The Selanne deal also indirectly led to Anaheim acquiring Scott Niedermayer as a free agent, since his brother Rob being on the team was one of the reasons he signed there. 🦆

As a sens fan those names will haunt my nightmares for the rest of my life. 98-2007 they were really, really good but they almost always found a way to choke against the Curtis Joseph led Leafs and Dominick Hasek Sabres. But in spite of that they managed 2 deep playoff runs. In 03 they got to the Conf Championship but got stymied by the defense of the double Scotts in Stevens and Niedermeyer. Then they get past that demon to reach the Stanley Cup only to completely embarrass themselves by running into both Niedermeyers against the Ducks.

It should be noted that part of the reason it took so long for Teemu Selänne to get to the NHL was the fact that he was required to serve in the Finnish military when he turned 18.

Yeah, it is not a good argument. Minimun service time is six months and they have a special ”sport troops” where all the athletes do their service. Everything is easier there, lot of vacations and everything is done sport and training first. Had a brother there, it is easy, I know. Bigger reason was, and I wonder why they didn’t mention it, was that he had a serious injury after his draft year. I think it was his thigh bone that got shattered badly. Too lazy to check what ot was, but it was bad. Also, there were contract dissagreents with Jets and Calgary actually made him offer that Jets then countered.

As I recall, Selanne was considered by many as the top player in his draft year, but fell because of his (lack of) availability to play in North America…he had to perform military service in Finland. I also seem to recall that Winnipeg was forced into a trade choice…between resigning and keeping either Selanne or Keith Tkachuk. I think that’s how it played out.

Selanne was thinking of retiring after the year in Colorado. Lucky for him there was a lockout after that and he had time to get surgery on his knee and rehab it to 100% and after that decided to keep on playing and he only wanted to play in Anaheim. That's why he took a huge pay cut and signed for 1 mil.

Went to MANY Ducks home games during Teemu's first run with the Ducks when he was on the same line with Paul Kariya... the two of them were definitely fun to watch... but the team relied almost exclusively on them for scoring and didn't have much else, and when games got BAD, I remember my father and I electing to leave sometimes during the second period... I was also there when he raised the Cup, and was also there for his last home playoff game when the Kings saluted him off the ice.

A big "What Could Have Been" with regards to Selanne that sticks in my Flames fan mind is that in the summer of 1992, since he hadn't signed a rookie contract yet, Teemu Selanne became a restricted free agent as per the rules of the time, and so the Calgary Flames, still stinging from the Doug Gilmour trade a half-season prior, signed him to an offer sheet: 3 years, $400k per year, $32k more than the league average back then and more than twice Winnipeg's offer. Obviously the Jets matched it and Selanne went on to have an incredible season and career; and so some of us are left to wonder how Selanne as a Flame would have panned out...

When you think about it, it's because of this trade that Anaheim has three numbers in its rafters right now. Obviously Teemu. But Rob Niedermayer is the reason Scott came to Anaheim, specifically to play with his brother for a few seasons, and he put up numbers for us in his time. But while Kariya had a great first season, Selanne (and Rooch) unlocked him and turned him from great into a HOFer. So yeah, thanks Winniphoenizona. @@WaddickLawnCare If you look at the paths of the initial picks traded it ends up giving St Louis guys like O'Reilly and Schenn. Just have to do some digging and see what the picks traded ended up becoming. They've also done trade trees in the past where it just stops on one player for a team because the other side is fun to see, and it gives you a new perspective on what initially seems like a slam dunk trade for the Capitals.

Even though this isn't direct trade, the ducks acquired Scott Niedermayer because he want to play with his brother Rob.

If you need ideas for a trade tree: December 30, 1997 - Edmonton trades Bonsignore, Bryan Marchment and Steve Kelly to Tampa Bay in exchange for Roman Hamrlík and the rights to Paul Comrie This is how Vincent Lecavalier ended up in Tampa and how they won their first cup. It's also a pretty big trade tree.

He had a broken knee since the last season with the anaheim, sj/col era was with a broken knee, got it fixed during the lockout and they got back the old goal scorer.

I miss hearing the music. It makes the video slightly more enjoyable to watch. It’s still my favourite series of videos to watch though

Even Burke admits that Bryan Murray (RIP) was the architect behind it. He traded for Rob with the plan to lure Scott later. Drafted Getzlaf and Perry. So ironic that Bryan lost to them in 07 final. Personally, I thought he deserved a ring for his work

The fact that Paul Kariya wasn't on that 2007 Ducks team was criminal

Even though kilger and tverdovsky were top 5 picks, the fact that this trade was 3 for 3 was insane. If this trade happened today it would have been selanne to Anaheim and 2 1st round picks, 2 top prospects, and 1 good roster player to Winnipeg

Can you sum the games played, goals, points, awards totals of each side of these trees. Would be interesting to compare them

A curiously interesting (sorta) note on the Coyotes/ Flames trade involving Carney, Freddie Sjostrom played for the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL. Also, I'm a long time Flames fan and I dont remember Carney at all. I do remember Kobasew and Taratukhin. Disappointment all around

I would argue the only reason scott niedermayer signed with the ducks was that his brother there…underrated

The Gilmore trade tree is also involves another trade tree that hurt the flames and it’s not the leafs deal. Also side note. It ended in 2020.

Oleg Tverdovsky was tagged as the "Russian" Bobby Orr. So no pressure there then. 🤔
