12:44 ACTUALLY I CAN HELP In Islamic Spain, the primary sources of slaves for centuries were from SLAVIC or African captives, taken and sold through Europe/Africa before arriving in Al-Andalus. These Slavic slaves were called Saqaliba, an Arabic translation of the Greek "Sklaboi" the etymological origin of the word Slav. Anyway, these Slavic slaves were very often put to use as Mamluks just as the Turks were, and played an important role as an elite vanguard of the Andalusian armies. Several of these Saqaliba rose to become generals in the Emirate, and one named Mujāhid al-ʿĀmirī become the Sultan of Denia and Valencia after the Emirate's collapse in the early 11th century! These Saqaliba were also common in Central Asia and Iran, before being mostly replaced by Turkomans after the conversion of the Rus to Christianity and the Seljuk Conquest of the 11th century. Though contrary to the information presented, they were employed as both infantry, cavalry and mounted Turkic-style horse archers. So there you have it, white slave warriors in the Islamic world and a history-based lore explanation for it in Bannerlord!

Ghulam or the Ghilman were the captured warriors of foreign enemies, the Abbasid Caliphate nobles had the habit of not trusting each other and armies raised locally, so they started hiring the prisoners of war, experienced foreign warriors with no race in the horse, or horse in the race, they weren't racists, anyway, the nobles and the Caliph specially, hired tons of foreign imprisoned warriors because they were "Loyal", few years later + upgrades and promotions and the "Loyal" Ghilman do an uno reverse card and topple the Caliph himself to put whomever they wanted in his place. They got too powerful, and because they were foreign they also didn't have the strongest ties to the land to let them, in simple terms, keep it unburned. So the genius Sultans (some of whom were the aforementioned ghilman) decided they needed "More Loyal" soldiers, so they literally bought foreign children and trained them to be extremely loyal to their masters, aka the Mamluks, few years + uno reverse cards later and the Mamluks are the new Sultans. In short, choose democracy, "he who is too scared to live without guards should fear his guards more than the other stuff he is scared of" said someone.

There were many other slave military governors who made themselves king. Gaznavids come to mind, there was even a black king in India named Malik Ambar. Sadly his sons weren't gigachads like him so his dynasty faded from history
@karimmansour7813 Жыл бұрын
@@mortache It was a trademark of the Islamic history for a slave or a eunuch to rise in power and take over his master's kingdom, maybe because of weak sons or faction, or too strong a character, to have a dynasty spring out of it wasn't rare too, actually the Seljuks were someone's men, the Auybids too, you just needed to get enough power behind you and doesn't matter where you came from, you are now in charge.

A problem the original Aserai have is that they’re a mixture of early and late Islamic armies. The light cavalry of the Rashidins are well known and represented with Farsis. But the Rashidins had heavy infantry that was able to hold off Byzantine attacks for three days at the battle of Yarmuk. Mamluks are based off the Ghulams from two centuries later. I honestly think the Mamluks should be made to be only recruitable from captured Khuzites to give them a more thematic element
@EternalVirgin Жыл бұрын
I think you were referring to the Mubarizun, which were more of "elite" infantry rather than "heavy" infantry

Wrong. The main requirement for being an archer is great upper body strength, which is the main disadvantage of female soldiers. Women on a battlefield could make great light cavalry or maybe pikemen though
@Accentrick Жыл бұрын
@@imeantherearethedarktownsy5210 Yes, but it's not an insurmountable amount of strength. Less effective, maybe, but still better than going melee.

@@Accentrick The strength required to pull a warbow is much higher than the strength required to fight in a melee. Discipline and stamina are MUCH more important in melee combat, and pikes or long spears can be used by even very weak people easily.
@henrykkeszenowicz4664 Жыл бұрын
@@imeantherearethedarktownsy5210 Nomadic composite bows were shot by women, and in pure melee average man will simply overpower an average woman. Persian and Turkic bows are completely different from an English longbow. I agree about the light cavalry though: Female horse archers existed in many nomadic societies(Scythian ones being the most famous), but generally whatever unit women are in, they're most effective if they don't engage in melee. In case of Achaemenid Persia, almost every single soldier was an archer. They had 1-2 front rows of spearmen, and the rest had bows. Women can be strong(like Gina Carano in modern day), but it's a rarity, and you'll have an easier time finding an absolute unit for the front rows among men. Also, in melee, infantry needs to be able to beat someone potentially wearing armor, and it requires great physical strength.

Battanian origin for Mamluk suits to me. Altough most of the Mamluks were Turkic, with the rise of Golden Horde and its subsequent assimilition into Turkic "Kipchak(Kiptschak would be better if you know German)" sphere of influence from Mongol one severely hampered acquisation of Turkic slaves. So instead Eyyubids and later Mameluks of Egypt used Circassian slaves to fill the gaps. I am very well aware of Battanians imagined after real life Celts but "fiercely rebellious mountain folk" stereotype suits Circassians too.

Besides, Falx is Dacian and Rhomphaia is Thracian - so Battanians are a mishmash of different people.

Historically Mamluks were not western slaves - they were usually from Turkic or Iranic stock - they were not slave in the way the west views slaves - they were taken in from early childhood provided excellent education and care along with extensive military training . Short answer - This not a documentary. Longer explanation - I can't say I know much but from what little research I did from Wikipedia 😅 I've found that native Arabs and bedouin, who the aserai are loosely based on, didn't fully adopt parthian shot untill, like you said, the rashidun Caliphate had these Persian cities under their control. But there are no Persians in this game so I've not attributed parthian shot to the aserai. It makes the aserai faction more distinct from khuzait.
