3 жыл бұрын

Last year, Adam showed us his repair of his vintage Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses--the same kind that were worn by early NASA astronauts and aerospace pilots. To store those glasses along with his replicas, Adam has received a lovely NASA-inspired sunglasses case from our friends at Luna Replicas (lunareplicas.com/)!

My dad was in the Air Force, a private pilot, and aviation buff. I grew up making pilgrimages to Oshkosh EAA Airshow. I got to meet guys like Chuck Yeager, Pappy Boyington, Alan Shepard, John Glenn, Burt Rutan, and many others. They were my heroes and they all wore American Optics aviators. I found a pair in my dad’s junk pile of a desk. I had them cleaned up and new lenses put in. Cost more than buying new but that wasn’t the point. Love those glasses!

After Adam's video repairing the aviators and then talking about the Luna Replicas, I got a pair of the serial numbered Luna Replica American Optical aviators for my son for his HS graduation. When he got them, I liked them so much, I got my own pair, with a very special, personal serial number. And just about a month, 6-weeks ago, I got this carry-case for the sunglasses. Everything Luna Replicas makes is just amazing quality!
@SlickWillyTFCF
@SlickWillyTFCF Жыл бұрын
The original designation for those glasses was the FG-58, and the navy blue vinyl carrying case had the same injection molded plastic holder inside. I recently found the pair I bought when I was in high school JROTC 25 years ago hiding in an old box of my stuff that was in my parents attic. American Optics still makes them, but they're called the Original Aviator now. The green glass lenses are 🤌.

AOs will do that. I always felt it's because the case they come with is very soft and when the bayonets are folded one of them always pushes the other one down if you compress it at all in storage. The insert in the Luna Replicas case actually reminds me very much of the insert in the case that came with my RE glasses, maybe something RE took note of when they were designing their system whereas the case on the AO is an afterthought as they were designed for contract and were not popular with the civilian market until very recently, like just the last decade or so.

I haven't built it yet, but even just the box and instruction manual are friggin' epic! Please do this, Adam??!!! If not, maybe have Norm do it (knowing him, Norm's like me, and ordered it on 4-1. Those look almost identical to the flight deck sunglasses I was issued in the US Navy back in the early 1990s... gov't issued sunglasses are all fairly similar I guess? I had no idea there was a potential market for them and donated them (along with a pile of other old glasses that had out-of-date prescriptions for me, including my bootcamp-issued "BC" glasses lol) to my local Lions club a few years ago. I never had the nifty little canvas pouch though, just some sort of hard-shell case I think... and mine always sat on my face crooked too!

I got the Luna replica type 3 flight jacket last month, I put a really nice DM2 (AB-emblems) mission patch on the shoulder. It is a gorgeous jacket, only downside is the sizing. I am Dutch and pretty tall even for our standards (6.5” in freedom units), I got the large one which make me look a little ‘fat’ when I zip it up, and the sleeves tend to crawl up when I wear a backpack. The jacket is completely wind and water tight btw, so when cycling you will get extremely sweaty when wearing a backpack. It has gotten to a point where I got saddlebacks to put the backpack in (the doodle dog already gets the crate in front). Anyway, amazing stuff from Luna replicas, they came onto my radar because of you Adam, I believe you wore their jacket with a Apollo 8 patch on a nasa spacesuit video but I am not 100% sure. Thanks!
