@@RyotoMatsu Many Americans face poor education and systems that don't support them. Now, I definitely agree that footage is most likely faked, because I have never in my entire life met someone who can't recognize the US on a map, or identify other continents, or knows at minimum the general area of a country. Now, knowing the entire world map, no. The other thing is that Americans generally don't leave America, so it's not as big a deal. America is enormous, and it is literally possible to take multiple days to travel across a single state. Because of this, most people in America just learn where things in America are, because the chances of them ever even leaving the country for the majority of Americans is non-existent.

@@krisveliviaYou're actually right. That clip is from Jimmy Kimmel and while they do occasionally show real dumb responses to easy questions, most of the time they alter the clips to make the people look worse. For example, the clip may show someone asking "where on this map is the USA?" when in reality they actually asked "point to Brunei", "where is Kyrgyzstan?" I used to go to a music/recording school literally a block away from the show (M.I on Hollywood and Highland) and would see them taping these segments on occasion. Some of us got curious once after class so we walked over and they make it clear before you sign the release that they can and will alter the footage to make you look dumber. A classmate was going to do it but changed his mind because he didn't want to be ridiculed by people for a disingenuous comedy segment. Edit - to be clear, the clip showing the physical map on a stand asking "where is the US" is the one from Jimmy Kimmel

I like the part where you reason that kids don't want to go out anymore not only because they're social media addicts, but because there's nothing really to see or do. Nothing but eight lane highways, cookie cutter subdivisions, strip and shopping malls, fast food restaurants to the horizon, vanishing open space, et al. A real geography of nowhere ... 😮

I agree with you in part. US's relaxed immigration allows for an influx of people from all parts of the world, most especially Catholic Hispanics from the south. This gives the US a lot of soul. What you don't see a lot of in the South American countries is zoning. Cities and towns are built using the old European model, which allows for much more human interaction. There are cities like this in the US, but they are also the most expensive places to live.

I agree. The Enlightenment was a paradox where great insight into the sciences and arts was made, but there was destruction of cultures and economic systems outside of Europe. What Enlightenment critics get wrong is that "reason" is responsible for colonialism and slavery, which is bullshit. It was the lack of reason and questioning one's own biases that led those atrocities. We can agree with the achievements of rational inquiry and condemn colonialism. It's not an either or case.

Work in chat customer service, it's often like you're talking to yourself. Not only do they not read, if they do manage to read it, they actually need it broken down, sometimes very simple information is incomprehensibly for them, and often times instead of accepting that they didn't understand, they get into this entitled mindset and just go feral. further looking like an idiot in the process. Chat is very easy work to do, esp when you can type and think fast But as a person that's often ahead of people, I must say it's truly annoying to give a customer the exact information they need and watch them trip over it and then u have to spoon-feed them in smaller bites like a toddler until they get that you can't board a flight, complete the reservation and then get a refund because the Airport staff was rude to you. Or providing a link on how the charges for changing a flight will cost, assuming they read the link and then when you present the charges for the change they requested, they're confused and need a "breakdown"... Then I have to breaks down the the breakdown. Wild stuff. A word that constantly leaves my mouth involuntarily at work is... "did this person go to school?" And Id rather not start on their amazing grammar and consistency in misspelling simple words, cause you know, you're typing so u may slip up on the keyboard, it's fine, but don't be getting mad and constantly misspelling the exact same words in every sentence..... That's not a keyboard error.. you actually don't know..

I personally think social media makes Americans, as a whole, look far more ignorant than we actually are because that's what gets views. People love thinking that their group is more intelligent and knowledgeable than another group. And will happily believe any negative thing they hear because it makes them feel better about their own insecurities. Especially when it comes to these supposedly "random" street interviews. I'm more than willing to bet these content creators go out of their way to find the dumbest people they can find. People who can't name more than 3 countries are rare. Almost every American is aware of Canada, Mexico, China, Russia, Ukraine, Japan, France, Italy, Israel, Egypt, Australia, Thailand, Greece, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Ireland, Scotland, England, Sweden, Switzerland, Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela, North Korea. Finding an American who hasn't heard of any of these countries is rare. Because they come up in regular conversation ALL. THE. TIME here. I work in the service industry, and i interact with people all the time. Americans as a whole are not as ignorant as social media would have outsiders believe. We're the most wealthy/powerful country in the history of the world and have been for a while for a reason. At the end of the day, there are dumb people everywhere. Our dumb people are just highlighted by the media more than in other parts of the world. Because it sells, and probably to make the rest of the world underestimate us. Reminds me of the time Henry Ford had to prove he wasn't ignorant in court because he wasn't as informed about American history as people thought he should be. Anyone can be made to look like a dummy or a genius when asked the right questions.
@CivilizedWarrior
@CivilizedWarrior 17 күн бұрын
Absolutely agree. Content creators aren’t going to highlight the guys like us who could name 50+ countries off the top of our heads, or answer every history question correctly. Why? Because nobody would want to watch that. Let’s be honest, we all seek out the train wreck mindless idiot content because it makes us feel better about ourselves that “no matter what I’m dealing with right now, at least I’m not that friggin dumb,” regardless of whether we’re fellow Americans, or from Europe or some other continent. Just like with news, you rarely ever hear good nice heartwarming stories, because “if it bleeds, it leads.” They know that fear, shock, and awe is more likely to get views. Same reason more people watch reality tv or read gossip mags than people who read/watch something educational or inspirational. The negative and outrageous will always sell faster than the positive stuff. Period. But it’s a balancing act, as most things are, moderation is key. Consume too much trash tv and gossip crap, without reading and educating yourself here and there, and you become one of these mindless idiots, who can no longer think for themselves, and believe whatever they hear on tv. The brain is a muscle too, and if you never bother to flex it and work it out, it withers and turns flabby.

So how many people did they interview to find those 5-10 imbeciles? 1,000? 10,000? I'm Polish and I moved to Japan 9 years ago. Until now I've met probably like a 1,000 Japanese people who asked me where I'm from (even cashiers and strangers on a street ask me this on almost daily basis). And not a single one of them was ever like "Poland? Is there a country like this?". A few didn't knew that Poland is a country in Europe. But all of them at least heard the name. And all of them understood when I told them "It's a country to the right of Germany". I'm also telling them this in Japanese. So I'm not selecting for smarter bilingual people who speak English. So people like this literally don't exist in other countries. None. Zero. You can keep interviewing random Japanese people every single day for a month and you won't find a single one who can't name 3 countries besides Japan. is not that the program is bad, I mean, USA its got the most expensive schools which it means they can afford the best, so even with the best programs, teachers,etc etc.. is not about that, is about the social and culture important. Nobody cares here..because it doesnt matter. You see it in their attitude and even in TV ..laughing about how they don't even know if the planet is flat or not and carry on with more important things in their life

As an American teen who recently lived and went to school in England for a year, I know firsthand just how little Europeans deem our geographical knowledge. Firstly, to answer your question, the average American public school curriculum does not include a formal geography class. That being said we do typically learn about the different US states in elementary school, usually within social studies/history class. However, like I said, we learn about the states... so the class is limited to American geography. Therefore, yes the average American does not know a lot about geography outside of America, and while I do believe this is an issue, I don't think It's so fair to judge Americans quite as harshly as Europeans often do. The average European does not truly understand just how big and diverse America is. Our country is GIGANTIC and the different states have very different cultures, in some cases even comparable to the cultural differences between European countries. I'm from Nyc and I just started at a college in a state called Wisconsin, I'm sure you've never heard of this state. Most of the kids at this college are from Wisconsin themselves and I find it very difficult to relate to them, their culture is really different from mine. Similarly, like this video mentioned, most Americans don't go outside of the country to vacation, because they can really just fly across the country to discover a different culture/climate/ lifestyle, it take me the say amount of time to fly to LA from NYC as it does to fly to London: 8 hours (It takes someone in London 2 1/2 hours to get to Paris BY TRAIN! Chew on that). Again, I don't really condone this, as I still think Americans should experience perspectives from outside of the country, but you get the point I was trying to make. Overall, what I am trying to say is that, yes, although America is not quite as big as Europe, the country almost functions like a continent in some ways. Therefore, although it is still an issue that we are quite ignorant in learning about the rest of the world, the rest of the world is somewhat ignorant too, because they lack some perspective on the situation and the actual size of our country- AND, personally, I would appreciate if British people would stop asking me if I can name all 7 continents, I'm a New Yorker, I know my shit.- Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk (:

Why the tension between being educational and being entertained? It is as if there is a natural assumption of their diametrical values. Really? The reason why people in the past seemed to be more enlightened is because culture, art, literature etc were dominated by intellectuals, and the consumers were mostly aristocrats. But due to development of capitalism, common people became more wealthy, middle class appeared and they wanted to consume a different type of culture. That's how popular fiction and then comic books, entertainment cinema etc started to get the ground. And in the social media age due to algorithms commoners started to find entertainers among themselves, not just among intellectuals who are continuing to entertain them through Netflix etc. People didn't become dumber, on the contrary, average person today is more educated that the commoners in the past, it's just that commoners in the past wasn't so visible.

I see people in France, Austria and England embracing outlandish theories, whereas 10 to 15 years ago the US had its unique brand of stupidity. We weren't smarter, but there is an amount of propaganda in America that wasn't seen in Europe since WW2 (the "American dream" where success is available to anyone, the feeling that no country is as free as America (when the average European country offers actually more personal freedom), the fascination with the military... Now people blame everything on the "woke culture" (whatever that actually is, or how much it actually exists), but that goes back further than that.

Yo, it may seem like a minor point, but there were 2 World Wars. The one that started in 1914 didn't have Nazis or Swastikas. The alliances of WWI were a little different from WWII. You could argue that both wars and the Great Depression were all part of one big event. However, it's important to note that the trigger for World War I was the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand and a general crisis of European monarchy. World War II, on the other hand, was an expansionist war on all sides, the result of furious jockeying for world dominance.

These clips of people unable to answer simple questions may have required many interviews before a truly clueless person appeared. All the Americans I have ever met are reasonably educated and aware of the world around them.

I have one friend - a schoolteacher in her 50's - who once asked me why we haven't landed people on Jupiter. Another 3 don't believe in the moon landing. I remember other students in school struggling to find Europe. Sure, my sample size is small, but the point is you don't *actually* need to search far and wide for ignorance here, and this is because it's by design.

It varies by location. I've lived all over the US & there are pockets of ignorance all over the place. College campuses, for example, are often one of those pockets. Inner city ghettos as well. Not dumb, per se, but ignorant to different ways of thinking. I think it stems from being in an isolated or insulated environment. That's my best assessment anyway.

I live in SF, recently posted an ad to rent out a room in my place. I have been barraged by stupid replies. My roommates and I placed an ad in the local Sunday paper for another roommate about once a year in the 90’s, not so much stupidity back then. A lot of it has to do with the internet and social media, especially excessive use, which is generally typical of the younger generations.

@@a.somerset7393 Sometimes we have life situations that compel us to converse with lots of new people. Maybe the broader, cutlural landscape has changed for the worse. I have met Amercain tourists in my country and abroad and all were reasonable and rational. That's just my experience.

As a kid, I was so excited to grow up and explore the world. I wanted to climb trees and flip rocks and meet new animals. It feels like it gets harder and harder to do that anymore....either because it's destroyed or it is very costly to get there. Adulthood has largely been a bummer

I just want to change one point: it's not necessarily online games during covid, but the isolation and lack of social learning that was caused. Here in Germany many children had to repeat one year of school. Online learning where children talk to screen, no one to help them because there are not enough teachers and the classroom rules where insane. During winter they had to sit winter jackets in a cold room because it was mandatory that the windows remain open. It was sooo chaotic and the isolation cannot be underestimated. I have seen adults change fundamentally due to the 2 year isolation. I changed and a child s brain is still in development. I think that really had massive consequences for children and it lead to further alienation.

I could not agree with you any more than I already do Jj45353. The damage done due to the ridiculously long isolation, particularly to our children, as you precisely state, will have lasting issues for decades to come. The government caused all of us immeasurable harm. We must Never lose sight of this atrocity and Never allow it to happen again.
