They’re changing refrigerant again to R32 and R454b nice video! The filter dryer you showed was an ac only a heat pump filter dryer goes in both directions

Fortunately I did a refrig apprenticeship and then also done commercial gas/heating. Looking forward to see how/if they become mainstream.

R410a is being phased out, and I don't think any (at least half-decent) heat pumps being installed today will have R410a. Most going in will use R32 (typically in a split system) or R290 (typically in monobloc). The concept is still the same, and if you're not F-Gas registered you won't be installing a split system so don't need to worry too much about the refrigerant side.

I believe the R-32 will be up of propane among other compounds which will make it flammable.

Well thank you for explaining 'heat pump system' however I was qualified (passed refrigeration practice 1&2 ) in 1968 while being an apprentice at the (was) largest refrigeration company in the UK now the site it's a shopping centre in Dartford! So, with a gas combi boiler in my house now, no tanks etc I'll have to refit all that system back for a air/water HP; and more. has anyone thought about the costings of all this gear and it runs on electricity, and where does or how is that generated however, I watch Guy Martin (TT biker fame) on a series of our national grid, the conclusion left me thinking erm! one power station was burning wood pellets! And if all these cars/vans/lorries went EV tomorrow we wouldn't have the capability of generating? So, I think I'll rush out and buy another boiler and keep it in stock. Have a good New Year and don't worry about it as India and China will not be saving the planet. OMG now 75 and won't be around in 2050!

Mostly right Derek but very apparent that what you’re saying is being parroted from somebody who doesn’t quite know the fundamentals themself - not your fault 👍 The bit that everybody coming to the the refrigeration industry (all heat pumps are refrigerators) is the how the “free” heat energy is gained… The act of changing the refrigerant (most manufacturers are switching to R290 or propane at the min) from liquid to vapour takes heat - the latent (hidden) heat of vapourisation. This is heat that is needed to force the change of state - liquid to gas. It’s taken from the air being passed over the evaporator coil (air source…) This “hidden” heat is then given back when the compressed hot gas is changed back to liquid in the condenser 👍 Basically, the total heat output is the sum of the heat of compression plus the latent heat absorbed from the outside air… BTW - DX in refrigeration/heat pump/Aircon refers to Direct Expansion (not dry expansion 👍 Like you rightly say though, refrigerant R718 (water) is not much good for this kind of heat pump because it freezes at 0°C . Oh! And you forgot the “fifth”’kind of heat pump - the direct gas fired absorption one… pioneered by Arkla in the 60’s and now made by Robur in Italy 👍
