One of my teachers told us a similar story about a coding job he had. Him and a coworker were designing something fun for themselves, independent of work. They showed it to their boss, and he asked them if they could pitch it to one of the higher-ups in the company. They agreed, but their boss would be the one to give the presentation. I had to discuss the importance of commas, in an essay for a university English course. I'm a huge musical theater nerd, so when I needed an example of a comma changing the meaning of a sentence, I used the whole "my dearest, Angelica" debacle from Hamilton.

I remember in third grade when my teacher said that you didn’t have to use what I now know as the Oxford comma, but she said it wasn’t wrong to do it. I decided it sounded better and made more sense with the comma, so I usually write it. Sometimes if I feel rebellious or I’m just too lazy or forget then I don’t write it but I’ve been using that comma for years without knowing the debate behind it!

True Story: When I bought my house I was a little short on the closing costs. The seller who was getting $28k for the house agreed to pay up to $2000 in closing costs to the bank to make sure the deal went through. In the end all the closing costs had been paid, however the document did not say "The seller agrees to pay up to $2000" instead it was typed "The seller agrees to pay $2000". So the day I got my house, I also got a $2000 check from the person I sold it to. Even though I paid 28k, I got 2k back. Which was nice because I had to fix a lot of things in the house. Bank error in your favor, receive $2000.

The Oxford comma is only optional if you don't care about getting any consistent meaning accross to your readers. So basically anyone who cares enough to use any commas must use the Oxford comma where applicable
