To add: the furry community being rooted in art/animation is really important to answering why people dress up as, draw, etc. animals & not "normal" human characters. Think about how many cartoons feature anthro animals, & why it's so popular. There's something fascinating about it, whether you find them cute, cool, whimsical or even unsettling. Some people just have a deeper fascination with it & resonate more with it. It's weird to me that someone could ask, "Why not dress up as a human?" without raising the question, "Why dress up as a human?" We get to do that like 100% of the time. Besides, nobody questions why people cosplay non-human creatures normally, even when they aren't characters from media, so why question fur suits? Asking, "Why choose _that_ form of creativity/self-expression?" brings to mind a dull existence void of autonomy. I wouldn't get a fur suit, but I fully understand why someone would. The people it gives the confidence to be who they see themselves as / wish they were? Normal for cosplayers. Wanting to look different but just act like yourself? Also normal for cosplayers. Acting like your OCs? Not normal for cosplayers, but that only shows fur suiters are more creative. Honestly, they deserve some praise. (Also not a furry, imo. Some say liking anthro animals = furry, but I'm not in the community & don't seek anything out so that seems misleading. I just like the art & respect the community.)

That’s always what I have said, furries genuinely aren’t all that abnormal at all. Cosplay is fun, furries are quite literally just cosplayers with a focus on animals. You know what else isn’t weird, sex between consenting adults. The sexual aspect of furries is a small and very real part of the fandom, so of course plenty of people that go to the convention fuck in their rooms, or have orgy parties, is it as common as people think, absolutely not. But what consenting adults do behind closed doors is nobody else’s business. For some people the suits are a fetish, whether that stems from things like pet play and primal stuff, the body suit aspect, or the mask aspect, but for plenty of others, they are just fucking, in or out of suit. I have always described furries as essentially just being a lot of queer fraternity folks in fluffy suits. There is plenty of dancing, drinking, drugs, and overall partying because it’s a convention after hours, of course there is. Some furries do act exceedingly cringe and awkward in public, and some are genuinely bad people, but both of those are true of any group. My conclusion is just enjoy what you enjoy and be yourself. I have been a furry or at least an enjoyer of their art styles for many years, I don’t talk about often to people who are outside of the community but I like the people and the culture. I have never felt the need to defend things per se, just explain my view on it all.

Answering the question of why a dog is kinda hard tbh. I build fursuits for a living for the community and also dress up in a suit at cons on occasion, but I can't really explain why that and not cosplay a known character. In a lot of the ways, its very similar. You get into character, at least some of them do, and you get to just fool around and be stupid for a while. Its an animal, so it's universally liked and its typically cartoonish so it hits home with lots of people due to the toony aspects. I guess if you could be anything for a few hours, being a dumb animal with no responsibilities versus another human is just more fun. I'm not attracted to fursuits, though there definitely are a vast majority that are. I acknowledge the skill that goes into each one because it's my full time job, but I'm not foaming at the mouth to bang some dude because of his fursuit (though there are many who are like that.) As for the furry parties thing, yeah theyre usually called room parties at conventions and not really orgies. Theres typically invites sent out amongst NSFW chats with specific rules such as STD test results being required and such. I haven't gone to any of the 18+ room parties personally as it doesn't interest me or my husband, only a few get togethers with my friends where we drink, eat pizza and watch some dumbass movie and chat. There are plenty of those kind of parties as well, but the NSFW parties definitely outnumber the SFW ones. I won't sit and sugarcoat the fandom. Theres a TON of freaks ranging from literal rapists to zoophiles to pedophiles and more. But there are a vast amount who are fairly normal about the hobby and take it as just that. A hobby. They like to get art of their character doing normal shit like sitting in a pool floatie in a pool, them and their husbands characters going to an aquarium, etc. The expressing themselves claim is true in a way, I think just poorly worded from who you were speaking to. A good majority of the community have body image issues, myself included though I don't look like the stereotypical furry, and hiding behind a mask helps me feel more confident in interacting with others without being judged based off my appearance. I'm assuming it's similar for a lot of others in the community. I still interact with people face to face of course, its part of my job when I'm selling at an event. But I find comfort in putting a mask on and becoming a whole other character for a few hours and then taking it off and going back to being who I am, a regular human. The attention one gets with a fursuit on is also validating in a sense because it makes you feel... for lack of a better term atm (its early, forgive me) popular and admired. The market average for fursuits at the moment (2024) are as follows.. I obviously have to keep this knowledge up to date since I'm a fursuit maker myself and it's direct competition.. Head Only: $2000-2500 Mini Partial (Head, Hands, Tail): $2500-3000 Full Partial (Head, Hands, Feet, Arms, Tail): $3000-3500 Full Plantigrade (Full Suit, No Leg Padding): $3500-4000 Full Digitigrade (Full Suit w/ Leg Padding): $4000-4500 Compared to these market averages, I price myself VERY low and some other makers do too, but the vast majority keep the average and continue to push further up in price. $700 for the suit is VERY cheap nowadays, but the quality also reflects the price. If you compare a suit made by me and anthpo's suit, the quality and style difference will be noticable. It's a very.. "You get what you paid" sort of market. The shitty remarks from furries about their suits to people inquiring about it always piss me off because it just makes all of us look like jackasses. People were pissed off because he went to the party and did record people there without their consent afaik and furries get REALLY defensive toward people who infiltrate the community as normies. It's a weird fight between the furs of "we need to be in the public eye!" and "we don't want any normies to join!" Its really weird :/ As for the wealthy comment, quite the opposite. There's dozens of fursuit makers and artist who have stolen THOUSANDS of dollars from furries and they refuse to get lawyers. @rat_in_a_bucket well it’s also dependent on what area you’re in. In my hometown, you’re basically asking to get bullied if you tell anyone you’re a furry. It’s pretty far out in the country, and the only way you don’t get bullied is to be “trendy” and do what everyone else is doing. Shocking, but that’s how it is in over here! But during the school year I live in a more urban area, and it’s generally acceptable to be a furry. The only person who gets bullied for being a furry is this girl I used to be friends with but that’s because she growls at people and bites them. So yeah it’s also very dependent on where you live.

I think toms inability to understand that he doesn't have to get everything other people do to just not care about them.
