Everything he's saying is 100% true. I was an alcoholic for a few years. I got sick, like bad sick, and went to the ER. They found that my entire system was in freefall and admitted me to the ICU. I died and was brought back. I stopped drinking cold turkey after that and honestly the first few months were devastating. I had to find new hobbies and coping mechanisms to get through it and I've been sober for over a year and a half and I dont miss it or even feel tempted by it. If anyone is where I was, take this or leave it, I'm not your mother, but once you cut out the drinking life will get unimaginably worse. Depression, anxiety, for me even suicidal thoughts at times, but all of that shit is temporary. You'll wake up one day, cant tell you exactly when, but all of the sudden when you're just be going about your day you'll realize, "Holy shit. I'm like, actually happy right now, and I'm kind of excited to just be here". Life is still hard at times, you'll get sad, hurt, anxious and even depressed, but when you're not trying to self medicate those times are fleeting and life becomes something that you *want* to do, not something you *have* to do But hey, I'm just some schmuck on the internet, so what do I know. good luck yall

My step dad would come home every night drunk , then proceeded to be an asshole to everyone in the house, no violence just really shitty verbal abuse, I learned later when I was an adult that my mom only put up with it because of us kids, my step-dad himself told me that after us kids had moved out that one night she was waiting for him at the kitchen table, he came home drunk about 8 from the club as usual, she then told him it was the club and drinking or her , she was going to leave, that was the night he decided no more Club and cut way back on the drinking, I noticed a 180 on his attitude towards everyone , he would come home at 4 when he got out of work, he would only have like one or two beers, not the 12 he used to have and turn into an instant asshole, I'm glad my mom had the strength to tell him that because we got to enjoy the last eight years of his life with him being the nice guy that he always was, the alcohol is what always brought out the bad part of him

Alcohol let are emotions out. Or the things we've been true. I never wanted to drink because i always felt bad. I thought it was the alcohol. Therapie did the same thing as alcohol. Most population can't drink in moderation . I stopped drinking because I couldn't control it. I didn't like being drunk although I drunk rarelly . I thought if I can't drink in moderation it's better to not drink at all . My father was alcoholic through most of his live and i always had this of the back of my head how easy you can become alcoholic.it's been 5 years when I stopped it was good decision . I wasn't alcoholic but even drinking rarely ( binge )destroys mental health . I see big difference

When my dad died from COVID, I slipped into a dark path towards alcoholism. I stopped drinking on New Years and I lost weight, my skin cleared SOOO much and I did drink once this year but I had two shots and I just didn’t like the feeling of not being in control. I left the party early that night because I came to realize that I hate drinking even just for a night. Staying sober from alcohol opens your life up to new perspectives oftentimes for the better

@@code8217 Everyone speaks from their experience, so I respect why you think the way you do. For me, I've been in AA for many years and I've spoken one on one with hundreds of addicts about their addiction and almost all ones like me who quit later in life always have guilt for not quitting sooner. I'm 41 with 3 years sober, that's good but also pathetic, if you quit right now, I promise you, by the time your my age you will have WAY less guilt and feel pretty damn good about yourself knowing you had the wisdom to quit so young. A vast majority of your life will be alcohol free and even when your 28 it'll already be years behind you! The earlier you quit, the less likely you are to develop alcohol related alzheimers later in life. And don't listen to older people who try to talk you out of quitting altogether!! They're idiots, trust me I know. If they gave a fuck about you, they would respect your path to total sobriety. When I was in my 20's, people in their 40' and 50's would ask why I don't drink and would convince me to "just have a few," most of them became alcoholic later on.

I’ve always been amazed at how available alcohol is in the US, I’ve seen waiters and waitresses being kind of annoyed that someone sits at a dinner table and not order alcohol, alcohol is also the very main trigger for cocaine addicts, most people who do coke won’t have the urge till they have a few drinks, I do think that alcohol is the root cause for other addictions, and if you can afford all the alcohol you want and you are an alcoholic, you are screwed, I sometimes wish I didn’t get into heavy drinking

Myself not a drinker in h.s. and 20s, but will occasionally have a beer, this explains why so many people I've had to go to school with, work with, family, serm so stressed out and miserable, AND LASH OUT VERBALLY, and when I point that out, others talk like the lashing our is normal. But most of these people smile and get excited talking about getting drunk fri, sat, or today after work. I never understood. Now it makes so much sense, they need it. Much of human behavior I've witnessed can be explained by his and dr amens observations on even light to moderate lifetime drinking and the effect of it. Around here, in the 80s and 90s, you had to start freshman year at age 14, or lose your friends. I learned this the hard way, and not a lot of mormons, amish, or quakers or sobet people 14 to 25 to hang out with

yeah, it takes about 2 to 3 months of not drinking at all for your system to clear up and then you almost have too much energy in your two positive. it's kind of weird so in the winter time I quit drinking. helps out with all the gray in this guy

I've done a few bad decisions in life, but drinking was definitely the worst for me. It's mind blowing to me that alcohol is just as bad of a drug as any others(to an extent), yet it is widely accepted all around the world. I've lost a couple of relatives and friends because of alcohol, and I'm lucky that I realized it sooner than later that it wasn't good for me. I wouldn't say I'm a saint now, but I've definitely grown out of my bad decisions, and I'm only trying to be better from there on forward
