Hey, I'm Faulkener 68 year old guy. I'm watching NFL since I was 12. I am writing and converting all those years into these stories to tribute the "LEGENDS" as the name of the channel. Your one "Subscribe" can support and motivate me. It will not cost you anything, but means a lot for me. Edit: I apologize for some of the pictures of " Emmitt Smith" being showed in the video. I'm well aware of that. It was one f our initial video on the channel and editor was not well aware. We are more careful now. Thanks for watching BTW. So don't forget to subscribe if you love watching these legends of Golden Era. ➡➡Also Watch: The MEANEST Linebacker Ever: How Jack Lambert's Toothless Reign of Terror Changed the NFL: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3zNZox4Z5tgh5I

Great story. I'm a life long Cowboy fan. Bullet Bob really changed the game. I honestly doubt most men today could handle being the fastest man on Earth in the greatest country on Earth and become an NFL cheat code where there is no answer for your gift and every team has to scramble to see what works best before they play you lol. The fame, riches and pleasures at your fingertips would be too much for most. I appreciate the care and humanity expressed in your retelling of his life. Definitely looking forward to more from you. Instant subscription!

I've seen several YT commenters in other videos mention how Bob Hayes didn't have good hands, but then I read somewhere that the receivers coach for the Cowboys also was the coach for legendary Lance Alworth and he stated Bobs hands were as good as Lance's, also Staubach said he had good hands, so I'll ignore the YT criticizers from now on.

@@troyjohnson9123 The Cowboys at one time had three really good QB's on their roster: Staubach, Craig Morton and Jerry Rhome, who had led the nation in passing at Tulsa. Morton eventually went to Denver, where he lost to Roger and the Cowboys in the Super Bowl (January '78), and Rhome had become a long time very good Offensive Coordinator in the league.

Thanks for the beautiful memories! Back in the day, in the 1960s, when I (70 years old now) was growing up in West Dallas, the neighborhood kids would play two hand touch football on the unpaved streets. We also played at the Catholic Elementary school during our one-hour lunch break. Every kid went by a Dallas Cowboy Name when playing. I was known as Pete Gent for a while. However, the coveted Name by everyone was Bob Hayes, the which was given to the fastest boy in the team. The fastest boy was George Williams, he was "Bob Hayes", so the defense always double covered him. Those were the days! Bob Hayes didn't run, he GALLOPED!! He was amazing to watch, especially after he caught a "bomb".

Bob also returned punts and kickoffs, alongside defensive back Mel Renfro, who set world records running track while at the University of Oregon. (Another Cowboy defensive back, Mike Gaechter, was on the same relay team there). Hayes and Renfro were known as the Jet Set; teams didn't know which one of them to kick to.

I was born and raised in Grand Prairie, Texas, a suburb of Dallas to the west, where Charley Taylor was born and raised before he, too, went to the NFL, played for the longtime nemesis of the Cowboys, the Washington Redskins, and who also is in the Hall of Fame. While in junior high, 1969, our town's schools had just desegregated (about time), and we gained a running back named Don Marshall, who ran the 100 yard dash in 9.6 seconds, just .5 behind Hayes' 9.1. As quarterback, a handoff I usually made to any other back would be a pitch out to him. I wasn't about to tell him to slow down!Sadly, the high school coaches misused him, and injuries took their toll on his legs. He was meant to go to the Hall of Fame, he was that good.

On the track-and-field oval, Hayes tied the world record in the 100-yard dash with a time of 9.3 seconds. He tied it again in 1962, when a new record had been set at 9.2. Then, in 1963, he set a new record - 9.1 seconds - that stood unbroken for more than a decade. Hayes also led the Rattlers with 11 touchdowns that season, rushing for 260 yards on 55 carries and catching 15 passes for 401 yards.

For professional American Football at the elite level, there is an important difference between QUICKNESS and SPEED. Fortunately, Bob Hayes had the very highest level of BOTH. Note that since his time, there have been plenty of track athletes with World-Class speed who have not seen success on the football field, because their speed only helped them on distances that were longer than 100 yards. Hayes had EXPLOSIVE speed over short distances.

Hayes essentially cost the Cowboys the 1967 NFL Championship in the Ice Bowl. The Packers defensive backs noticed that if Hayes left the huddle and lined up with his hands tucked into his pants he was just a decoy. If he left the huddle and lined up with his hands out in the open, he was the intended target. For most of the second half they ignored him when he lined up with his hands in the pants and basically played 11 on 10 football.

Bob Hayes was also good for telegraphing running plays to the Packers defense in the Ice Bowl. They noticed he would come to the line of scrimmage with his hands tucked in his pant waist when Meredith handed off.

I really enjoyed watching this profile. I remember watching him when I was a small boy & I wanted to be just like him. An observation though -- There are several still shots in the video which show the other legendary #22 standing along side Troy Aikman. A minor error in the story of a major life!!!

Jerry Rice is the leading pass receiver of all time. He was known for his healthy lifestyle and training regimen. I would like to think that receivers would learn something from the lives of Hayes and Rice about how to maximize success in this position.

The passing game wasn't sophisticated back then. Wide receivers averaged huge numbers compared to today, because passing was almost a desperate, all-or-nothing move. That's why sprinters were so good then, and don't matter now.

Great story. Visuals were good also but some of the no. 22s were Emmit Smith and not Bob Hayes. I remember watching Bob when I was younger when he was playing for the Cowboys. Always exciting. I always remember him running down a db from a long distance after an interception of another receiver. He was insanely fast on that play but it is never brought up. Maybe someone can reference it.

Bob Hayes would tell the quarter back "just throw it in the left side of the field i will be there to catch it. From what i heard he said that to the quarterback many times. And he would be there to catch the football.

I was at the Cotton Bowl when Don Meredith threw the FIRST TOUCH DOWN pass to Bob Hayes against The Cardinals. I forgot the name of the defender , however , the defender was stride for stride then the pass came and landed in his hands THEN BOB HAYES took off leaving the defender behind by 15 yards crossing the goal line.. The defender just stopped

Both Tom Landry and Vince Lombardi were assistant coaches on the staff of the NY Giants and both wanted to coach the Giants when Jim Lee Howell retired. Unfortunately for the Giants, Howell was promised one more year by the owner and both Landry and Lombardi were given offers by other teams leading into Howell's last year. The Cowboys and Packers became legendary franchises and the Giants fell into mediocrity.

So I’m about 13 it’s Sunday afternoon the years before cable tv we had an outdoor antenna that set high atop our roof controlled by this directional box on top of the tv.. Daddy would buy sherbet ice cream as i anxiously waited for Dallas Cowboys to play in the Cottonbowl. I had some neighborhood friends whose Mother moved to Dallas . Ole Bernie and Stand would do is talk about Bullet Bob Hayes.. ( We’d be playing sandlot football and they run as fast they could and say Bullet Bob Hayes). So that Sunday afternoon a bowl of sherbet and reception on the tv crystal clear. The announcer would say Pete Gent to the right Hayes to the left. All of sudden Don ‘Dandy’ Meredith would drop back and heave one of them bombs all the way down the field to a wide open Bullet Bob Hayes. When he caught it there wasn’t much more for him to get to the end zone . It inspired me so much till I wanted to be fast. Every kid wanted to be like Hayes. He seemed to glide along on top of the ground floating while everyone who gave chase look ordinary in their pursuit.. You see when you got a word like Bullet in front of your name it adds that flair fast as a bullet.. Wow! And as we grew up in our small town it inspired me to run and be the best I could be. You see Bob ran that 10.0 100 meters in lane number one that prior the race was ran in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics distance runners ran the 1500. Plus he left his shoes so he had scrambling to find some shoes to fit that 8 1/2 foot. Up comes Ralph Boston Olympic long jumper. Now with all that still won the gold in a chewed up lane. No doubt in a modern day Olympics with all the best training we might see a 9.5 100 meters back then . I heard somewhere that he never lost a 40 meter sprint in practice while playing for the Cowboys. A remarkable feat in itself . LB Boomer Sooner January 10, 2025 Friday night 9:55pm ‘Race car for fun in his neighborhood on the street named after him in Jacksonville, Florida.. nuff said.. ❤

I became a Bob Hayes fan after the 1960 Tokyo Olympic. Then he became my idol. When he turned to football I became a Dallas Cowboys fan. The best of days for me. What I mean is I began to love football as an obsession. From the pros I got interested in college football. Bear Bryant and Knute Rockne and all the greats. Bob Hayes began my love for this sport. I owe him so much as the most important sport influence in my life. May he and his family and loved ones be well and loving his contribution. God bless all people who care about this excellent soul.
