As a South-American who has recently been in the US, I think another reason for airlines to fly at night is that a lot of business passengers don't want to miss a whole working day flying (and therefore prefer night flights)

I love the west to east overnight flight when I go from Oregon home to Florida. Is like I get one more full day to spend with my friend, then I fly overnight, sleep easily, then wake up in the morning, quickly connect my flight, then get home usually around 10-11am, still having a day to do stuff at home with minimal jet lag.

I actually love having long layovers in bigger airports. I like being able to explore the different areas and it gives me time to relax. My favorite thing to do when I was in Houston and Chicago airports was to ride the trams to the different areas and see what they all had to offer. It's a very interesting experience.

They can safely fly that long for two reasons: Extremely strict safety in general and - most importantly - the mandatory safety checks: A, B, C and D. In the latter, the whole plane is pretty much taken apart. Everything down to rivets is checked and replaced if necessary. The parts of the aircraft that is under the most stress are also checked for metal fatigue. In the C check, it’s gutted and obviously B and A are smaller checks. Things like engines, tires and cockpit windows are replaced independently of the service checks. Regardless, it really is impressive.

If gates were no longer "owned" by airlines, but instead rented by the hour/day on a bidding system, then we could get rid of some of the hub and spoke system and move to smaller planes flying more direct routes... I live in Dallas, the fact is if you want to fly anywhere, odds are it will be on American. Yes, other airlines fly here, but the schedules and choices are poor compared to American which controls the majority of gates at the airport. Likewise, live in Atlanta and Delta just became your new best friend! Remove that control and open the airports up and we could get a better system...

Banked hubs are actually not all that different from what the Swiss federal railways do for their trains... Only that the Swiss system does not waste hours, but only has the trains sitting in the hub for a few minutes... Maybe you should do a video on that some time... Or maybe one on "Why are trains so great in Switzerland". I know they're not high speed, but a lot of the important stuff is not all that sexy at first glance. Just like lie-flat beds beat the Concorde...

it would be interesting to note, too, that EDDF won the 2016 Global Hub Connectivity Ranking conducted by hte ACI with 69.000 points. In fact, considering the top 10 of the ranking, half of the "best connecting airports" are located in central europe. Altough this ranking is not limited by the connectivity offered by individual airlines but rather by all airlines combined, I still thought it worth mentioning. Regarding your point about the saudi arabic airlines, I was utterly bewildered when I flew to HKG over Doha with Qatar airlines a few months back. It appeared as if their entire fleet had been retired to catch dust at the airport. I watched from the waiting area during layover the arrival of a Lufthansa aircraft and its timely departure while all other aircraft surrounding it stood still ...

When his camera goes through the X-Ray in the ad at the end, you can see the X-Ray-induced noise in the footage. Really neat :) (or at least that’s what it looks like)

I scrolled down until I found your comment. That's definitely radiation hitting the photosensitive sensors on the camera. Good eye.

I think that a good subject to focus on would be the hubs in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha that together with the availability of giant A-380 planes have made travelling to Asia cheaper and more convenient.

You should look at the schedule for ASKY Airlines based out of Lome, Togo. It is a version of the bank/scissor system on overdrive because the airline only has 8 planes. It's a really impressive network they've built that basically leaves no passengers stranded in Togo but connects all of West Africa, a notoriously difficult place for an airline to operate.

I'm stunned. Actually a factual, non-hysterical, non-hateful explanation about the difficulties of transporting millions of people. OUTSTANDING!!!

Honestly love your channel... you take a potential boring subject and make it interesting and informative. Last week I traveled buffalo-> Newark -> Seattle then a red eye Seattle -> Chicago -> buffalo and it blew but it gave me some insight on why it sucked 😂
