Putting tracks on a Jeep causes injury in the shop. The dangers of working alone..

Lesson number one, always keep your phone in your pocket when doing something dumb. I put American Truck Tracks on my Jeep Grand Cherokee off road recovery rig in preparation for winter time and snow recuses, but had a little mishap while trying to realign one of the tracks. I guess it's time for me to buy an actual jack extension instead of stacking wood blocks...

I have a great neighbor I can call when I am going to do something stupid (which is somewhat frequently) and ask him if he wouldn't mind coming over and watching me do that something stupid. He is more than happy to oblige. He's an EMT too. Sometimes he offers alternatives to my initial plan. Sometimes I listen. Sometimes I don't. So far, so good. I still have all my initial parts, and for the most part, still work as expected.

Casey, glad your foot isn't too bad. When I first saw that floor jack, I was looking for the jack stands. For heavens sake get a set or use wood blocks under the frame when working like that. I had a friend who was seriously hurt when his car fell off a floor jack. He learned his lesson real quick. Spent a month in the hospital and rehab after that. Jeep looks cool though.

Yep. Unless there's an emergency, jacks are for lifting only. Jack stands go under before people go under. Jack stands are akin to any other essential PPE (eye protection, face shields, earmuffs, welding helmets,, chainsaw chaps, etc.).

I like how these are a bolt-on set that you can use on different vehicles if you need to, and you can store them for most of the year without having to maintain them, compared to a dedicated vehicle if you aren't using it year-round. Versatility is king especially if you do different things all the time, which it seems like you do. Can't wait to see these tracks put to use in the snow soon!

I'd rather use large chunks of 4x2 or 6x6 timber than any axle stand. A foot long pice of timber is lot more stable then any axle stand.

Thank you Thank you Thank you! You are my go to guy for fear deflection for my wife now. Few months ago I too had an alone in the shop incident where I found my self in a pickle of a predicament. I also made the mistake of calling my wife who was shopping at the time but only after I had called a friend who was not answering his phone at the time. She was too long out so I ended up calling 9-1-1 and gave the 1st responders one hell of a laugh. (Note; I had my phone in my pocket luckily!) When she got home the Ambulance crew was coming out of the shop with an empty gurney and she was sure it was because I was dead. Sorry Babe, my bad. But she is still reluctant to trust me to work in the shop now. So she insists if I am doing something with jacks or lifts that she be present. Hope this fear passes quickly. So now I can say Oh yeah, but Casey .. .. .. .. LoL!

Not with a floor jack. The way it articulates the jack has to roll or the jeep. This is part of the reason for using jack stands before you get rough with the vehicle.

As to your oopsie, a set of Jack stands would have prevented that. 40 years ago when I was a kid, guy got crushed(he survived but was messed up) at a local car towing and repair place. A day later dad had 4 jack stands. Always used them since, even on my 600lb golf cart.

@@masondegaulle5731 Jack stands really are life savers. Even the recalled harbor freight ones probably saved more lives than they failed for. I'm not a big safety nerd like "you're not wearing safety goggles while sanding" but seriously, frickin jack stands take like 10 seconds to push under and lift up. You lower the jack and it's not going anywhere. Of course we got to see Casey's gorgeous wife, so I guess it's a win in that fashion :)

Yes, jack stands are THE lesson of this video!!! I used to crawl under cars all the time, but would never go under that 2 tons of metal before securely mounting the car on at least two if not four stands.

True story, my dad was, a patient of his got bit on the foot by a snake and he cut is foot off fearing he was going to die. Brought the foot and himself to our house to get fixed... He lived sans foot. Great video Casey. Love the Jeep stuff.

When I work on a vehicle alone, I always use 2 or more jack stands to prevent a mishap from happening. Safety is job 1.. Glad you didn't get hurt, Casey.

You will love them. I have them for ATVs. Must run in low to not burn belts and they can NOT go everywhere snowmobile goes to heavy. Extremely fun.

Brings to mind the time I was laying under a 1971 mercury capri trying to get the v-6 engine back on the motor mounts and the blocks tipped over, leaving me bench pressing the motor to keep it off my chest. I couldn’t let go of it and couldn’t get it anywhere near the mounts without the blocks taking some of the weight. My girlfriend was upstairs in the split level house and couldn’t hear me yelling. A half hour later she happened to come down stairs to do some laundry and finally heard me. Talked her through hooking up the engine hoist again and finally made it out.

Harbor freight sells a cross beam attachment for jacks, gives two points to lift from and adjust height and width.

Been there, done that. Back about 15 years ago I was helping a friend put a lift kit on his super duty under a shed on his dads farm. He had the rear axle on jack stands and he was cranking on the rear ubolts to loosen them. All of the sudden the jack stand sank into the diesel soaked asphalt floor and dudes foot was pinned under the rear brake disc. He ended up alright, but 2am trips to the ER are the best!

I stack blocks on my HF jack all the time, it is always sketchy, I also need to get an extension. I think the jeep is going to do great in the snow. The deep stuff wont be a problem with that light weight rig and all that surface area on the tracks....but when you do find the limit and get it stuck, you will have a great reason to buy a snow cat! Nice shop!

Very curious to see how the tracks work out, they certainly look bad ass. Went on a snowmobiling trip to Yellowstone several years ago and there was all kinds of super cool tracked vehicles driving around. During the winter any vehicles that travel inside the park itself were required to be on tracks of some type. The people in our group were all excited about seeing and taking pictures of the wildlife and various geological/thermal features where I was more enamored with all the different tracked vehicles. I highly suggest everyone visit the Yellowstone area in winter at least once in their life. It’s absolutely amazing!!!

It was for guys just like you and me that OSHA was formed! Glad you are OK. When working alone always remember, think twice what you can do if something falls on you! Then put in safety catched to take the load instead of you. The old tires lying on their side two high may have saved you some pain, both physical and wife mental! LOL! Whenever working alone, I let one person know what I'm up to and they keep checking especially when I'm under the vehicle. Good to know that you are safe, and a composite toe boots would be best, light weight and safer.

I remember back in the early 70's, an ambulance call I went out on involved a young man crushed under his car that he had up on the old bumper jack that kicked out. He lived but had broken ribs and a punctured lung. He then got pneumonia and spent a while in the hospital. Be careful cause you have a lot to live for!

Jack from under the springs not under the diff.That way, you have the resistance of the opposite tire/track on the ground to help this from happening. Using jack stands would also help to prevent this. Use cribbing under the jack instead of blocks on top of it. This would take extra time but less time and pain than a injured foot. Stay safe!

A floor jack needs to roll under the load as the lift point changes. They can't move on wood making it even more unstable. Putting it on cribbed jackstands is mostly safe if all corners of the stand are equally supported.

I just found your KZbin channel so I don't know what kind of other upgrades you've done to your rig but one thing I remember from watching others putting tracks on their rigs is that you really need to beef up every piece of hardware relating to your stearing. Turning the tracks if they end up in deep mud or snow will take a whole lot more doing than turning any size wheels! So for your sake I hope you have had this in mind and don't get yourself stranded with boiling powerstearingfluids or worse, like blown hoses, fittings or any other major part that can't be fixed on the side of the road or out in the wild... Other than that, it sure looks killer and like a really sweet recovery rig. I'll be sure to tag along and have now subscribed for your new content 🙂

I like that you use harbor freight tools and don't mind talking about them. Several years ago a friend of mine asked me why I use such a low quality tool brand to which I responded by regaling him with the following story. I was doing some work on my 97 F250 and snapped the breaker bar I was using. Thinking I had purchased it at harbor freight I took it there to get a warranty replacement. The employee I spoke with showed me that the tool had in fact never been sold there but in the same breath told me they would honor the warranty anyway and gave me a new one. Since then if I need a tool the only reason for not buying it there is if they don't have it. Any tool is only as good as it's warranty so as far as I'm concerned harbor freight tools are just as good as any other brand and in some circumstances better.

One of our 24 Hours of LeMons team members is a retired trauma surgeon and typically he treated 3-5 injuries a year of men that have dropped vehicles on themselves. Many times he learned that he wife would discover them when they did not show up for dinner, bed, etc. he would hear reports of men that did not make to the ER. So dam you seem like a nice person so do your best to stick around and make / get some proper high lift supports.

Never use a hydraulic floor jack as your primary support, too many things can go wrong. Use jackstands , wood or steel cribbing as primary support and use the floor jack as a secondary safety backup. Also always use wheel chocks. It is tempting to cut corners, but the risk can be fatal, especially working under the vehicle.

Joey Gandy suggested roses for your wife. That may not be a bad idea, but maybe invest in a decent set of Jack Stands to put under your work to prevent it from falling on you. Then make sure you use them, even for really quick jobs. If you do the need to be rescued should drastically reduced. Also investing in a bigger jack so you don't need to stack wood blocks on it so you can even begin lifting the vehicle is a pretty shaky setup to begin with.

I was setting an old travel trailer up on blocks a couple years ago and the jack slipped right as I was putting a piece of wood on top of the block... Smashed/pinned 2 of my fingers and it was NOT pleasant... My wife (thankfully) heard me scream (like a little girl, lol) and came and was able to lift it after repositioning the jack.. Came very close to cutting the tips of 2 fingers off!

I was putting a speedometer cable in my 73 scout many years ago, before cellphones. I got my arm contorted in the dash and had trouble getting it back out. I started thinking about how long it might take someone to find me but I was able to extricate myself. Now that I'm old, I have my cell phone on a lanyard around my neck, if I remember to take it with me.

I had a jack that was apparently slowly lowering as I was under the front of a car working on an exhaust heat shield. I didn't realize it until the skid plate was pressing pretty firmly on my chest. I was alone is a shop that was well away from the house where anyone was. I was lucky enough that I could get my legs / feet on the jack handle and was able to jack it back up off of me. Lets say I don't often get under a vehicle without a jack stand after that one.

No, lesson number two is…. DONT STACK BLOCKS ON THE JACK AT ALL! Always secure a vehicle on jack stands. Use proper equipment and LIVE. For about $250 you can have the truck floor jack, long and heavy, but it lifts over 2 feet high. Bought mine 15 years ago from HF, love it.

I have a Polaris Ranger which I have been researching the possibility of putting it on tracks? I asked what stops the tracks from spinning upside down ramming into the body? They showed me some cables & bars that bolt under body from the tracks which prevent them from rotating. Now my question for you is? What is stopping the tracks on your Jeep from rotating into the Jeep body? I didn’t see any cables or ? preventing total rotation? Granted you would have to run off a large rock or hit something under powder snow forcing the track rearward making it rotate the complete track assembly!

Nothing, they can absolutely spin around into the body. If I were running standard length tracks that would be much more of a concern, but I'm running an extended version that help alleviate that problem. But that extended length is also why I had so much more problems with my steering than most people do.

Ummmmmm well your not exactly alone. I have a dodge Durango on trax and ill say this. I kind of done the same thing except I broke three bones in my foot. Yeah it hurts. But now I have a huge Durango that will go anywhere. I have a 4" body lift and a 6" suspension which gives me a 28" clearence from bottom of pumpkin. Have fun i know I do

Mr. Casey, can I recommend a different way to us the wooden blocks…? Use the blocks as a base to put the jack on instead of the way you did it with the blocks on the jack, much, much safer, and using jack stands also helps mitigate injuries to yourself and the vehicle. It’s called cribbing, I know you have heard and used the term before…and seeing how you will be taking them off and on every so often, create a groove for the jack wheels to rest in which will not allow it to slide off the blocks. On a lighter note the Jeep looks good and can’t wait to see it in action..

I will tell you about something that happened to me. I was mid 20s, and I was a heavy equipment mechanic for a logging company. My 1960 Oldsmobile had a vibration, so was going to check the center carrier bearing of the drive line. I drove it up on blocks to get under it, and blocked it so that it could not roll further forward. I did not do ANYTHING to prevent it from rolling backward. The only thing holding it up there was the transmission in park. I then crawl under the car, and pull the driveline off of the differential. The car immediately started rolling back down the ramps. I did have enough presence of mind to turn over on my back. The frame went across my stomach. If it had went across my chest it would have killed me. I could just barely breathe. My 6 year old was playing in the front yard. Since I almost could not breathe, I could barely talk. He finally got close enough and I told him to go get his Mother. She was across the street at my Mother's house. I could see her just moseying across the street, and when she got close enough I told her to get this thing off of me. She yelled at my Mother to come over. All that they had to raise the car up was the factory bumper jack used to change a tire. They would jack a little, and then block it, jack a little and then block. These 2 house wives had way more common sense than me at this point. This happened almost 50 years ago, and I remember the feeling that I had when this happened. EVERY time I crawl under something, I think about that incident. Very seldom in this world are we given a second chance. I am soooooo lucky.

I've done major service to a push type lawnmower today, major cleaning all around, oil change, air filter, some disassembly. Managed not to drop it onto my foot ;-p

A lesson learned was a friend named Randy was under his truck and the air line to the air bag gave way. The truck came down on his chest and killed him. Never get under a vehicle that is just on a jack. Stand. Can save your life.

Yep your fortunate. LegArms Welker was using same technique, but draw bar off tractor fell compound fractured arm crushed actually. Put him in hp. Work safer. Yes jack in big wide strong timbers be better. Tracks look awesome

ya i've been in that position, dropped a car off a jack onto foot, didn't get hurt foot was in the right place to not be hurt but also couldn't get it out and had to wait for cute neighbor to head out (30 min or so) for my rescue you will like tracks as long as you have front and rear lockers
