My dad never used air bags on his off-road service truck for use in logging. He would take his truck to a custom leaf maker in Vallejo CA and had military wrap custom springs made to support his service body on all his trucks and I've even used Deaver springs to make my old Ford obs flex and have raptor travel with better ride around town with custom king coilovers in front but I've used the same corner weight measurement technique dad and the old guy in Vallejo did and I'll say I can tow 8000lbs with a 12" travel intact. My dad also swore by Sulastic mounts on the springs and Bilstein shocks to make the suspension smooth as a Cadillac around town.

Bit late to the party on this one, but FWIW, on Ram 3500's with factory air bags, they are placed exactly where the aftermarket kits place them. Right where the factory bump stops are. There is a plate welded to the axle that the bag mounts to (nearly identical to the one that bolts on if you install them yourself). The frames and axles are otherwise identical between leaf spring and air ride trucks. I get the point you're making here, but at least for Ram's, they ARE in fact designed to take the weight right there over the axle.

thats why when i used to make trucks into plow trucks we made sure they have not installed crappy airbag kits from ebay etc. some brand name companies like firestone and airlift sell massive steel frame reinforcement kits but they dont always advertise them on their website that will hold the plows and the sanders weight extremely well. we would take back of trucks down to frame and some of the kits we used were boxing in truck frame with 3/4 inch to 1 inch thick steel. yes these owners/operators could use a 5 ton by this time cost wise but 5 tons dont fit in alot of places they send the 1 tons into plow.

Yep, the kits that put the airbags at the rear in place of the springs solve that problem, but create another one for under bed wheel lift trucks. All of those kits require a track bar at the rear, but on these trucks the wheel lift is in the way of that

@Casey - That was by far the best job of explaining how leaf springs carry and split the load, especially in relation to the directional tension load being applied to the frame, that I have ever heard in my entire life. A life that includes beginning to work at my dad's wrecking yard when I was 12 yrs old that enabled me to buy and build my first car before I was 15 forcing me to stare at it in the back driveway for a year and get in trouble for doing burn outs😂 The point being we sold lots of springs and there were plenty of conversations but nobody said it as well as you just did my friend.😉👊😎 Since I mentioned It, the car was a Black w/white striped R/T 76' Aspen with a rebuilt/bored out 340 out of a 68' Challenger and in spite of how great & durable the 727 Torqueflite was/is & will always be, I wanted & went with manual Hurst linkage & added a Tac to assert more fun & control over the 3.73 power-lock posi differential while looking good rolling on 15x10" deep dish rear & 14x6 front Chrome Cragar's. And of course with Judas Priest being my favorite band my pride n joy was the loud auto-reverse Pioneer tape deck w/amp & boom box speaker.🥰....that unfortunately required me to start the car every 30 minutes when I was jamming tunes....lol It was plenty quick for a first car, but it wasn't long before I wanted big block power. Unfortunately, I got rear ended within site of the Portland Coliseum with 5th row tickets on my way to see David Lee Roth - "Eat em & Smile" & Cinderella and the car was totaled. Ended up walking with my two buddies from the wreck the rest of the way to the concert and got lucky right before we entered the building and ran into a couple of ladies who had borrowed their dad's Cadilac that were also from Albany where we all lived that then met us after the concert and gave us all a ride home....so no worries during the great show. I remember they even had a cooler full of Bartel's wine coolers we drank on the eay home...they were a thing in the late 80's...lol

The way you are describing airbags is not how I'm used to seeing them. I'm in Europe, so that might be why, but the airbags on my truck are mounted on the frame in front of the axle and is then connected to the axle by a thick leaf spring cut in half that then mounts to the frame behind the axle. So that would more or less use the same mounting area. I've also just seen pictures of campers that have airbags help their regular leafsprings with the load. Anyway, I've recently discovered your channel and have been binge watching it ever since, its a great look into what is for me a completely different world. really enjoying the content!

Yes, we have that style air suspension here as well. But that style requires the use of a track bar to keep the axle center, and the wheel lift on a truck like this is in the way of a track bar

Good explanation on how air bags affect the frame under different loads
@alvinmitchell67992 жыл бұрын
From a Statics and Dynamics point the airbag in the center of the leaf spring offsets the forces from the leaf mounts. Having the mounts fixed where they are creates a moment around the center of the leaf that cause the forces to torque the frame towards the axle. Mounting an airbag using the goose neck mount would help bridge the forces along the frame if you are worried about the bending. If you look the older Toyota frames and bodies you should notice that they do not have the same gap between the bed and cab like any US truck does. This is because the older Toyota frames are designed not to flex as much.

Kelderman air ride has an air bag system that replaced the rear shackle connection point on the leaf spring at back of vehicle. Will give some height adjustment, makes smoother ride and will lift under load. Biggest issue is crossbar to connect both sides together with wheel lift in the way.
@phillip.95243 жыл бұрын
Casey very sound logic. People do not understand that by fitting air bags directly above the axel that they are now just using the front leaf spring mount as the fulcrum point. The rear spring mount is flexible and once the spring is under load it elongates i.e flattens and pushes the hanger back. The bed of the truck/pickup with load will use that point to bend the frame. I love the fact people are saying that they have been doing this and that for years but still do not understand basic engineering.

I ran a sneaker wheel lift with air bags on a 1994 Chevy 2500 for 30 years. Never cracked a frame and loaded the crap out of it. All you have to do is put a simple outer v-plate that goes from spring point to point. I added a extra spring to the factory set, then had overloads as well. That was the most comfortable ride with that extra weight from the wheel lift. Air bags will crack chassis on any set up if they're installed wrong. When Firestone Airbags we're becoming popular they actually installed them on Sneaker set ups back then. The trucks today definitely have questionable strength when it comes to adding things to them. Nevertheless, good video...

That's exactly what I said. You have to make it so the force from the airbag is going to the spring points, not to the frame straight above the axle with no additional support

That was a very interesting lesson in mechanical engineering and automotive design! I've studied both in a previous life, but never came across this wheel lift issue (they're not very common around here) On my 4x4 stationwagon, I have done something similar. I added extra springs inside the standard springs in the back, which will only work once the back gets pushed down far enough to involve the extra springs, they add stiffness. Did that to be able to put a tow hook box on the back without it starting to scratch the ground every time I drive over a speed bump. Thank you!

Air bags are mounted for helping leveling, not for carrying the whole weight, so the 20-25% of the load supported by the frame over the axle is not breaking load. I had air bags on 3 trucks, where F450 was carrying 10,000 lb loads and air bags lifting 5000 lb at max pressure worked just fine. If you remember old El Caminos? They come with air adjustable shocks from the factory. No truck frame is design to carry sneaker lift, yet we see it

I had my Megacab stretched to a long bed and put a 4 link air ride Kelderman system installed. I worry about the extended leverage on the rear hitch because of the removal of the rear leaf spring mount from the 4 link. The frame stretch was done over the axel so it is more stout than the factory frame and sleeved into the original frame. I don't tow heavy heavy with a bumper pull hitch but I am still tempted on plating the frame behind the axel to add some support just in case I need to at some point.

Well you look at how the shocks are mounted in the rear of trucks, at that angle from the axle to the frame at that angle. If used hydraulic pistons instead of rear shocks it would stiffen everything up solid until it shatters the axles/ diff.

factory airbag trucks use the same frame with extra brackets, welded in the same “flawed” location. The frame is plenty strong for airbags in the middle, dodge already calculated for that…
@CaseyLaDelle3 жыл бұрын
But they never calculated for a wheel lift hanging off the back. Hence, "tow truck frames" in the title of the video...

You know they make airbag systems for the rear springs mounting points
@CaseyLaDelle3 жыл бұрын
Yes they do, and those systems require a track bar to be put in to keep the rear axle in place. Buuuuutt a track bar can't be used on these trucks without some serious custom fabrication because the wheel lift is in the way of where it needs to to go.

Is there a particular reason why you decided on Hankooks? Did you have Sailun s740s on your F350?
@CaseyLaDelle3 жыл бұрын
I really likes the Sailun's, but they aren't available in this size. The decision to go with the Hankooks was easy, because they were the only snow rated tire in this size that anyone had available.

@@CaseyLaDelle Fair enough 😀 By the by; You've inspired me to put Sailuns on my F350 😁 Offset is 💯on your Dodge 👏

@@AaronCPalmer I've ran Sailun's on that red truck, as well as my heavy haul trucks and trailers. In the heavy duty category there isn't a better tire out there for the money

Not sure I've ever seen the frame break from air bags?, the Ford's and Dodge's rip the bracket off of the frame and the Chevy's mash the bracket around the axle. How is the balance on those 19.5's?, every time they come in the shop to get balanced it's a serious PAIN! to get them right!??
