17:00 nice tip on the heavy line, nice release. I always run lighter than my main to make sure I don't lose my entire rig if I get a big halibut or something (weak point downstream of flasher) but for how often that might happen I think your way is better. Convenient 1000/1000 vs risk 1/1000. Plus I often change leaders after a big fish with that lighter line, fearing damage from tension or teeth. Could probably avoid that with a 90#. Actually... losing a fish due to light terminal gear is another risk your way avoids.

Awesome, let us know how it goes for you when you switch over and catch your first couple fish. Tight lines

Great video. Coal Harbour launch (west of Port Hardy) would be a great place to do a video on, as well.

15:30 how much time or effort can that even save? If your reel is well maintained and adjusted all you have to do is lower your downrigger anyways. At best that can get you back fishing a few seconds faster, maybe, if you're normally slow about getting the rod into the holder. There's risk involved too, and not just of entanglement with the flasher you've prevented by holding it apart. Any time there's a loop in the line debris can get caught in it. At least that you would notice as the pull on the line warns you before lowering, hopefully. A bigger problem is that I get hits while lowering or retrieving the line quite often. Hand lining a 50-70# chinook might be ok for a bit while it's running, I've caught a few 20-30 hand lining from a row boat. If it's coming at you, though, you'll never keep up. I've lost one in that upper range while making no mistakes and it still hurts two years later, I might be even more dejected if I had made a lazy choice like that, causing the loss myself. TLDR keep tension on the line, control slack.

Here's my workaround; I don't release the line from the clip, but reel it in as I bring the ball up. I check the line and then get it back the same way you do, but without uncontrolled slack in the line. I don't know if it's more effort my way, or just different effort, reeling a light line rather than tending a slack line. Timing is the same.

Absolutely you're not wrong, there are risks involved especially if you get a bite on the way up. I guess it depends on a few factors if you'd give this a try. Maybe it's not a hot bite and you want to check gear. This can be effective way of doing that without having to reel up from 250 or 300ft. To each their own but we thought this was a cool trick that Steve uses and someone else may or may not benefit from. Appreciate the comment.

My first youtube subscription. Amazing info. I really like your angle-- guides fishing with guides. My backyard is Howe Sound so all the areas you are fishing are close enough to be highly relevant. Keep up the good work!

The REAL best thing about the great channel is that they seek to TEACH us how to fish, as opposed to most channels that are basically "watch us have great fishing action, but we never tell you how to catch fish yourself!"

French creek is much the same, down deep, same set ups, interesting to what about the 90# on the plug that’s for sure, as I always have a plug down on one side and a hootchy on the other. Great vid

Are you referring to the pad locks, locking the downrigger to the swivel base?

Nice. Down here in Washington we live under communist’s rules. Winter chinook fishing is no longer. All closed. They fear it’s detrimental to the orcas. But the costal Indians can fish for them by the thousands.
