Adam removes his glasses to work on Micheal's glasses. A clear case of blind leading the blind.
@michaelkeller50088 жыл бұрын
Nope, probably, Adam's shortsighted... If that's the case, the glasses make everything appear to be smaller; but working in "short distance" allowes a short-sighted to take off the glasses... As the brain gets used to the smaller images, this CAN (in most cases) work like a magnifying-glass... I'm using this "tactic" myself (well - minus 6 dpt makes things appear VERY small)... Works great
@DrewNorthup8 жыл бұрын
Nah, he's just nearsighted. If he were shortsighted he'd probably be dead by now. And yes, when I take a wristwatch apart and put it back together I tend to take my glasses off if I'm not using a loupe.

@@nikkishins A agree with this. I think he knew what it was as well. I also do appreciate the fact that Michael is one of those people who will jump at the opportunity to show he doesn't know something. It's a good characteristic that a lot of "smart people" could learn from. It's okay to not know everything. It's not okay to willingly be ignorant of everything or pretend like you knew something for the sake of posterity. We all have embarrassing moments where our lack of knowledge or understanding shines through. Own it. Change it. Learn from it.

chemistry? I have never seen Adam less interested in holding a conversation with someone - he was entirely focused on the task at hand. normally in a one-day build, Adam's assistant would be asking about the process so the audience knows what's going on. here instead Michael was literally telling his life story. hoo da fuk cares. Does Michael even know why he's being filmed? Michael's weird obsession with his ruined glasses was distracting - eyeglasses cost about as much as a pizza these days. So these have a mike in them now - go to Warby Parker or Zenni or whatever and get another pair. Michael's mansplaining about "three voices" was cringeworthy. Does he not think that Adam Savage, a bright guy who's been on TV for decades, doesn't understand the concept of room reverberations and bone conduction? I'll say one thing though this was seriously illuminating on how I should hold a conversation with someone who's uninteresting, chatty and not very bright, if I want to be polite and seem interested.

@SianaGearz8 жыл бұрын
Yeah glasses can be expensive. If you're ordering on high street, and you want the best lenses, you're gonna pay about 500€ for just the lenses. And then, it's kind of a no-brainer to spend an extra 200€ or more for frames, because what the heck. And then of course you've got insurance, it's pretty cheap, but it doesn't exactly cover somebody getting to work on your glasses with a Dremel. And the worst part is that if you need new ones made, you get to wait for a few weeks. Whether you're paying 20€ or 800€, you're all in the same queue. And then it could take weeks till you get used to the new ones, and then you never want to take those off.

You gotta be an Adam Savage if you dare to glue something to glasses with cyanoacrylate without covering the glass with tape. I would never ever ever have the guts (or considering my skills - be stupid enough) to do that.
@kynigosthewolf45738 жыл бұрын
what happens if it gets on glass ? and why that specific type of glue ?
@Gaminginvader-f4h8 жыл бұрын
+KynigosTheWolf cyanoacrylate (superglue) causes many clear plastics (such as glasses lens) to become very foggy due to it acting as a solvent and actually melting a thin layer of the lens.
@CasMullac8 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you notice but he did when the mic came unseated. Thats why he had a solvent on hand in the lil spray bottle, although that also probably removed any coating that was on the glasses and not just the adhesive.
@Gaminginvader-f4h8 жыл бұрын
***** The kicker is actually safe for clear plastics
@MrMilarepa1088 жыл бұрын
Cyanoacrylates you'll only remove mechanically. Put it on your glasses and they're DONE. DEAD. Forever. With solvent you'll only smear it into a thin film. But he didn't smudge the glasses:Cyanoacrylates will take forever to harden if you don't use either insta-set or sodium bicarbonate. The little spray bottle isn't solvent, it's insta-set accelerator - put it on ca glues and they harden instantly. (I read a forensic research paper that suggested cocaine would also work, but that's cost prohibitive.)

I'm nearsighted, too. Us, nearsighted people, we have a bad far eyesight but our close eyesight is often very good. In fact, it depends on our astgmatism and presbyopia levels, if we have. If our presbyopia level is higher than our myopia level, our near eyesight become bad. Idem, if we have an hypermetropic astigmatism. Obviously, we can have an hypermetropic or myopic astigmatism and presbiotia, in a same time.

TheMrVengeance Why hilarious? Most people don't understand phonetic symbols. There's a time and a place and this isn't it.
@cavalrycome8 жыл бұрын
TheMrVengeance Well, I'm also a linguist, and it's not hilarious to me. You're sacrificing intelligibility for accuracy. As for your examples, you as a linguist ought to know perfectly well that the letter 'j' in English is much more likely to have the value /ʒ/ than /j/ as in words like 'adjust', and an English speaker would be very unlikely to pronounce 'ay' according to either of your suggestions but very likely to pronounce it by analogy with words like 'day' (i.e., an /eɪ/ sound), so I think most English speakers would understand my intention to a pretty close approximation the way I wrote it.
@cavalrycome8 жыл бұрын
TheMrVengeance Yes, English spelling has a lot of irregularity, but that is not to say that there aren't many predictable relationships between letters and sounds. I stuck cautiously to letters that do have predictable values. I assumed my comment would primarily be interesting to people who speak different English accents since that's how the discussion in the video arose, but yes, if there are a lot of IPA-trained, non-native English speakers reading through the comments section of this English language video, I could have made myself clearer by using IPA, but then which vowels would I use, or should I list every regional variation? I think you are just using this thread as a pretext to show off some smarts.
