This is a full account of the July 29, 1966 coup in Nigeria, detailing how General J.T.U Aguiyi Ironsi was overthrown in a northern counter-coup. Ibadan! July 28, 1966, the situation was tense. Northern civil servants, chiefs, and traditional rulers who had traveled to the South for the Conference of Traditional Rulers were ready to leave, apprehensive of being targeted in the so-called "Plan 15" Igbo Plot.

The man I admired though out this is Left tennant colonel Fajuyi. The man could have abandoned Ironsi, but he remained loyal to the point of his death. Not many people would do that for a "guest". This is an excellent account, thank you.

In my country Liberia this scenario happened in the 80's and the military Head of state Samuel Doe removed Gen.Quiwonkpa as head of the army after suspecting him of being opposed to his leadership. Gen.Quiwonkpah was from Nimba and the president was from Grand Gedeh, they were best of friends though and joined the army at the same time. The lesson learned is that don't put your best friend in key military position.

A major arresting a supreme commander.? from the video I watched, I saw the C.I.C pleading with Danjuma... Instead, Gen. Ironsi supposed to have called his loyal forces to come to his rescue by attacking the mutiny solders. This shit couldn't have happened if he had his thoughts together. In my country Liberia leaders always have their tribal army to protect them. Why Gen Ironsi did not so the same?

Gen.Ironsi blundered to have a northerner as Chief of Army Staff Gen.Gowon who betrayed him and acted as if he was unaware of the counter-coup. Gen was told that there was a coup and he did not take it serious but was trying to reunify the country by appointing all tribes in the government as regional commanders even thoes opposed to him. Danjuma as a low ranking officer never acted alone. The lesson learned is that as an African president, always use your kinsmen as your personal security. Your own flesh and blood.

Yorubas are not different in anyway from the past, we are the most hospitable as far as Nigeria is concerned. Check the inflow of your people (Igbos) to Yoruba land compared to our people to your land. After Civil war, Yorubas kept and returned all your properties back to you despite all the betrayals that your people did to us.... I pray the ongoing court case as to your referendum be granted, so you can have your own Country/Republic in peace and allow us to have peace.

Yes, Fajuyi still an unsung hero but your question was answered by chain of events that followed. Col. Ojukwu ensured Obafemi Awolowo his friend was transferred to Calabar prison and subsequently released with expectation to speak against mass killing of Igbos. He rather accepted to serve as finance minister for Gowon. Same Awolowo advised Gowon to block food access to Biafrans and caused deaths in hundreds of thousands. "All is fair in war. You cant feed ur enemies fat and still expect to win".... they had to give away oil rich Bakassi peninsula to achieve this. After the war, same Ojukwu friend made sure every Igbo man got only 25pounds to restart life regardless of their status before. Indigenisation policy nko. Now you see.....

Yakubu Gowon, Danjuma both still alive today planned and executed the counter July 29, 1966 coup and caused the trouble that still is plaquing Nigeria till today. God in His magnanimity still preserved the lives as the most wicked men and deceitful soldiers Nigeria ever had then that failed to tell the truth. Gowon and his men did not preserve Nigeria but destroyed it because of their inordinate ambition revenge action to rule. Some of the men that caused Nigeria's present problems are dead but there will be no peace until the spirit of all who died during the wars/coupes have finished chasing those that are still alive today, including Yakubu Gowon, Yakubu Danjuma, Jeremiah Oseni until they confess. Yakubu Gowon, Yakubu Danjuma, Jeremiah Oseni, etc.; should bury their heads in shame. Power gotten through bullets and barrel of the guns does not last for ever, they must confess their roles so that Nigeria before them can continue after them. The history of Nigeria is way beyond this narrative. To understand where we are today interested people about how we came to the current situation, one has to go way back and understand the part the British played that gave birth to Nigeria and how the colonizing of Nigeria happened and the subsequent plans for neo-colonialism of Nigeria after the so called independence. The British structured Nigeria to make sure that power had to be dominated by the people they could still manipulate so that they could still indirectly keep looting Nigeria.

Easy to say.... But at the end of the day, the British took advantage of what is an already perceived tribalism (inbuilt) in our people. They used it to their own advantage because we let them. @@ElijahSir-gawi ironsi made so many mistakes. Some of them because it was the first experience, others because he was not smart enough (in my opinion). Since majority of those who carried out the coup were Igbos and Ironsi was Igbo, he would have prosecute them swiftly. But he failed to prosecute them. Following the part played by Easterners in the coup, it's only wise that Igbos would have done much more to rebuild trust, instead the civil war followed. As Nigerians, the unity and progress of this nation should be our collective interest and we should work collectively to archive that. Let's leave hate aside for Nigeria to move forward. My interest in our history is to educate and inform Nigerians, not to incite hate. Thank you guys for watching. 😍😍

The only history i took home here is that, Ironsi attitude to please the injured without coming out wholly to do it is the problem. With the mistake of ironsi no president will ever appoint a non tribal brother as his chief of staff or head of the Army. Buhari and Tinubu must have learnt a lot from that history of ironsi.

@@HispleMedia why is it a Northern counter coup? The statement smirks of an anti- Ibo or pro- Northerners bias. This is absolutely untrue. This is why I asked about the coup against Muritala. The intent of the bias is to spread and/justify discord in Nigeria more than 55 years later. Coups occurred in Nigeria irrespective of the region where the President or the military head of state came from. For the factors which may have led to the coup, read my earlier comment.

It was an iron n blood political game between lronsi n d North. But lronsi was too lethargic to anticipate d capacity revenge from d North for 6 whole months. N Fajuyi died for Ironsi n his race knowing that d future will respect him n his race. Thanks for your feedback... We are currently working on Ironsi and the Decree 34 that caused all the crisis that followed. Fajuyi is a hero. In general, how many Yorubas were involved in the coup or do you think only fajuyi would have switched sides and that is all? Well, from several sources including Danjuma himself, the young officers were officers were tasty for blood. Danjuma claimed that after arresting Ironsi, he lost control of the situation. So at the end of the day the boys did what pleases them. No one is painting any side good or bad. We are only telling the history from sources available to us. You and I were not there.
