Missouri logger here, the bore cut is an amazing cut for trees with tension but also a good choice when in a good patch of walnut. A nice bore cut after digging down past the roots and a gentle push from a skidder gives a much nicer landing and can prevent damage to the logs from limbs crashing too hard and fast.

I would guess that the skip chain at the bar tip on hard and tough Hickory was causing the kickback as the cutters moved to each side of the tip of the bar causing the kickback as the advancing cutter took a big bite. I've got a Stihl MS660 with big bore cylinder and a 28" bar full chisel skip chain and a Huztl 660 with a 28" bar full chisel chain.I'll try and test them on a bore cut to see if the skip chain is a problem when bore cutting on hardwoods. The woods around my house are filled with Shag bark and Smooth bark Hickory trees.I was kind of expecting the Wood-Mizer to get a good workout cutting Hickory slabs :) Enjoyed the video!

Always enjoy watching and learning. I have a 100+ yr old oak that fell on my property in Texas I have to get cut up. Some branches are 73" circumference, 57" c., some 32" wide x 32" deep, and others that are as much as 18" thick and long. The base was 4' across and about 11' to the big crotch, but it looks like too much rot to make good slabs. I'm trying to find someone who would buy it for the lumber and not have to just make a dozen or more cords of wood. Learning a lot from you and hope to tackle this later in the year or early spring if I can't find someone who will look at it and make something with it.

Very sorry about the length but if you are a serious cutter and not some backyard hack, please read this. I present a serious issue, but also offer facts and solutions based on a genuine concern for your safety. I don't care for "likes" or rebuttal. If you disagree with what I am saying than you obviously are ignorant and have nothing to add of any substance and I do wish you a speedy recovery after the chain raked, you open from the top of your head to your collar bone by way of your right eye socket. I am a qualified Fed. wildland fire hazard tree faller as well as a fireline saw trainer. I work (this is my 44th year) as a hot line (cutting along active fire line) sawyer where these types of hazards trees are what we typically have cut through- along with heavy tension spring poles and complex preloading scenarios in dozer pushes etc.- just to get crews to the burning hazard tree that needs to be dropped. I am an expert in this type of hazard tree mitigation-My IQCS and IQS quals and extreme humility when approaching these challenges will bear that out-but this is one issue where there is no room for testosterone-based judgements and displays. That being said- I appreciate this gentleman's effort but this scenario is one that has and will lead to a preventable tragedy. I have engaged in many ground/air extractions of serious and fatally injured (highly skilled Hotshot and engine) crew members and wish that on none of you. Using a boring backcut in this scenario-and as presented- is absolutely unnecessary and has increased your exposure to a potential fiber tear on the heavy lean side causing a twist as the limb breaks. A boring backcut with such a heavy lean -especially if the leaner is heavily top loaded, hardwood, or over a few degrees off limb lean- will pinch your bar if you cut even the slightest amount of your offside holding wood. If you want to get fancy and show off your skills, a boring backcut used with a quarter corner cut and a little nip off your outer strands of your holding wood- would have looked cool and not put a dogless saw, with no PPE, top cutting and walking under a limb that you have already put in your back cut, and not looking up as you are cutting, presented as the best practice example to attempt this very technical and dangerous procedure. This is a dangerous cut and needs to be approached very cautiously. This scenario is safest by cutting one of two ways 1) Scribe a shallow "U" cut around the lower 50% of the limb (this will snap the limb off instead of tearing the lower holding fiber as you make your final cut down to meet the cut you previously scribed. 2) Apply either a Humboldt or Conventional face cut-no more than 1/4 the trees diameter at cut height. Keep your cuts LEVEL and horizontal angling a facecut and backcut seriously alters the direction and ability for you to gauge where the holding wood will snap, and the upper load will begin its whip to the weighted side first as it releases the tension. You should be standing nowhere near the drop zone. These trees (leaners, School Marms (splits at the base and barber chairs), widow makers (falling and striking personnel), hang ups (have to be walked down), tension and compression combinations (potential to send your saw back at you or slingshot you in half), etc. need to be known and their particular hazards must be identified and mitigated prior to your face cut. Goggles (I use Bugz), boots, hard hat, ear protection, Kevlar chaps, long sleeves, long pants, hair, necklaces, hoodie strings, etc. need to be secure, gloves. Then check your work area. And sharpen your chain!
@ebutuoyssa Жыл бұрын
Anyone who doesn't read your post, screenshot it, print it (and keep it in their IRPG, wallet, or taped to their saw- will have a greater chance of becoming another Andy Palmer IWI. I too am a fully (IQCS and IQS) agency qualified faller. Ex Shot, Instructor, ENGB, blahblah...that is thankful you took the time to write what you did. I go through the S-212 every year possible (going through another one now.) Humility and training are the first keys to a successful cut. Great post-I will be sharing it and re-reading it. And one last comment... FUEL YOUR DAMN SAWS UP BEFORE YOU START CUTTING, and use your gunning sights.

@@shanek6582 We were taught that bore cutting (following your face cut) allows you to control better and longer the tree's fall. You have total control of the tree until you clip the trigger (the piece you left in the rear while you bore cut), provided that your face cut and hinge were properly done.

Never watched Ray Smith, a great video the man knows his logging, and the expressions are spot on entertaining. I was very surprised that this man as talented that he is with a saw does not advocate any personal safety equipment. Unless he is wearing ear plugs, nothing. Ray perhaps some discussion on safety would be well received from your watchers. I am on my soap box here because I had wheeled my saw in the same way until I got clipped bad by the saw and now chaps / glasses / steel toed boots / ear muffs / and helmet on most of the time. Anyway no offense intended.
@אוריפלסי5 жыл бұрын
I was born with a hearing problem. It really sucks. Made my life much harder. The fact that people would knowingly risk their hearing by working with a chain saw without hearing protection is fucking ridiculous and an affront to all us hearing disabled
@michaelremski82956 жыл бұрын
I imagine that fore every tree, ask 3 fallers and you'll get 5 opinions on how to take it down. Showing the technique and talking about the why lets everyone else add a trick to their bag. The guy with the biggest bag of tricks usually wins because he can figure out a way to do something safely. Cleaning up the notch, that's the years of experience talking. You've talked about it before, but it was interesting seeing you flip the saw and use the bottom of the bar instead of the top.
@Chevron.Muskoka6 жыл бұрын
One of the most important lessons in my life has been wrapped around that. The different opinion is subjective to where the person was standing when they formed it. Ive had the oportunity to cut many different ways and in different places. Got to learn how and why practices differ place to place and also why people who havent had that oportunity can be so convicted in their opinion. Its not as cut and dried to say what is better or safer, its knowing when and where to apply either. If a technique doesnt fit in your toolbox..... Get a bigger toolbox
