Maybe you don't see it, but I assure you that men definitely can tell. You can help mask it with make-up (and we definitely appreciate that when it's done tastefully), but you can't completely hide it. I am not saying women at their 30s cannot be attractive, but it is an undeniable fact that for men the women hit their peak physical attractiveness in their early twenties and then it just goes downhill from there. You may not like it, you may deny it, but that's a simple biological fact of the matter. It's how we are wired. For me, the "perfect hag" in V-Tubdom is Houshou Marine. I have no other real references beyond members of Hololive, so, to me, there isn't a better one in that agency. And, who has more going for her than Marine? She enthusiastically embraces her archetype as *a desperate "old maid" character who still has sex appeal but scares potential partners away with her over-aggressive "yabe" behavior,* and she expertly handles this character. She's also a talented singer and graphic artist, so she has a lot more than her acting skills and sexy character design going for her to attract viewers. Also, aside from her "overseas sexy guys, sexy ladies" persona, she sometimes has frank discussions about things that matter to her and offers advice to her viewers. There are really a small number of Hololive members who are incredibly talented and have grown to be essential talents in Hololive/Cover Corp, and Houshou Marine is definitely one of them.

Just as a bit of context for why 'hag' became such a prevalent term to describe someone who is still relatively young (*copium) - it comes back to anime's obsession with youth. Seriously, look at most anime, and the majority of protagonists are in their teens. 'Mature' characters are often just in their mid-20s (Treize Kushrenada is one absurd example). Anyone over the age of 30 was practically ancient, in comparative terms to other characters. Especially when vtubers were getting their legs, they also pulled towards this teen protagonist standard age range, since that's largely what people expected from an anime character of that design. So it only made sense 'hag', as a joking term about an 'ancient' character, got ported over as well. When some of us realized we had turned 30 ourselves, what we found appealing naturally moved in that direction as well (to quote LOGH, I didn't turn 30 because I wanted to, and someday, you'll turn 30, too!).

I like vtubers of most ages, both EN and JP but i like hags because I am over 40 and so I obviously relate to them. Im still as introverted as I've always been. So no wife or girlfriend here...still heh (no, not ugly). So it's kinda one of the few ways I can feel connected with those of similar interests, times of growing up, etc. So I feel less alone. Hags are more likely to be genuine, they're past the petty, vindictive, drama laden portions of their lives. So they're good bet to be fun, interesting and wise with lower likelihood of issues. Whenever a vtuber drops their high pitched young girl anime voice for their regular speaking voice people celebrate it, fans want what's best for their oshis and being comfortable is one of those things, "dropping the act" could be seen as letting the fans get closer to the real them and i've never seen that go over negatively. I guess for me part of it is that i'm not into anime, i don't need my vtubers to emulate anime characters, i just want interesting and fun streamers who are being themselves and the vtuber persona is just a cute visual aspect. With older women you skip a lot of the self discovery phase, natural voice, world weary, not interested in putting on much of an act "here i am take it or leave it", i'm also older myself so i'm looking for people i can relate to, i need people who played Half Life at launch and complain about the state of the video game industry :P.

I get a kick when Matara calls herself a Hag as I'm 52 yrs old and she is fully 20 years my junior. I know it's essentially a meme refering to 30 and above. I do agree that things are shifting as Vtuber viewers are realizing that most of these VTubers have to be almost 30 or older than 30 years. Especially if they look through their PL's and see that they have been online for at least 10 yrs. I recently found out Gura's earliest PL and this young lass has to be 30 for the math to work out as she has always been a little bit of a memelord. This goes with a few others. Numi for example admitted that she has been on KZbin as a KZbinr for 10 years. This means she has a PL as she does allow herself to be filmed IRL and it's part of her content. This goes for Bao, formerly Hikaru Station (this isn't even a secret she just switched her username to Twitch and became a VTuber) For awhile is was Bao Station. Mousey is the hardest to pin down but she is about 30 when you listen to her stories, the fact that she after high school she went to opera school, and then was bed-ridden creates a timeline that the youngest she could possibly be is 26 - 27, Melody is also about the same ago. I think why a lot of vtubers have super complicated designs is bcos a lot of the most simplest designs have already been taken. Wanna be a shark? Too late theres a big time shark vtuber. Wanna be a dog? Theres thousands of dog vtubers out there not even considering Korone one of the biggest vtubers out there. Which is why a lot of newer vtubers try so hard to stand out in this oversaturated streaming genre

Also the impressivity of the model is unfortunately another way watchers judge who to watch. They say never judge a book by its cover but people do judge vtubers based on their model. More people are interested in watching a vtuber with a custom rig custom design model than someone who can't afford it or is using a free model because to viewers that screams newbie.

The easiest answer for the success of older vtubers is being relatable. It's no surprise that someone with nearly the same age as you is gonna see the world in a similar manner, and behave, joke, talk in a way you find comfortable, so that's clearly gonna be a positive factor. They will reference things you know, and probably have more than a few personal tastes in common. When I was a 34 year old I got into HoloEN when they debuted thanks to Kiara and Calli because they felt so genuine to me, they felt like real people which I could understand, and I could empathize with them. Other aspects that I think are secondary such as the visuals, the sex appeal, or even the mommy kink are superficial features that depend much more on the personal taste of each individual rather than actual age.

so one reason why VTubing can get away with the Hagdom, is the fact that Anime aesthetic makes it nigh impossible to recognize age; so people can feel comfortable acting their age while still looking relatively the same as their younger peers which adds even more to the hotness factor (& yeah you can use the "500 year-old Loli" joke, but have you SEEN Jotaro Koujo? or Goku? or Seiya? or basically any pre-Naruto shonen protagonist)

In my case initial interest sprung from voice, I remember. High pitched voices are perfect in their own way but never my thing, I felt and still feel them cloying at times. Demeanor I suppose made me stay; calm but playful without being distasteful; soothing, peaceful, confident, interesting in their way of thinking. This is for my very specific case though, I doubt this could pass as a general experience 🤔 Also, another reason, *mommy issues.* No point denying it. (That could pass as a common denominator with more success I'd wager.)

As a guy who is 35 myself, i find it really hard to relate to super young vtubers. Yes i can acknowledge they are successful and probably do have some funny monents, but the zoomer/alpha humor is just hard for me to wrap my head around. Hags have similar tastes, humor, life experience that is relatable. Nina had some of the most confortable/cozy streams, which are really nice after a day of work. Also, hags being confident in what they want is a huge plus.

I almost feel called out by this, but I do meet most of your criteria for the sustainable fan, though being into MILF's was always a thing even in my early twenties. I got into VTubing early into the pandemic via Nux Taku introducing his audience to Projekt Melody and IronMouse, and it's snowballed from there. I was pretty much afraid to discuss my interest in VTubing because it seemed that most VTubers were in their early to mid twenties, and I felt like something of a dirty old man for liking them despite having zero interest in them beyond being entertained. The hag trend actually made me feel more comfortable in this space because I realized just how many are around my age, give or take.

I've been into the vTuber thing for only a couple of years now, and I'm a man in my mid 30s. Maybe it's a bit of delayed development from spending my 20s in a slowly spiraling relationship while figuring out my mental and physical health problems, maybe it's because I'm mildly autistic, but frankly, I don't give a shit about the ages of vTubers. They could be 20, 30, or even 40 and I wouldn't care. What matters to me is that they make engaging and entertaining content. Hell, if I could afford it I'd love to get into vTubing myself!
