+RooFooChoo I don't think that persons who touch other persons' hair in that manner necessarily mean to be rude or offensive. If that were so, they most likely wouldn't want to touch it in the first instance. I think that they are just curious, even fascinated by hair that is so very different from their own

Whats wrong with embracing your blackness and being "more black". I take it as a compliment especially since Latinos that deny there blackness look crazy i am proud to be black. And i hope more Afro Latinos embrace that important and crucial side.
@mmsantana8092
@mmsantana8092 8 жыл бұрын
If your comment is about what the girl said, it wasn't like "being more black" is bad. It's that a wrong assumption, saying "someone it's more black than Latino" or the reverse, because these are things that aren't even on the same category. Being black doesn't stands in the way no even one bit of being Latinx, as being Latinx doesn't stands in the way of being black, because while the first is about race, the second is solely about culture - even though many people still use it the wrong way. You can be 100% Latino and 100% black at the same time.

This is so relatable. I am the product of two black Panamanian parents who has locs, which apparently are a magnet for grubby, unsolicited hands. LOL. Or, alternately, they stand for a forfeiture of your "latina card" according to onlookers. A few years ago, my mother and I were the sole customers in a store and began speaking Spanish to each other. Not surprisingly, the clerk began craning his neck to see who else was in the store and upon actually witnessing that the conversation was ours, inquired, "How did you learn that?". My mother replied, "We're from Latin America, so Spanish is my first language.", to which the man said (drumroll), "No, no. Latinas are pretty with nice hair." My mom flipped her long locs to the back, turned to me and said "Yes, we are!"

I wish more people knew about the African ancestry of the Spanish speaking countries. I'm just now doing research and it all makes sense now, as to why I notice so many black features in the "Spanish" (you ain't from Spain) people I grew up around. It sucks that on this planet people put dark skin as the lowest form of beauty and hold whiter skin complexions as the greatest thing the eyes can see.

this is important to me!!! like I grew up in the Dominican Republic and for 18 years my dad would force me to get a buzz cut because "eso cabello malo no se ven bien largo" when I got to the US and I got a taste of what FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION feels like (believe me you dont have as bad as in DR) I decided to let my hair be. My mom woul get out of her way EVERY DAYA to let me know that "el afro ese te hace ver como un loco; parecen que estas enfermo; tu no pareces que vas a la universidad; ese corte no va con tu personalidad; que clase de doctor tu vas a hacer con ese afro (I'm in pre-med); pareces un delincuente". when I went to visit my dad back in DR he had the same reaction just A LOT more aggresive and confrontational, to the point he told me that he didnt want to be seen with me and my afro because he was "embarrased". it got so bad that I had to go stay at my aunts house cuz he wouldnt leave alone. and its just so fucking heart breaking to have the people you love the most put you down like that because of THE FUCKING GENES THEY PASSED DOWN TO YOU!! like I didnt ask for my hair to grow out in an amaizing afro, i got lucky!!! like can you let me love the body God (and you) gave me, just the way it is?? can you not decide my character based on the dead cells that grow out my scalp?? thank you

i agree with your father. it doesnt matter if you have coarse, thick, curly, straight hair or what have you. if it is unkempt, then it is unkempt and looks messy. you can definitely have an Afro or big curly hair and look clean and presentable. that's where i disagree with your dad. as a person with very coarse AND curly hair i can attest to the fact that is is a pain to deal with and it gets tangled up even if its short. and combing it is a nightmare. ive always tried to keep my hair short in a crew cut because it doesnt require any maintenance. i agree with embracing your hair and your body in general. but it irks me when people use it as an excuse to look messy.

Ike Arumba went through the same experience with my brothers when I became natural. Because I am the youngest and a woman my eldest become such bully towards me that I gave him and went back to relaxing. Worst decision I made. Did a big chop in July and starting again. But it’s hard when your own family tells you that no man will find you attractive with natural hair. But I felt the most beautiful and the most genuine with my Afro.

I got lucky and grew up with my Latina mother who taught me not to judge anyone because my family is Latino and is every color size and shape and I loved my cousins curly hair and I grew up loving natural hair that it was a shock as I grew up to find out having natural textured/curly hair was a negative. I looked at my stick straight hair and always envied natural hair and always wanted it and I look at this video and admire them and I am heart eyes over every ones hair 😍 keep on being beautiful and keep putting down that Latino saying of pelo malo

I am very torn about the term "afro-latino". I use it always in American context just because I think Americans can't understand my existence without it. But I hate American understanding of ancestry and race. It's so divided. In Puerto Rico our ancestors are Spanish Tainos and African. It doesn't matter what you look like or what your specific racial makeup is. You can be blonde with green eyes and freckles and have

AshleyLaGata i agree with you 100%. in Honduras most people have a little of everything, they are not stressed about putting labels. its inclusive not divisive. bc of the shared history being cathracho is said from my white blue eyed grandma, red skin indio uncle, and my black aunt. in the US this is almost unheard of and its annoying. can you imagine going to Puerto Rico and saying ...im afro latina ? lol they will look at you like "duh ...everyone is" lol

Puerto Ricans can be anti-black stop making it seem otherwise. Many Afro-Puerto Ricans have said this. They aren't violent like American whites but looking more white is ideal. If kinky/curly hair is pelo malo than blackness is not appreciated like you say.

You have some truth to what you say i cant deny it. But i stick to my views that there is alot of pride to latin americas black poplulation. It's neither of the two extremes is my point. Miss Honduras 2010, 2011, and 2012 is what i see. Sure theres room improvement but there needs to be more acknowledgment on the whole picture rather than just the one side that makes it onto youtube. ✌ just like you know some puerto ricans that are prejudice i know my family is a rainbow and are proud of it. Just made a comment but i like the dialogue haha

Melissa Hernández I totally agree with u aswell as AshleyLaGata..I'm a 12 year old girl in Canada who is Trinidadian and I know exactly where I'm from...mixed of Indian*(from India),African,Español,Carib and Italian...The Caribbean and South America is so diverse and similar that we have such a rich history...when I explain my full ethnicity my mom gets mad and says to say I'm trini but the Canadian/American society is what made me believe I have to classify as something and I hate that. I have a friend who thinks I show off that "I'm soo mixed" even tho he asks me to describe where I'm from.. he always says racist jokes about black ppl and always makes fun of me for not speaking a 2nd language but I hate having to explain England ruled over my country after Spain soo it'snot my fault and he thinks he has the right to tease me of rhis stuff becuz he knows 2 languages ..smh it's sad😢(he's Chinese)I just live how Puertorriqueños r so accepting of their black identity..

You can be mixed and have any hair type, it all depends on the which genes that you take from each parent, with curly hair (“4c” hair counts as curly) being the dominant gene. The whole concept of race is imaginary anyways, your genetic makeup is all based on your parents and grandparents genes

Thank u Lord for this video. This is a struggle. I'm Latino, (Colombian Venezuelan), but I have strong African roots due to my Venezuelan family comes from a palenque (an African town created by slaves who escaped from slavery back in the colonial ages). I got an afro and it is a gift to me. I took me several years to realize how amazing it is. The problem is that a lot of people think it is not good hair or that I should keep it really short. I hear all kind of jokes and sometimes people is offensive. I wish everyone could understand there's nothing wrong with the hair God gave me. It is my hair and I would keep it the way I like, the way it is.

We are Latinos. If we start going in this direction then we’ll have hundreds of affixes and it will break down our community, as we can see how the US is so divided with labeling everybody and it does nothing to create a strong national identity and culture. Sometimes I say that I’m indian (as in Amerindian) to show that I’m proud of my indigenous blood (in my particular case) and I’ll manifest that pride in other ways, but if I were to call myself Amerindian Latina then many that don’t share my ancestry will feel like they can’t relate to me, why would I want to do that? Those terms instantly create separation and mark differences. Politically here in the States we Must stand together as Latinos. TOGETHER we can address the issues of colorism in the media, we are already doing it. There are definitely issues of colorism in our Latino community but how exactly will adding an affix to Latino help? How how’s it helped minorities in the States?

most black ppl used relaxers and didn't know how to deal with relaxers bc we used white ppl products. so ofc some black ppl are gonna try to see if its fake. why are yall tryna act like yall are better in some way bc of ur long hair?

This is dope! I'm not Latino (I'm Haitian), and always was confused by the dissension Latin folks have with each other and the color of their skin/hair texture. This was awesome to watch.

+David Benoit The term Latin America is actually a French term written at a time to contrast Anglo-Saxon America (English and Dutch) versus areas influenced by Spain, Portugal and France. Over time, it has come to be used to reference only Spanish/Portuguese speaking Latin America. The Haitian connection to the rest of Latin America is undeniable in terms or food, music and culture. so be proud my friend, you are a LATINO too

iiMeziMouseii 14 Yeah Hati was revolutionary in terms of what they did for themeselves, the rest of the Caribbean and America by helping to end slavery (I'm Jamaican btw). The fact that the French put y'all in debt was bullsh*t. If anything they owe you reparations.

It sucks that people are telling us about our hair being pelo Malo but at the end of the day the hair is on our heads so who cares what they think! 😊

My hair is more similar to the guy with long hair when it gets long. I keep it short because many products don't work well with my hair type, or it leaves residue and it's nasty. This kinda makes me wanna try growing it out again and see happens.

Once in 7th grade 3 guys grabbed my hair to see if it was fake. People think I curl my hair everyday because my kind of curls are fake, nah they real. It's insane how people just go up to me and grab my hair and ask if it's a weave. But I love being afro Latino and wouldn't change that for anything.
