In other words, airlines price their tickets for as high as people are willing to pay. That's why ticket prices flying between two major cities with a lot of business travelers like from Singapore to London, and vice-versa, tend to be very expensive especially for First and Business class tickets.

Interesting topic, especially when you know the airlines doesn't even know that. They have to employ third parties company to retrieve their prices since their algorithm to compute the prices is too complex. I know that since I made an internship in one of those company
@MrCherianBiju4 жыл бұрын
The 3rd party application providers provide those services much more efficiently, using their large software platforms and airlines need not focus on pricing. This could be a reason. It is not possible to fix prices manually in highly completive, dynamic market conditions It is almost like a stock market where different share prices keep going up and down based on many factors - within a day to across the year
@johniii81473 жыл бұрын
Incorrect. Airlines "know". They purchase 3rd party software and services, as does any company. The airlines have dedicated departments to managing revenue management. The software is just a tool for the airline and they own all the data that they use to determine pricing and availability.
@caciliawhy51955 жыл бұрын
It also depends on where you buy your ticket at. on Norwegian they have three options for English: American English, British English, and all other English. You can save up to $40 to $50 a ticket if you go to other English, but you're still buying from the same airport to the same airport.
@BenMarvin7 жыл бұрын
So just buy a round trip ticket to London, stay as long as you want, then buy another round trip ticket to go home. Still cheaper.
@SuperSmashDolls7 жыл бұрын
And then get stranded in London as the airline refuses to honor your fare code because you haven't proven that you meet the minimum-stay requirement. Since you didn't show up to board the first leg of the flight, you haven't met the requirements of the fare code, since they have no proof that you stayed a Sunday. Buying and flying that round-trip ticket is their proof that you are a tourist and not a businessperson. I suppose you could get around this by buying the opposite city pair in the middle of your trip. That is, buy JFK-LHR roundtrip for Monday and next next Friday; then LHR-JFK roundtrip for Friday and next next Monday. I don't know if this is possible or even legal; at the very least customs might harass you for trying to enter the country without a return flight or a long-term stay visa. I haven't flown commercially so I don't know if customs talks to airlines' booking departments or not. If they did, then this plan wouldn't work. Furthermore, the ticket restriction is on minimum stay - you don't need to link two round-trip fares to get a longer stay, they'll honor the cheaper fair code for a long stay. Maximum stay requirements do exist, but they're usually for absurdly long periods of time where you'd need a long-term stay visa anyway.
@shinigami0527 жыл бұрын
Are there legal requirements that you MUST take the flight you paid for? I'm pretty sure you can't be arrested for not getting on an airplane (unless for other reasons like Visa expiration, etc).

You can't get arrested for not taking the first leg, but if you pause the video at 8:43, you'll see this fun little sentence: "THE TICKET IS INVALID IF FLIGHT COUPONS ARE NOT USED IN SEQUENCE". That means if you aren't physically present at the airport and board the first leg of your flight, then you lose the second leg of your flight. You won't be arrested for missing that first flight (unless doing so would cause you to overstay a visa) but they won't let you board the second.

For my free flights i get by working for an airline it only really costs the airline around $3 for me to fill the seat including drinks and all that extra stuff so think about that. Next maybe do a video to see the average cost to an airline per seat/person

Their algorithms are more complex than that these days. Besides, their webservers can see what IP's are looking at what and when. It already knows what your IP looked at.... The servers remember the mere fact that someone, anybody, looked at a given flight or route. If there are tons of requests for a price on a given route, they remember that and prices are adjusted accordingly. Amazon's algorithms include similar methods. If 20000 people suddenly look at a given item in a short time, it raises the price. If you go back to look a month or two later, the price will be back down. Sometimes you can get the price down by connecting in from a different computer or location, but ther'es no guarantee.

For that I get upgrades, lounge access, Economy Plus seating, and free baggage allowance. People who actually travel often know the dragging off story is a one time thing. Every airline gets people who say "they would rather fly with anyone but them". That is until that airline has the cheapest price again...
@legalizebuckets5945 жыл бұрын
@@drunkrussianisgood I had friends who flown united and they always say its not great. Their service sucks, and overall the reputation for the airline is still bad ever since they dragged a passenger off a flight. Even my dad who flown united couple times and is a business traveler can agree that united is bad. I've heard good things about Delta and that too their service as well as their reputation as a whole is better than United. Comparing United's lounges and upgrades, in terms of US based carriers Delta is better, but Asian and some European carriers are far better.

@@legalizebuckets594 oh I agree that they're inferior to Asian/European airlines in most ways. But when comparing to US airlines, I don't find United much better or worse than the others for the average traveller, and they get shit on unnecessarily by people who don't really know much about air travel. It's also funny because most people in reality choose on price alone, and will literally fly anyone to save a dollar. So it's all talk and no action anyways.

@KaiserTom7 жыл бұрын
Airports are fixed in their size; they have an inelastic supply. They can grow over time but usually much slower than demand. As a result, airports can charge higher and higher fees and still have demand equal to their supply. This is much like concerts or sporting events or amusement parks; these places are only so big and expanding them requires more land. If you have 1,000 seats to fill and 10,000 people are willing to pay $50 for those seats, it is in your best interest to raise prices until the amount of people willing to pay that price equals the amount of seats you have.

Story of George Flights from UK airports excluding Northern Ireland are subject to the Air Passenger Duty (APD) tax. The UK’s APD is much higher than the equivalent taxes in any other country. But it’s only charged on flights originating in the UK, not connecting through the UK. This is why you’ll see flights connecting through London for cheaper. Of course long haul direct flights also come at a premium.

David Zhou What you said about US to Africa and vise versa is most likely true, but when it comes to flights around Africa, I don't think that's the case. There are many airlines, both regular and budget that operate flights, so there is competition.
@jasimzoobi23407 жыл бұрын
mizzy mauri I think Ethiopian is one of the best in Africa, maybe you had a one-off bad experience. Their service is decent and their aircraft is new (they have an Airbus A350 but I don't think it flies in and around Africa). Other companies have aircraft that are at least 10 to 15 years old and simple things like seat recline and headphone jacks don't work. Not to forget the bad in-flight entertainment while still being around $1000 for a flight from Dakar to Accra (not even direct).
@MichaelGGarry7 жыл бұрын
But there often isn't non-flight competition, ie the roads and rail are bad enough to put people off using them, or the distances are too long. Then you get into price-matching as mentioned in the video.

One of my friends is slowly teaching me how to game the system. From what I understand, he makes purchases with Amex, which he can then redeem for British Airways points. The British Airways redemption scheme happens to have a sweet spot that allows him to fly along the east coast of Australia (where we both live), for dirt cheap prices. Effectively, he flies business class for $30 more than economy on a Sydney to Brisbane or Melbourne trip, and vice versa. If he wanted to do Sydney to Perth, outside of BA’s redemption sweet spot, he’d use his Alaska Airlines points, redeemed the same way, to the same effect. Long and the short of it is that my friend has worked out the system enough that he can fly whenever he wants (booking flights a few days not weeks in advance), and flies business class for about 30 bucks more, and has all the business lounge perks (unlimited free drinks, food, etc). He flew me up to Cairns, a 3 hour flight, and rented a car, for a week, and had me drive him around, because he hasn’t got a license or car, because it was cheaper and he wanted to see the sights. *i literally got a free holiday and got to drive around for a week doing whatever we wanted, because he worked out that this was cheaper than Ubering everywhere* ...he’s really got all this worked out. It’s mesmerising.

It actually sounds like it completely screws over the small businessman. If you don't work for a large company that can easily afford paying these fares for many of their employees(It's still expensive), travel will be a very serious cost for your business. I know there can't be that many cases like this, but this "We make you pay what we think you can based on these assumptions." strategy definitely screws someone over.
@ajohnson96306 жыл бұрын
Not really. They simply find the exact balance to get everyone's business. That is the beauty of capitalism. What actually happens is not that the small business man gets screwed, but rather the big company springs for business class because they can afford it. I work for a smaller company and travel a lot for them as well as know people in large companies who travel for them. Do the research before you say it sounds bad. It's simply business as it should happen.

"it wouldn't make any sense for anyone to fly a budget airline like WestJet over Air Canada" oh, how wrong you are... I have never had a problem flying WestJet, and I've never been on an air Canada flight that hasn't had an issue.

West Jet are a CON... Using old B.767s, plus most worn out dangerous B.737s From Toronto - to London (Gatwick).. Air Transat are way ahead + cheaper on this journey... 23kg luggage + free meals in economy

What is the difference between price matching and a cartel from a legal standpoint?
@varana7 жыл бұрын
In a cartel, prices are mutually agreed upon beforehand. In price matching, it happens after the fact, i.e. all sellers adjust their prices to those of the competition. Nothing actually stops e.g. Delta from going lower - except the knowledge that if they did this, it would lead to a race to the bottom that isn't in their interest. Therefore, prices balance out at a relatively low level that is acceptable to all participants. At least in theory. In practice, the line is quite thin. To fall under anti-trust law, it'd have to be proven that they mutually fixed those prices in advance, and that's often not easy to do.
@themagpie9able7 жыл бұрын
varana312 That makes sense. Thanks :)
@Sebotway6 жыл бұрын
Exactly what varana said, there's a very grey area between price matching and collusion (which is illegal). However, it's never easy to accuse companies, especially in a market with such high barriers to entry like the airplane industry, of collusion. At some point or another it's always going to end up looking like collusion in one way or another, because (and this is the exact reason why it's illegal) companies need to find out the maximum point at which customers will pay within the margins of what they should be charging for lower demand flights, like Wendover explained.
