. The top hat bushings tend to break if one slams the gear changes too much. The rest of the gearbox is very robust. They are easy to rebuild and require no special tools.

The top hat was broken in this one. Coming up in the next videos

Thanks Elin, I now understand a lot more about this ‘simple’ system (your words, not mine). It does leave me still wondering how exactly the miracle of synchro rings works. Maybe a future topic, please.
@RustyBeauties2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I should have explained that as well, but I thought of it way too late. Everything was taken apart already. Maybe when I am putting it back together I might explain that.

That was a great explanation Elin. Now I know how the gearbox works. I have rebuilt engines but I was never game to tackle a gearbox. This helps a lot. Cheers Chris in Australia

You are a very good explainer. I've watched you explain this a number of times and this was probably the best version. Any chance you good do a similar short video on how the synchros works? Nobody ever explains those. Never understood the mechanics of why those don't grind just like normal gears.

I will include that in my transmission assembling video in the overdrive series I am working on now

I have always been fine with engines and have rebuilt a couple, but gearboxes have always been a little bit of a mystery to me. Now you have helped me to understand what is going on under the stick . Much appreciated and a great video explanation, thank you.

Excellent! That's probably the best explanation I've heard. Don't think it matters what car it's from does it? I would think all work the same
@RustyBeauties2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the concept is the same. Just like engines, they are all the same, but they are all different :)

Very enjoyable video, and very clearly explained, well done!! I love these old triumphs, would love to have a Vitesse, it's that shape around the headlights. I had a 1976 spitfire and did a running overhaul of most things whilst using it on a daily basis. I did get caught out on the gearbox though the last stage is to refit the cover and just below the cover is an interlock plate which stops you being able to engage both gear pairs at the same time. If you don't fit that you can lock the gearbox up completely! Unfortunately I found out the hard way!! Good luck from Spain!!

Hi Elin Very educational video 😀👍 My TR6 gearbox has a noise i neutral and in 1-2-and 3 gear, but in 4. Gear it is quiet. I suspect a baering to make the noise, but which Baering would you suspect ? I think either the needle baering between the input and output shaft, or the baerings in each end of the countershaft. My plan is to take the gearbox outof the car this winter.
